I've been looking for years for an old tape I had of my favorite local band from the early 80's 2nd place performance at Boston's Rock and Roll Rumble. I found it a couple of nights ago and was thrilled. Then I tried to play it and was bummed. The tape moves VERY unevenly - dragging and speeding up severely. I tried rewinding and fast-forwarding a few times to see if that would help but it didn't appear to. Any ideas? Is it even possible to have a tape removed from its original cartridge and put into a new one? Thanks, Laura =====end quote===== Yes, it can be done. Contact your nearest HiFi Audio specialist (not giant chain, but local audiophile outlet) for an empty cassette case that screws into place. You will need to _CAREFULLY_ break open the cassette case and remove your tape, lay the little pancake reels into place and close it up. Maybe you can find someone to help at the store. It also may be playable as is, just not on your machine. We drove up to see The Line, the Cross, and the Curve at the Nu-Art theater, unfortunately we didn't meet up with any of the L.A. ecto-ers (or Las Vegas ecto-ers for that matter--Hi Suzanne), but we still enjoyed it. The movie was a lot of fun, but Kate has a long way to go before she'll ever be considered a serious film maker--as a music video director, she's definitely ipmroving. The Kate "film" was playing with Laurie ANderson's Home of the Brave--which I was able to see for the first time. Unfortunately I think Kate should have been shown with something else--it made The Line, the Cross, and the Curve look rather uninspired. Laurie is so creative, and although its basically just a concert film, it was quite a concert. There were a couple of places that dragged on a little too long (a problem I have with much of Laurie Anderson's music--she takes a good idea and drives it into the ground--O, Superman for exapmle), but then she, herself, calls it "difficult listening". For me, it isn't so much difficult, as tedious as times, but still well worth seeing (probably more so than TLTCTC). The only album that doesn't succumb to this "overdoneness" is Strange Angels --which is pure magic. Definitely the most accessible of Laurie's works-- and a good introduction, but not exactly representative of the rest of her work. Anxious to hear the new album. Neal "won" a copy of the vinyl Rubberband Girl picture disc. He actually didn't "win" it (they had a raffle drawing), but one of the winners who seemed not to know what to do with vinyl, gave it to him. She actually had trouble finding someone who would take it! I guess vinyl really is reaching its death. Also spent a great day CD shopping. I was able to pick up Ingrid Karklin's Anima Mundi used!, as well as Holly Cole's Blame it On My Youth, and Kindness of Strangers. Neal did much better, ending up with 10 cds by the time the day was done--but unfortunately still no Rhodes II. (The one CD that the Mission Viejo Tower did not have--and the only one Neal is missing). Thanks to whoever recommended the MV Tower by the way! And Neal got to tell me about some very positive #ecto experiences he's been having. It's quite amazing what can be accomplished through computers these days isn't it? I still have yet to hook up to #ecto--the last thing I need is another distraction at work! But I would like to welcome all those new to the list who have heard about it through #ecto! Well, enough rambling. This next month is going to be quite incredible-- Alison Moyet, Toni Childs and Milla all coming to town. Again--yet another plug for the new Toni Child's album--go buy it! Not since Jane Siberry's When I Was a Boy have I been so moved by an album. Well, enough rambling. Hope everyone had a terrific Independence Day, and for those not in the U.S., well, I guess I still hope you had a terrific 4th of July! Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 5 Jul 1994 10:33:08 -0700 From: "Alex Gibbs" Subject: Milla in _Bikini_, her origins This is cross-posted to ecto and Milla's list: On a tip from someone in ecto, I found the magazine called _Bikini_, which has an article/interview/pictoral of Milla. It's the June/July issue and seems to be primarily a surfer culture magazine. She's on the cover, but as a secondary photo. The article spans 4 pages, but is about 2 pages in length, with 5 B&W photos, some rather revealing. It talks a lot about how she feels about her past and comparisons to Brooke Shields, as well as her entry into the music industry, and some pretty random things. The main reason for my post is some info in the article, like her origins: "Born in Kiev to a Russian actress and a Yugoslavian pediatrician, Milla is a slave to her Slavic roots." "...totally L.A. accent. Though not a citizen yet (she'll be getting her passport in mere months), she's been a California girl since she was five." "It's because of their generosity [EMI] that she's able to make London her home now, since they're footing the bill." It mentions that 2 year old photos of her are now on the cover of Harpers & Queen, "a major Brit fashion mag." Of course that might be a couple months old now. She's not too happy about it. I think all the movies mentioned in the article have been mentioned here or there already: _Return to the Blue Lagoon_, _Kuffs_, _Chaplin_, and _Dazed and Confused_ ("if-you-sneeze-you'll-miss-her" bit). "'I thought if I'm gonna do music, it's gonna be the first thing I ever do where _nobody_ gets involved except me,' Milla emphasizes." After her first bout with a record company "... Milla gets 'enough of a