Subject: Kite and hostel Hello, I've been reading about the kite idea for Happy Rhode's birthday and I think it is wonderful! Would someone be so kind as to send me the address where I can send my donation? And..is anyone going to take a picture of this so we can see what the finished product looks like? hostel stuff... Well, if anyone was inclined to visit Buffalo, NY (for whatever odd unexplained and bizarre reasons they might have) I would be glad to offer a couch (or my room if you didn't mind horrendous decor) in our spacious but crowded University Heights house Of course the drawbacks are: -there are 5 people who live there but numbers vary depending on who is brought home. At our height of visitor friendly housing, we had around 9 people in the house over the weekend. Other than that the house is very quiet most of the time -the house is ugly. It is known as The Pumpkin House (alternatively, Chez Pumpkin, Le Chateau du Pumpkin) because it is orange. Rather distinctive. It is being repainted...to whatever lovely shade happens to be on sale or discontinued at the local hardware store, so the name may change -We just lost our garage. Though it was an eyesore (the leaning garage of Rounds Avenue) and we could not park cars in it, it offered the valued service of being someplace for us to attach a clothesline to. Now our backyard is covered with the shrapnel of its demise. We *hope* our slumlord will arrange for the cleanup -Cars. I don't drive. The other cars belong to the people I live with and one is very nice, one looks like an apartment (containing everything necessary if he should decide to live in it) and one is a big, ugly blue stationwagon who belongs to our midnight lurker. Therefore we would not be able to offer transportation -We have 3 bikes in the house and two of them have flat tires (pathetic isn't it?) -We are all working full time over the summer so no one is really free until the evening and the weekends -More about my room. It is a second floor room with a slanted ceiling that you find in many attic rooms. The walls are dark brown rough wood They occassionally bleed sawdust on me. The floor (inadequately covered by my rug) is yellow flowered linoleum. I have one narrow window that looks out over the remains of our garage with no window shade. A towel covers it instead. Those are the basics..I don't want to bore you with how my room is set up, what posters I have, etc which make it homey Now that I write it out, I realize what pathetic conditions we live in And our house is nice compared to others we've seen! *sigh* such is student life. ;-) Some nice things about Buffalo: -Activities. What does one do in Buffalo? The University Games are over with and we have only one real Art museum. The Albright Knox Art Gallery known for its extensive collection of Modern Art. The Science Museum is offering its Star Trek exhibit (yay!) and the Historical Society is quite a nice place as well. Shakespeare in Delaware Park is going on...Romeo and Juliet is the next play being offered. There are clubs around here (I saw Matthew Sweet at the Icon last year and Morrissey at Shea's) There are art shows going on downtown at Theater Place and I've heard that Elmwood Avenue is a neat place to hang out. The only problem is transportation but I suppose that could be got around Well, look at that. I actually managed to say something nice about Buffalo! I guess things happen here which don't necessarily require mugging, shooting, arson and beer If anyone is inclined to pass this way, just e-mail. I believe my address is now included in the Ecto list (not my shoe size though! hehe) and if you forget who I am, just send out a cry for Buffalooooo.. -Quenby ======================================================================== Date: 23 Jul 1993 15:12:00 -0400 (EDT) From: "she listens like her head's on fire.." Subject: new music Hello all.. I'm back from lurking and ready to annoy you all.;-) After 3 weeks of no money (stuff is changing around work) I now have money and a desire to blow some of it on fun stuff Tribe sounds very interesting and so do the Cranberries. I caught a Cranberries song on Mtv one night and was definitely interested. I have also developed an interest in Bjork due to her song "Human Behavior" However, I should restrain myself. I received an invitation to Columbia house and decided to accept! (I've been waiting for one of those) I'm just too impatient though. Its only been two weeks and I can't wait to hear the stuff I ordered. For anyone's interest my choices include.. Clannad-Fuaim Smiths-The Queen is Dead Lush-Gala, Nanci Griffiths-One Fair Summer Evening Enya-Enya Sarah McLauglin-Solace Kate Bush-The Dreaming, Never Forever I've heard all these and own some of them on tape (taped from other people's cds) but threw in a few new things that I've wanted to listen to. like Lush and early Clannad. And of course I am eagerly awaiting HR5! I like the unplugged trend, at least where it applies to artists I enjoy I like hearing pared down, acoustic versions of songs that I like. It reminds me of seeing a concert where not all the effects produced in the studio can be duplicated. It also give the voice a chance to shine Books: After reading the other DIB's I think to myself, how could I forget the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?! The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch! or the other books on my shelf? I've got the top and ribs of the kite fully sewn together. Today I cut out the pieces of the graphic and they're laying on the basement floor looking splendid. As soon as I scrounge up some rubber cement or decide on another method of holding the pieces to the sail as I sew, I'll begin fastening it all together. With luck, it could be done by the end of the weekend Brni asked about the address for donations. Once again, donations can be sent to: Jeff Burka 2950 Macomb St, NW Washington, DC 20008-3315 There is no suggested donation, though $5-10 seems to be the popular amount, with a strong preference toward $5. ;-) Donations can also be made through Doug if you have a tape account with him UK/European Ectophiles can take advantage of Geoff Parks' offer to write a mass check, thus missing the hassle of everyone doing individual (and costly) currency exchange I've had some questions about folks getting to see the finished product I'll be taking photos of both the graphic before it's sewn to the kite (the detail work will show up better) and of the finished kite whilst flying. Mike will scan 'em and they'll be put in the Ecto archives. I'll also mail UUencoded versions to folks w/o FTP access. I may be able to send out a couple of actual prints through snailmail, but would prefer to avoid that if possible. I suppose it depends on how many people clamor for prints Jeff |Jeffrey C. And if that is indeed Klausing, is it a dangerous and addictive habit I should avoid at all costs? Perhaps soon I will figure out what a footah is Meredith successfully convinces me not to buy any Bela Fleck discs, since I only got to see them live and wasn't excited. Of course it almost sounds like a different band. When I saw them there was only one banjo and no e-bowing going on at all. Maybe they cut out a bit of the self-congratulatory patter (there was a lot of that) and added some of the above I had similar concert experiences at the 9:30 club, where bands that seem to get no airplay or publicity sell out when I go there It can be very disappointing. On the other hand, here in CA I have taken to going to most shows without tickets, since almost every show I go to there are people hanging out selling tickets outside. Otherwise, it's the trip to TicketMaster, where no matter how close to the front of the line you are, you still can't get good seats, but you are always entitled to a good service charge I guess this is not recommended for groups. I've always done it solo, but have had the option of multiple tickets every time (2) Sold out 10000 Maniacs I had to turn down 10th row center at $8 less than cover price because I was solo. Ended up with near the back for $5 less than list. For The The, which was not sold out, I got $25 tickets for $15, and they were in the 6th row off to the side. My only concern is that these people may well be the ones that are making it impossible for me to get good tickets in a standard way (although some of them are just people unloading extra tickets for legitimate reasons). I don't really want to support them, although it is hard to see how a loss of 10 dollars can be a good moneymaking deal, but if they can steal the tickets through connections. Tonight is the Peter Gabriel concert, also not sold out, and I would probably be willing to pay more than list for a good seat.
