Erm... south-ish west England, near to Bristol (about 120 miles west of London). Solsbury Hill is near the villages of Northend and Batheaston, which are about two-three miles out. I live in Batheaston. For the historically minded: Solsbury Hill is the site of an iron age hill fort, and so the top of it is virtually flat (and not bad for kite flying). It is now owned by the National Trust, although residents of Batheaston have animal grazing rights there in perpetuity (wow, I'll go and buy some goats :-)). It is also the site at which the legendary King Bladud did his magic stunts; this is the subject of a fictional work called "The Winged Man" by ... erm ... someone or other. > Confused minds want to know.... > (tho the pubs idea sounds good.. Copperman Subject: Re: ecto #657 I certainly agree that the Maryland beaches are very different than the San Diego beaches. Having not grown up on either coast, I never developed the habit of going to the beach. In Maryland, it is a major chore to go to the beach, as John noted, a long drive that generally involves lots of traffic throughout the summer. So, I only went once. Here, the beech, any number of beeches, are only minutes away (although the latest city proposal/scam is to charge for all beach parking at the end of the summer. Of course, there is great public outcry, so we shall see.) I believe the sea lions are much more plentiful here, and the weather more conducive to beaching, unless the more heat and humidity you have, the better John, you should try the monuments at night. It is a very different experience. The Lincoln and Vietnam and Jefferson memorials are all open 24 hours, and I have never managed to find a time when there isn't other people there. They command even more respect when they are relatively deserted and all lit up at 2 in the morning. Particularly the Vietnam Memorial. The black wall, glowing black? in the dark and stretching and disappearing into the gloom is very sobering. (I never read of any violence in that area, but I can't guarantee it.) THe Washington Monument is also open til midnight through the summer/tourist season, but not year round. You can always walk up to it, stand at it's base and look straight up the smooth marble sides, or step back and watch the bats flying around. For me, the Air and Space Museum is the obvious first museum, but one that doesn't really merit return visits. Unlike the art galleries, which are fantastic. The National Gallery is full of old masters, and the East wing (of the National Gallery) has plenty of cool modern things, and a great giant Caldor mobile. The underground African and Asian museums are miracles of finding and using an interesting space. THe way it opens up under ground is really impressive, and it's generally full of interesting things, too. I guess I have probably gone on long enough, but there sure are lots of cool things to do in the area. I'll probably send more, maybe directly would be more appropriate, in the future. THe sad news is that almost all of her brilliant ideas can first be found there, and then all the rest of her albums just keep plucking stuff from her box. They all sound good, but I haven't heard any new ideas from her in 10 years (though the old ideas are still ahead of our times). I second (or third) the cry for you to find the Cocteau Twins' Treasure. It is hands down my favorite of theres. And what was that first Joe Jackson album....Can't recall, but that's my vote for him. Also, the Pogues (talk about a band that really faded). Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is truly brilliant, and what hooked me on them, but when I finally picked up the previous album, Red Roses for Me, I had a new fave. Maybe I've just over played RS&L, but Red Roses seems to survive the years and the listens even better for me....more traditional and rowdier at the same time, I can't help but screaming along "What'll you have?