grip on the guitar' to write her own songs." [...] "'On my next album, I don't think I'm gonna have a producer. I'm gonna be with my band and arrange it all, have it rehearsed and ready to go when we get into the studio.' The resultant album [The Divine Comedy] is quite wonderful. Imagine a non-quirky Kate Bush mixed with a deep throated Enya, encased in an Eastern European atmospheric swirl." There's the usual Kate comparison made for female musicians. A non-quirky Kate is nothing like Kate at all! "Her boyfriend is the bass player for the English group, Jamiroquai." Those are some of the most informative parts. If I have time I might transcribe the whole article for the Milla list, but it's rather doubtful. /-\ |_ |= >< Alex R. You know, just at this moment I happen to be listening to, let's see, the fourth disc of the _United States Live_ set, and I think early Laurie Anderson really comes off much better this way than it does on her first, or even second albums. Trying to turn her early work into a single album's worth of individual songs strips out some important elements that make it, I think, *harder* to appreciate, not easier. With _United States_, where 1) she has the space to develop things, and 2) you go into the experience understanding that you're committing to five hours inside her mind, things which seemed excessive or undirected in the context of _Big Science_ fit in perfectly. It's hard to recommend a $50 box set to somebody who doesn't even like smaller doses of this Laurie Anderson period, but if your fiscal pain threshold is high enough to allow you to buy a copy, I think it's a pretty remarkable work that exerpts don't do justice to. Sometimes it's better to *start* with the box set. (Actually, I feel that about Yes, too.) >The only album that doesn't succumb to this "overdoneness" is Strange Angels >--which is pure magic. Not since Jane Siberry's >>When I Was a Boy have I been so moved by an album. >This is a pretty powerful review. I always get Toni Child and Jane Child >confused, though, so can you *describe* Toni and her new album? Toni Childs and Jane Child? Hmm, never made the comparison. Jane Child tends to be trendy dance-music--she's the one with the earring connected to her nose ring and the Bo Derek 10-style hairdo. Toni Childs, on the other hand, has an incredible booming voice--she sings l like no one else I know. She also tends to not appear very much in terms of album art or videos, so its more difficult to describe her appearance. Her first album, Union, had the incredible song Don't Walk Away, as well as Walk and Talk Like Angels (?--not sure of the correct title). Her songs tend to use a lot of African rhythms and back-up singers. Her second album House of Hope, was rather overlooked, but still excellent. It lacks some of the more ethnic influences, and almost all the songs discuss love and abuse--family, spousal, what have you. Her latest album, The Woman's Boat is "dedicated to the female spirit in every living thing. I believe we are posed for an opening, a new birth, a new way of thinking. I dream there is a new daughter born into the world, a new daughter born into the psyche of each man and woman. She has the courage to acknowledge what is felt and become visible, unveiling and discharging the inner predatory voices, the old fears of being crushed, and breathing finally in the safety and balance that is all our birthright." The album really fits together, and is much more complex than either of her previous two. Recorded partially in India, using some of the Zap Mama singers as background singers (as well as Peter Gabriel on one track), she incorporates all kinds of different ethnic influences that result in a style uniquely her own (unlike Union which tended to sound quite similar to some of Paul Simon's African-influenced work). The emotions range from subtle, quiet moments of tenderness and hope, to loud, abrasive moments of rage and fear. She also incorporates noises like alarm clock's ticking, sirens wailing, babies crying, heartbeats, children singing nursery rhymes, etc. The opening and ending tracks Womb and Death, tie the album togehter, making it work thematically as a whole. I think my favorite track is Welcome to the World--about the birth of this "new daughter". Lyrics are: "Let me welcome you to this world. And let me tell you of my world How it is. And how it is. You want to know now. I don't want to say that it's a bad world. And tell you that its so, so bad. I don't want to disappoint you my child. But this world is gonna take you, gonna take you by storm child. You will be hurt and there will be pain, yeah. But there will be love just the same, yeah. ..... We want to welcome you to this world. And yes, there'll be days and nights. When you'll know the world is right. We all bounce on this big world ball. Come child, come with me. Come and bounce on the world and see. We are joy. We are light. We are darkness and we are night. We are hands and heads and ears and nose. We are feet, fingers, limbs, and toes. ... We pull triggers. We play with guns. We play with shoelaces and we twist our tongues. We are kisses. We are hugs. We are the match that will light you off." For me these lyrics are indicative of the album as a whole. It takes about the good and the bad in the world, offering hope, but recognizing the problems, and the acceptance that all the emotions together make the world the beautiful place it is. So check it out. It's a pretty powerful album. Jeff Hanson ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
