For me, it's a case of finding out a bit of information about a song, something that makes me *hear* it differently. In this case, it was hearing Happy's story about what the song is about. For NewBob and others interested, it's a song about a young girl who has painted a monster who she feels is her protector. The song is a fantasy about the girl being able to call the monster to life so the monster will go after the people who are making the girl's life miserable. "roam the streets, invade their dreams" Now, we found out that Happy drew a monster named "Alice" (the he-monster in the song) and that she was tormented as a child. She wrote the song because she wished that she could bring Alice to life. Where can you make your imagination come to life? Movies, books, art (paintings) and music. She *wanted* to be that girl...in her imagination and her song, she *is* that girl (though obviously, it's not autobiographical) :-). Wow, when I heard that, I listened to the song with an entirely different mindset, and now I love the song. Btw, for those who have ftp, you can see "Alice" in the gifs archive at hardees.rutgers.edu via anonymous ftp in pub/hr/gifs. > From: Marcel Rijs <100276.2176@compuserve.com> > Subject: Happy Birthay project > > A question from a newbie ectophile: I want to contribute some music for the > Birthday project. If not, let me know. Since the deadline is so close, perhaps one more posting of the FAQ is in order. Doug? I think the point is to not worry about what Happy would appreciate. Well I don't know if I'm going to be the only crotchety grumpity old naysayer, but I'm afraid I don't like this idea very much. I've talked about this before, actually. I really think that one of the reasons that Ecto has retained its close, friendly and relatively flame-free sense of community is because we're a mailing list. We're not a newsgroup open to anyone who passes by and who doesn't care what we're about. Is this elitist in a sense? Sure. Anyone's welcome to join Ecto, but they have to know about it first. This has kept it small and friendly. And personally I like that. If I want flame wars I can go anywhere else *but* Ecto. To me Ecto is like a friendly party somewhere. The door's always open - anyone can drop by. But opening it up to the whole world to me seems like turning all the walls into glass ones. All of a sudden we don't know who's looking in. (I know Ecto is gatewayed already to a couple of local groups; frankly I don't like that either. And the ftp archives aren't as readily accessible as a newsgroup.) Sure alt.music.ecto doesn't have much traffic, but I don't like the idea of turning Ecto into yet another newsgroup (posting digests is one step in that direction) and losing something very rare on the net. I think it'd be cool if people crossposted individual messages to the newsgroup or if a regular automated posting informing a.m.ecto readers that the mailing list exists were to be invented. > To refer back to my "Gentle Suggestions" post, anything we can do to > help Happy is Good, so trying to make alt.music.ecto busier and more > interesting to readers and sysadmins is also Good. True, but for me Ecto is not solely a way to evangelize Happy. It's become a small community of friends unto itself. Am I being insular? Perhaps. But over the few months I've been on Ecto I've really come to appreciate it. (hugs to Holly for introducing me to Ecto! :) The idea of any net surfer being able to poke his/her head in easily doesn't appeal to me. > Another option: if anyone writes an article to Ecto that they *don't* > want posted to the newsgroup, they could tell me and it would be a > simple matter to edit it out of the digest before I post it to ame. If you do go ahead with this plan I think an X-header reading DNP or something for Do Not Post might be an idea. If such a thing is technically feasible. It's just starting, and their "benchmark" list of bands is currently rather mainstream, but after joining the database, it seems you can add lesser-known artists to it. (I myself haven't taken the time to really check this thing out thoroughly, but it sounds like a good idea.) It's called "ringo", here's the starting info: | Q: How does it work? | | A: Well, how do you do select albums ordinarily? You listen to songs that | some D.J. plays, or you hear about stuff from your friends who have | tastes similar to your own. | | That's how it's done here. People all over the internet, from all over the | globe, tell me about their listening tastes. Ringo then finds people who | are similar in their tastes to you. If they really like some artists | that you haven't heard yet, Ringo will recommend those artists to you. | | Which is why the more users in the system, the better the recommendations. | So spread the word! | | Q: How does Ringo know who I am? | | A: People are identified according to their usernames. So be | consistent as to where you send email from. | | Q: My friend wants to get on the ringo bandwagon. What should I say? | | A: Tell your friend to send an email to ringo@media.mit.edu with only the | word 'join' in the body of the email, and s/he will be sent the latest | greatest survey, and all the relevant info. [Also, 'help' in the body will give you just the instructions.] On other topics... sandoval says: | In fact, I'd say that most astronomers | nowadays pretty much assume it's a given that there are certainly planets | out there, and some of them must have life on them. | [begin monologue, where I use "intelligent" with a fairly stretchy meaning] At least in popularized accounts, I was under the impression that a significant number of respected astronomers are confident that there must be "nearby" many planets with the same capabilities of evolving intelligence as ours. (Anybody know any "widely accepted" estimates?) If so, we're hardly likely to be the first. Looking how technology has grown in the last 100yrs, what if another society has 1000, or 10,000, additional years? So a (serious) outstanding question is, why haven't we found any "intelligent" radio signals from out there? One answer is that the estimates are off, intelligent life is much more difficult to arise than we guess. Another possibility is that...intelligent life tends to be unstable, destroying itself almost certainly. Look at our nuclearWar/ecological problems in the last 100yrs, now try to keep everything in check for another 