Date: Sat, 02 Jul 94 15:39:57 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Why didn't I notice before? I'm sitting in my dad's computer room, listening to his disc of Custer LaRue's _The Daemon Lover_, which I've mentioned here many times. The thing is, I don't have a tape of the whole album...just a 5 or 6 that I fit on at the end of my dub of _Massive Blur_. So there are songs I've heard a number of times, but not in the settings in which I really get to know lyrics. Suddenly, I realized that some of the words seemed awfully familiar--a couple of sisters sitting by a river, arguing over a man. I yanked out the liner notes, and sure enough, this song, "Binnorie (The Twa Sisters)" is the source of Loreena's "The Bonny Swan." Read on! Binnorie (The Twa Sisters) Child Ballad No. 10, Version 7 Bruce and Stokoe, _Northumbrian Minstrelsy_, 1882. Slightly emended by Custer LaRue There were two sisters sat in a bow'r Binnorie, O Binnorie; There cam a knight to be their wooer By the bonny mildams of Binnorie. He courted the eldest wi' glove and ring, Binnorie, &c. But he lo'ed the youngest aboon a' thing. By the bonny, &c. The eldest she was vexed sair And sore envied her sister fair. The eldest said to the youngest ane: "Will you go and see our father's ships come in." She's ta'en her by the lily hand And led her down the river strand. The youngest strude upon a stane, The eldest cam' and pushed her in. "O sister, sister, reach your hand, And ye shall be heir of half my land." "O sister, I'll not reach my hand And I'll be heir of all your land." "O sister, reach me but your glove And sweet William shall be your love." "Sink on, nor hope for hand nor glove, And sweet William had better be my love." Sometimes she sunk, sometimes she swam, Until she cam to the miller's dam. The miller's daughter was baking bread And gaed for water as she had need. "O father, father, draw your dam! There's either a mermaid or a milk-white swan." The miller hasted and drew his dam And there he found a drown'd woman. Ye couldna see her yellow hair For gowd and pearls that were sae rare. Ye couldna see her middle sma' Her gowden girdle was sae braw. Ye couldna see her lily feet, Her gowden fringes were so deep. A famous harper passing by, That sweet pale face did chance on to spy; And when he looked that lady on, He sighed and made a heavy moan. He made a harp o' her breast bone, Whose sounds would met a heart of stone; The strings he framed of her yellow hair Their sounds made sad the listening ear. He's ta'en it to her father's ha', There were the court assembled a'. He laid the harp upon a stane, And straight it began to play alane-- "And yonder sits my father, the king And yonder sits my mother the queen; "And yonder stands my brother Hugh, And beside him my William, sweet and true." But the last tune that the harp played then Was -- "Woe to my sister, false Helen." --------- Now, of course, this is a traditional song, and the source for Loreena's version may have had some differences. Over all, I like Loreena's music better, and the fact that it's a bit shorter (Custer LaRue's version is a bit monotonous). I like the lyrics of this one better, though. Either way, it's a great piece... Jeff (someone want to forward this to Old-Ways for me? dunno the address) |Jeffrey C. The hearing differences I was talking about are specifically speaking voices. I believe it is psychological more than physiological. We are trained to listen more closely to male/deeper voices because this is an authority figure. ;) -seanympf ======================================================================== From: snpf@lucid.com (Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson) Subject: Re: Save Our Souls Date: Sat, 2 Jul 1994 14:18:01 -0700 (PDT) Onealien wrote: > together before we can help you. For example, it seems that people 1,000 years ago or more were as intelligent as we are now. The individual doesn't seem to be growing more intelligent. Also, we can't seem to get over our violent hump, etc. I'm not pessimistic! -seanympf ======================================================================== From: Stuart Myerburg Date: Sat, 2 Jul 94 17:34:39 -0400 Subject: Milla Mailing List I saw this in alt.music.alternative and thought some of you would be interested... Stuart ----------- *** Reaching-From-Nowhere -- The Milla Mailing List *** I have decided to start a mailing list for a new artist who I think has a very bright future. That artist is Milla, whose debut album _The Divine Comedy_ has been well recieved by music critics and by fans of good music. This announcement is an open invitation for anyone who enjoys Milla's music to come and join in discussions of her work, her future, other artists, and any other topics of interest. If it were not for the favorable opinions of Milla expressed on Really-Deep-Thoughts (the Tori Amos mailing list) I would probably never have discovered her, so I don't want to restrict the discussions on rfn to just Milla. :) For more information on Reaching-From-Nowhere you can send email to "majordomo@world.std.com" with a body of: info reaching-from-nowhere Since the list is just starting out things may be a little slow at first, and there may be some repetition of topics as new subscribers join. I'm afraid I have to disagree somewhat with Sarah when she says that male voices are used because psychologically we are trained to listen to the male voice ie the voice of authority. From a strictly medical end it is easier to hear a deep modulated male voice. I know several people who have various levels of deafness, including my father, and all of them have an easier time understanding a male voice than a female voice. When someone starts losing their hearing, the ability to hear higher sounds is usually the first to go. When someone is trying to get their message across, it would make sense than to have the voice delivering that message be one that is going to be heard and understood by the greatest amount of people. Yes, society has over the years equated the male voice with authority, but let's consider that it may be something as simple as advertisers using a lower voice to reach the largest audience. *=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=* | Wayne A. It is easier for *Me* to hear higher voices. The study I spoke about before was saying that womyn hear womyn's voices better, and men hear men's voices better. So, it wouldn't be the widest audience, it would be men. Also, like it or not, in our culture, it is most common for the deeper male voice to be an authority "" figure. -seanympf ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 2 Jul 1994 20:05:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Robert Lovejoy Subject: Resend of SOS with postscript I'm resending this to the list as the bounces were astronomical! I wanted to point out to anyone who is interested in Suzanne Vega that she pops up on America Online from time to time, answering questions, asking questions and just chatting with us in general. Recently she mentioned the possibility of putting together a compilation of her singles and non-album material (like "Left of Center" and "Luka" in Spanish), and we have also put the idea in her head to do a video compilation to go along with it (several people had been asking about the availability of videos). She has been very friendly and talkative, but she doesn't want to talk about what inspired most of her songs, because she says the people who inspired the songs would probably hate her if they found out they were the inspiration... You can find her folder in the ROCKLINK area, under World Music.
