That's always a dangerous thing to do, but as usual I managed to escape with the least damage... ;) I found Tribe's ABORT used, and woj picked up their new one, SLEEPER on sale- I think I'm going to have to buy it too. I liked it a *lot*, much better than ABORT. I looked everywhere for the new one by The Story, but every place I went was totally clueless. What's the album called, by the way? That may make it a little bit easier to find... Speaking of clueless, here is a paraphrase of a conversation I had with an employee of Cutler's in New Haven this afternoon: Me: You have Jane Siberry in the Folk section. She should be in the Rock/ Pop section. She: No, she's folk. Me: Why do you say that? She: Her first album was folk, so we file her there. Me: Even though her subsequent albums don't even begin to approach folk, and her new one is co-produced by Brian Eno, and people who come in to buy her stuff know this, so they're not going to look for her in the folk section? She: Her first album was folk, so we file her there. Me: Even though her first album, which could be considered folk, sure, wasn't released in this country until 11 years after it was originally recorded, and you didn't start carrying it until then, when she already had four non-folk albums out, which you did carry? She: Her first album was folk, so we file her there. Me: That's really silly. As I said before, people are idiots, and should be shot on sight... no matter *how* habit-forming it may be! Saturday August 7, 1993. Anytime after 1:00pm, lasting until whenever. Christo Boek from Australia will be in Chicago that day, so we're going to have a bit of a party. It will combine Katemas (bday July 30) Happyness (bday August 9) and ToriFest (bday ? I forgot). That means, of course, that all 3 artists will get attention throughout the day, just so you know in advance. (Just in case: Kate Bush, Happy Rhodes & Tori Amos :-)) We have video and audio wrt Kate and Tori, lots of rare stuff. No Happy video, but audio galore, including live stuff & interviews. We also have tons of other artists in our audio and video collection, and requests are fine. BYOD&M (Bring Your Own Drinks & Munchies) Our house is topsy-turvey, but I promise to sweep :-) (Unfortunately, Chris will be out-of-town. He'll be in Los Angeles for SIGGRAPH.) We do have 2 cats, just so you know. Kitchen's reserved for smokers. I should also warn that it might get hot. Our teeny-tiny air conditioner might go "ack!" when it sees people. It's very shy :-). Our address: Gaffa Central (Vickie Mapes & Chris Williams) 1627 W. Farwell, #2N Chicago, IL (60626) (312) 508-5283 (aka 508-KATE) RSVP is requested, but not necessary. Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 19 Jul 93 3:18:13 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: "I know it sounds crazy..." "I'm only grabbing words, just to ease the pain..." HTR I'm really sorry I posted while in a depressed mood the other night. I really hate it when I do that because it's impossible to explain the thoughts behind the phrases without sounding totally bonkers. Not that I've let *that* stop me before :-) but my mind goes through such weird contortions that it's even hard to write my own name, let alone what's happening with me. While I know that whatever I posted would be ok, and I know that it would go a long way to explain odd behaviour on my part I feel that I've burdened Ecto too much already with my problems and I can't bring myself to dump anymore mindjunk on you all. But things slip out every now and then, and then I kick myself and end up writing something like this to apologise for it. It's just one of dozens of vicious circles I get myself into in my life. Pfft! "...all my energy is exhausted on me" Happy says so many things that zero in. (Newer Ectophiles who are going "huh?": I suffer from clinical depression, borderline manic-depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a few other things that I can't spell. I'm working on it, though I seem to take 10 steps back for every one step forward. I am not well, and I won't be for a long time, but I can "maintain" wonderfully well, considering. For those who don't know me, I assure you that I'm not dangerous, and no one should worry about saying anything that might cause a problem. There are valid reasons why I am the way I am, really.) Obviously, I won't let any of this affect the party, or Christo's stay. Generally, I have 3 modes. The first is where I shut down completely, and I get very little done, except go to work (it's mindless work :-)) and the second mode is when the mental pain takes over, and I get very little done, except go to work. The 3rd mode is the way I grew up, being able to "forget" that anything's wrong. My happiest times are in that mode, which I can put myself into, for short periods of time, when I need/want to. Geez, this sounds so weird. I'm starting to get into the explanations that I just said above I didn't want to do, but then I realized that, without some sort of explanation, some people might wonder how I'd be able to handle having visitors, or this party. I *automatically* go into "forget" mode when we have visitors, once they're here. My mind is totally pre-occupied with them. Lots to see/hear/think/talk about, and I truly am *happy*, it's not an act or a put-on or a sham, and I wouldn't want anyone to think otherwise. I might worry and fret and be insecure about if they'll like me in person, but that all happens well before the meeting, it's something I have to work out for myself. The bottom line is that I love meeting the people who drop by while they're in Chicago, and anyone is welcome, anytime. Our home is definitely open as an Ecto-hostel, for anyone who wants to come, and you'll be kept busy :-). Hmmm, there's something else I wanted to say, but I honestly can't remember what it was. Anyway, I hope some of that made sense. Vickie "And if there's a reason for my mind, it's been lost far behind..." And any time any of you are visiting the Bath area, please feel free to impose yourselves on my hospitality; all I ask is a couple of weeks' notice, 'cos I tend to either be away or have other friends invading the place (a full house is a Happy house!). Subject: What a difference Kate makes... Another thing that can put me into mode 3: New Kate! I can't tell the source, but we've actually heard 3 more new Kate songs! Tonight we heard: "Eat The Music" (It is indeed salsa-ish, and I like it a lot. It