I've gotten a little behind on my digests so I don't know how much this has been discussed lately, but thought I should let you know ... A friend of mine in Detroit found a copy of HR^5 at Car City, a used record store, for $4, and knowing of my interest in Happy, sent it to me. I wound up getting two copies of HR^5 on the same day, since the one I'd ordered from AG showed up too! Naturally, I'll cherish my autographed version, but I'm not sure what to do with my spare. Save it for a new ectophile somewhere down the line? Send it to WHFS and beg them to play it? Anyway, it made me kind of sad that some radio person sold it without even listening to it (it's shrinkwrapped) -Sue Trowbridge * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Threw my youth away now I want yours consid@access.digex.net -The Loud Family ======================================================================== Date: 25 Jul 1993 02:32:05 -0400 (EDT) From: "she listens like her head's on fire.." Subject: I'm a Happy camper My HR^5 arrived! A few late night thoughts about it... It sounds great. I like the acoustic versions of Feed the Fire and Save Our Souls, especially the latter. I didn't like SOS as much when I first heard it on Equipoise but grew to like it more later on. The acoustic version is quite wonderful...the guitars and her voice..well, it feels like live performance. I also like the variation on Feed the Fire, especially the Kate Bush lines. :-) It makes me wonder how she would do Running up the Hill the cover...well, I can see the complaints about it. After such wonderful expressive covers on all her albums, the cover on this seems a bit bare I can't say I really like the blue/black design elements in combination with the photography (a nice photo however). Now all I need to do is bug the local record store to order some.:-) bye the way..does anyone know if she has ever played in Buffalo? or ever planned to? or ever planned to play anywhere near here? Does anyone know if her music is available at any the radio stations? The only station I could think of that would play her is the Buffalo College station since the other radio stations are either top 40 or classic rock. Let me just say that you don't hear anything like Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Cocteau Twins etc etc etc on those. CFNY would probably carry her but they are a Toronto radio station. sigh -Quenby ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 25 Jul 93 05:27:34 -0500 From: "Dennis G Parslow" Subject: Syd Straw Suprise! Date: Sun, 25 Jul 93 09:50:58 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu I just walked downstairs and turned on the radio so I could catch the tail end of the Sunday Morning Acoustics show on WHFS. I'd tried pushing Happy with the DJ a year or two ago, but to no avail So this morning, I turn on the radio and he's playing The Story! Heartened by this, I pick up the phone and dial. When he finally answers, I ask if he could play some Happy Rhodes. "I'm not familliar with that. Is it a band or a person or what?" "She's a singer originally from Albany, though she just moved to Bearsville..." "OH! I just received something by her this week--with a black cover." "Yup, that's it. There's some great acoustic stuff on there." And now the best part: "I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I'll give it a listen this week and probably play something from it on next Sunday's show." I'm personally never awake early enough to hear the entire show, but next Sunday is Mike's Moving Day so *he'll* be up early enough to catch the first part of the show (before I head up to his old place to help out) to let us know if Happy is *finally* being played in DC for the very first time!!! It may just be a puppet show, but it's great! Last night I listened to the sampler tape I made recently. Happy is certainly talented. But you all knew that Kiri, I'm glad to see you attempting to reach Susanne! Hang in and keep trying, and she'll take care of you! And again, congrats on the DJ position Vickie, I passed the review you sent me on to Susanne. I for one would love to see Happy sing on television. It's only a matter of time. I've got most of his albums and seen him in concert several times. To my ears, "Tehillim" is his best, but I'm prejudiced 'cause it's in Hebrew.. That said, I didn't care for "Different Trains". The reason? The vocal tapes were solid material that said what he wanted to say, but the treatment of them, to my ears, diminshed his point -- I think it would have been as effective or more effective to just play the tapes straight without the music. (I've been thinkin about this recently, since my father sent a copy to me of a cassette letter he had sent to my niece in Israel about his Holocaust experiences (he was in the army and helped liberate many of the camps). I played with doing musical things with his voice and adding accompaniments, but determined that *nothing* I could do would make it more effective than the raw voice (One counter-example, though: Schoenberg's "A Survivor from Warsaw", in which the music *does* help the monologue.) I'm also working on a performance piece now, "Minyan (After Chagall)" in which the soundscape is an unedited tape that I recorded at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Again, after trying musical twiddling, I found it more effective to let the voices speak for themselves > urf, having said that, i admit a great