But the guy who set all the plans in motion in the first place just figgered we'd get the tickets at the door (last few times he's been to 9:30 club it hasn't been sold out and the Cranberries are hardly a hugely well-known band). So, not trusting Craig's intuition, I went to buy tickets on Monday. Already sold out. So I'm not seeing the Cranberries tonight. Grrrr. On the other hand, yesterday Beth "forced" me to take her around to some of my preferred CD shops. She then "forced" me to borrow 4 of the CDs she bought, including Wendy MaHarry's _Fountain of Youth_ (wonderful!), Lava Hay's eponymous album (also wonderful) and the new The Story album (also wonderful but not quite as wonderful as those other two). The other disc is a best-of Joan Armatrading which I like but don't love. The new Story disc is quite good. It took me *ages* to get into _Grace in Gravity_, and I liked _The Angel in the House_ on the first listen. This may simply have been a matter of being properly prepped in what to expect. I'm probably going to include JHJ on my HBP tape (wish there were a few extra days in July -- man, the summer's *over* already!), since it's short and somewhat rare. I've been working very hard on getting a good version of the Shark song, now that she's ok'ed its inclusion. All I know is that recording vocals is *even* *harder* than laying the instrumental track. Not only do I have to worry about timing (very tough) but singing *in* tune to an *out of tune* piano that's missing a few keys is *not* easy. Now I know why it takes Kate so long to produce a record... If you think writing, playing, singing, and recording original music is easy, try it yourself. (not to say that any of you think it's easy, but just listening to a CD does not convey the full level of difficulty in achieving a polished finished product -- makes me appreciate artists even more, esp. someone like Happy who does most of it herself) I started an a cappella arrangement of 4th of July, and I listened to it so much I think I wore it out... now I'm kinda sick of it. bummer. :-( -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 21 Jul 93 13:23:11 PDT From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: Harmoniums in unlikely places I didn't contribute anything to past harmonium discussions, thinking I had probably never even heard one before, until I notice this morning, while listening to Passion-Sources, that the first track had harmonium on it. It's a piece by Nesrat Fateh Ali Kahn (or something like that), and the harmonium blends in with lots of percussion and voices. It's a pretty interesting album, which I gather many people know of. It's the companion to Peter Gabriel's Passion, the soundtrack to the Last Temptation of Christ. Which also jogged my memory to a piece called Music for a Found Harmonium, by simon Jaffies (sp) of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It's on their Broadcasting from Home album (1984) and also on Patrick Streets' generally uninteresting Irish Times. I'm hoping that harmoniums were actually something someone had expressed interest in, and I haven't just invented something to babble about. neal ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 21 Jul 93 13:41:04 PDT From: Neal R. After about 20 minutes, I got kind of bored with it, so my recollection of it was mediocre. I tried again a few weeks later and had a similar experience. While visiting a friend, I brought it with me because she was curious, having heard "What's UP?" (What's Going On) on the radio. That song, which I'd never listened to alone, was fantastic! And then the album was sounding wonderful too! And then I lost interest by the end again. Until I get around to listening to the album backwards, I can only guess that it is a great half album. By and large, it is a lot harder than the What's Up song, but the styles do cover a pretty wide territory. I'd recommend it with reservations (say, at $8 but not at $15), unless it continues to grow on me. Chris Sampson - attacks my spelling, which is consistantly poor anyway, so I'm not overly concerned. (But I do know how to spell mobile, and even pronounce it, so don't point out my intentionally misspelled subject line to me:) Anyway, the mobile really is cool, regardless of how you spell it, and perhaps Chris can illuminate us on the proper spelling. neal ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 21 Jul 93 21:50 EDT From: robert@deepspace.nj00802.sai.com (Robert Lovejoy) Subject: Keeping up...