1000 or 10,000... The more I think about it, the less encouraging I think the future is. [end carl sagan emulation] In a more optimistic thread, meth thays: | >seanympf floundered: | >I'm a little confused though. I don't know any ugly people. | >Perception? | >mine? | | Probably your perception. If you know someone is beautiful on the inside, | you don't give a shit what they look like. If this were only the norm of | how people were perceived... | Also, your perceptions of the surface change with the knowledge of the depths. I have friends who in my (totally objective :-) opinion, are gorgeous. (Not only in a "because-i-know-them-well" way, but in a "they could easily meet hollywood's criteria for good-looking" manner.) But then I realize that I don't recall particularly noting "beauty" as an outstanding characteristic when I first met them. I think beauty -- even outer/appearance beauty -- takes time to be appreciated. [A more cynical explanation is that I tend not to become friends with those who I don't find at least a little attractive right off...] Conversely, there are some I initially thought very good-looking, and after getting to know them a little, I couldn't see why I'd ever think that, even were I given only a photograph. Yikes, I sound much more pontifical in this post than I hope I really am. It would be transparent to USENET which would probably suck. Plus idiots would probably start sending flames to ecto just to annoy us. Plus, do you really want things like the birthday list and the ectofile and the ecto classifieds posted for the world to see? Just _two_ weeks until the deadline for submitting entries to the 1994 Happy Birthday Project. So far, only the following people have submitted their entries: Doug Burks (and I haven't even sent my script to Mitch yet. :( ) Act now, or risk being left out of the chance for lasting fame, fortune, and recognition by the Hapster herself. What is this all about? Following is a (slightly editted) copy of the original call for participation, which should answer all of your questions. The Idea For the uninitiated, Happy Rhodes will celebrate her 29th birthday on August 9th. In what has become an Ecto tradition, we send her a collective gift, a tape or three of music submitted by individual Ectophiles. Your selections should be guided purely by music that you think Happy (or even other Ectophiles) would like to hear. It does _not_ have to be Ecto-fodder, female vocalists, etc. Give it some thought, but don't overly worry about achieving perfection. You certainly can do better than "I'm Henry the VIIIth, I Am", which I placed on the 1993 edition of the Happy Birthday Project tape. :) Let's get wide variety and wide participation! Original music is especially welcome! [I didn't see it, but I've been told by an unimpeachable source that in her last newsletter, Happy implored all contributors of such original music to copyright it beforehand. I pass this along.] The Mechanics Please limit your musical selections to ten minutes. I'm going to be stricter about that limit this year, since practically everyone violated it last time (which shouldn't have been surprising in this musically passionate group :) ). Yet feel free to add "filler" music, music to fill in empty spots on the tapes, though I cannot guarantee that the filler will be used. One time I used every scrap of it (and then some) and the next I used none. Just make sure you _clearly_ identify which selections are your primary contribution(s) and which are your filler material. In the very unlikely case of duplications, selections will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis -- another reason to act fast. However, for some historical perspective, duplications have never occurred (to my knowledge) on such a project, though songs have been selected from the same album twice. If you can, feel free to add a spoken personal greeting and/or introduction for your selections to your tape. If you can't but would like to add one, Mitch Pravatiner has volunteered to record any script you e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] in his mellifluous tones for eventual inclusion alongside your selection on the tape. Note that this introduction counts towards your 10min limit. Mail your cassette tape (C-100 suggested), holding your main selections, any filler material, and any introductions to me: Doug Burks 2223 NW 59th St #2 Seattle WA 98107 USA Mitch Pravatiner has also volunteered to serve as the Grand Master of Ceremonies, playing the role of disc jockey tying together any loose ends, voicing any necessary introductions for others' selections, etc. I will compile the result, slipping in filler and other topical selections as required. The final result (possibly along with a gift) will be wrapped and mailed to Happy in time for her birthday (I hope). The deadline To give me more time to put together the best possible tape, the deadline will be earlier this year -- 15 July. However, don't wait until the last moment! Contribute early and often. :) The rewards Besides the good feelings of contributing to such a noble group effort and the joys of showing off your musical fine tastes to Happy and other Ectophiles, all contributors will receive a copy of the final project tape using their submitted tape plus one tape free from my tape dubbing project tape cache. I will also cover the postage and packaging. However, if the project extends onto a third (or fourth! :) ) tape, the extra tapes are available only under the usual tape dubbing project conditions. Non-contributing Ectophiles can procure copies of the final 1994 Happy Birthday Project tape through the tape dubbing project on the usual terms. The volunteers I am personally gift-wrapping-challenged. Would someone like to volunteer to take the final tapes and potential gift, nicely wrap them, add a card, and ship it off to Bearsville NY? The questions Adding a gift to the tapes adds a wonderful touch to the present, in my opinion. I open the floor for suggestions for such a gift. I have some questions I'd like to raise to this collected audience. What do you think about the future of the project? Do you like the current format? Is two projects a year too much? Any and all opinions and suggestions are solicited! The end If you have any questions or problems, just let me know! Eagerly awaiting to be inundated by a flood of submissions, I remain ...