deal of interest in hearing mr > Glass' "symphonic" adaption of some of the material from Bowie and > Eno's "low"... are there any ectopinions on this effort? I was underwhelmed with Glass's "Low". It's well crafted, but it seems like he extracted the melodies and just ran them through the Glass-processor. It didn't give me a new view of the materials that I didn't get from the original recordings The last time any Glass music surprised me at all was in the percussiveness of "Powaqqatsi". I will say, though, that I try to catch any movie or show for which he's written the music. His good tast in collaborators is such that, even though his music will probably be the same old stuff, the work of the others will probably be quite interesting -- hell, I even liked parts of "Candyman". (I must say, though, that I like him as a person -- in the times that I've met him, he's seemed warm and interesting; one time when I got to his office to interview him, after walking for about 20 minutes without an umbrella in the pouring rain of Lower Manhattan, he turned into a real yiddishe mama, wnadering around, insisting on brewing up a cup of tea to warm me up while I was trying to interview him. The tape was kind of funny, and he also was quite forthcoming with extensive answers to even my stupidest questions.) ... geeze ... I must be long of wind today .. ======================================================================== Subject: as Klaus as Klaus can be From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de (Cosmic Vagabond) Date: Sun, 25 Jul 93 22:41:46 GMT Before I go into full Klaus mode, some news from rainy Wuppertal Our HBP selections are done, recorded and on the road, or rather in the air. I like the idea of wrapping the tapes in a kite. Will it have two pockets for the tapes, Jeff? ;) No, it's really a great idea and thanks to Jeff for doing it!!! I got an email from Beth two hours ago, despite the problems she has with the systems. Tomorrow she plans to ask the contact Woj mentioned to help her out She also asked me to make sure that all of you know what an excellent job Jeff has done on the kite! She saw it yesterday and describes the colour combination as perfect Yesterday evening we were lucky to see Zap Mama in concert! It was a great experience, 90 minutes of female a-capella music (6 singers now) and a 7th singer being the audience. It was a lot of fun. So if you ever feel the urge to acoustically create a jungle, this is the band to see, hear and support. We were surprised how packed the venue was Unfortunately we only found out on friday that the Rainbirds were playing in Cologne the night before. :( How could we have missed that? I took it out on my street and jogged with it, and it looked like it was flying quite well. But I still want to get it up about 50' and see how it flies I showed the kite to Dad, who merely stated, "That's spectacular." Of course, he's biased. ;-) I haven't yet signed the kite, which means I also haven't written on the name of the kite and an accompanying greeting. As Cathy and Mike can attest, I tend to write all sorts of stuff along a bottom edge--invisble in the air, but nicely readable when you're holding the item. I haven't yet decided what to write on the EctoForm and I'm open to suggestions. I plan to use my kitemaker's signature (a rather stylized JCB) but to not write my actual name on it. My feeling is that the present is from all the Ectophiles and that no one's name should appear on it. I figure it'll be something along the lines of (all appearing along one edge): EctoForm / custom built for Happy Rhodes / 7/25/93 / Happy Birthday from all the Ectophiles I'm open to suggestions/ammendments, etc. (F'rinstance, I typically sign a kite with the date it's completed; would folks rather I use Happy's birthday for the date?) ------- Speaking of Dad, he's *finally* gotten hooked on Happy after 3 years of me forcing him to listen to her stuff. He's been into KaTe for over 5 years, but every time he'd hear Happy he'd say, "That's nice" and then never ask me to buy him a CD (I usually end up buying a lot of CDs for him since I know where to find the Good Stuff [tm]). Well, apparently, a few weeks ago my folks took my sister to the beach. She took her _Warpaint_ CD with her and Dad came home insisting that he needed to tape it! After lecturing him on the evils of dubbing Happy's stuff, I finally allowed that since we already have a total of 8 Happy CDs and 4 tapes in this house, it was probably alright for him to dub it JUST THIS ONCE. Of course, not wanting to let the other half of the tape go to waste, I let him dub Equipoise on the back After he taped _Warpaint_ he was raving to me about it and saying how utterly fantastic it was. Apparently no complaints about any of the songs So then I loan him _Equipoise_ and HR5, expecting him to *really* like the latter (he's always been into folky stuff). When I ask him how he liked 'em, he says, "Well, I've only listened to that 5-song one, but I liked it a lot. All but the first song." "Dad, you liked that first song." "No I didn't, Jeff." "Yes, Dad, you *did*." "I did?" "Yes, Dad. That first song is the *2nd* song on _Warpaint_. You like all of _Warpaint_ Therefore, you like that first song on the EP." "Oh." It's amazing how easy it is to win this arguements with my father. ;-) Jeff (feeling relieved to only have about 10 minutes of sewing left to make the carrying case) |Jeffrey C.