will be great as a single and I think the video will be lots of fun.) "Rubberband Girl" (This is the song that Prince is on, we're pretty sure. Think "Ken" or "I'm Still Waiting" and know that this belongs on the same shelf. It's very understandable why Sony wanted this song as the 1st single. I bet it will be the 2nd. Kate fans with heart conditions had better get their nitroglycerine perscriptions re-filled.) "And So Is Love" (Beautiful!! Classic Kate ballad, except that it's bluesy and ballsy. Eric Clapton's guitar is on this one. Patented Eric Clapton.) Apparently, these 4 songs (the 4th is "Moments of Pleasure") were very carefully chosen to be presented to Sony here in America. They're definitely "commercial"-sounding, as commercial as Kate can sound. Which is fine with me, Kate needs a hit. Well, she doesn't "need" a hit, but it would be nice. Why not? Hits or not, I like them (and will almost certainly come to love the ones I don't already) and I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the album. I know that lots of gaffains will *hate* these songs, but I'm willing to be suprised :-/ :-) Vickie (one of Yowsa & Merry) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Vickie "Fight for your right "My ears are lucky to hear vickie@pilot.njin.net to have a monster" TA these glorious songs" HR _________ "Imagination sets in, then |_ _ | _ The Happy Rhodes mailing list all the voices begin" KB |__|_ ||_| ecto-request@ns1.rutgers.edu -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Searching for Happy Rhodes reviews, articles, interviews, mentions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ======================================================================== From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk Subject: Re: oh my! July is passing faster than you think, and the HBP deadline is under TWO WEEKS away. If you want to contribute to the project, do so NOW!! As usual, the announcement is tacked onto the end of this post. Currently, I have tapes in hand from: Albert Philipsen Steve Fagg Doug Burks Dirk Kastens Angelos Kyrlidis I've heard or read about other people who say they will mail tapes. If you haven't, don't forget! Bob, don't worry about your 14min contribution. I'll squeeze it into ten minutes by dubbing it at high speed. :) Seriously, I'm very happy to make an exception for an original contribution. Finally, I'll throw in my vote for sending Happy a Jeff-designed and constructed kite, providing he wants to and can do so in time. Also Klaus made a good suggestion, which I'll pass on. If you want to contribute to Jeff's efforts and if you have a cassette account with me, just let me know, and I'll combine the contributions into one check to mail to Jeff. Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Greetings, On August 9th, our heroine Happy Tyler Rhodes will turn 28 years old. Such a day definitely should not pass without some collective gift from Ecto. Thus this is the announcement for the 1993 (or 28 AHR (or 35 AKT)) version of the Happy Birthday Project. The collective Ecto gift will be a tape or two full of greetings and music collected from Ectophiles. Anyone who wishes to contribute should put together a tape of personal greetings, wishes, their chosen songs, and any introduction for the song(s). All of this will be compiled onto one or more tapes which will be mailed to Happy in time for her birthday, possibly along with a small additional gift. That's the gist of things, so let's try to anticipate any questions. * What songs should I choose? Choose any song that you would like Happy to hear. The only restriction is that your total contribution of greetings and music should not exceed ten minutes. Thus you can even choose two or even three short songs, if you so desire. In spite of this, feel free to contribute some extra songs, in case some troublesome empty space needs to be filled. If you do so, be sure to indicate which songs are your true contribution. * Recording and mailing a tape seems like a lot of effort, can I avoid any of that? The only way is if your chosen song is buried somewhere deep in my collection, a possibility (though not a likelihood, knowing this crew :) ). In that case, I can record it straight from my copy, avoiding one copying generational loss in the process. It's certainly worth a try, so why not check? * How can I add my personal greetings, when I have no equipment to record my voice? We have two different options available. One, Mitch has volunteered to use his mellifluous tones to record any greetings you wish, so e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] a script for him to record. Two, if you are too shy to write anything, Mitch will record an introduction for you, including your name, city/country of residence, your selection, and anything else that pops into his mind. :) * Where do I send my contribution? All contributions should be mailed on cassette tape to me: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum St C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA * Can I get a copy of the finished tape? The final tape will be available to any Ectophiles via the tape dubbing project. Contributors who send me an actual tape will receive a free copy of the tape, including free postage and packaging. However, if it runs onto two (or three (or four (or ...)) tapes, the additional tapes will be available under the tape dubbing project conditions. * What happens if someone else picks my song? In the past, Ectophiles posted their selections to avoid this. However, I personally prefer surprises on the final tape, so will not require this. (Should you desire to post them, though, don't let this stop you). Also given this group's eclectic tastes displayed in past similar efforts, duplications are quite unlikely. If that unlikelihood does occur, the duplications will be handled on a first-come basis, another good reason to submit more than one song and to submit early. * What is the deadline? We are going to get it out on time this year, even if I have to be a bitch (or whatever the male equivalent is :) ) about it. The deadline for all ends of the project is August 1st. Anything sent after that date will never see the light of day. While that sounds deep in the future, time flies, especially in the summer or with slow postal service. Act now!! Contribute early and often!! :) I hope this covers everything. If you have questions, problems, or comments, feel free to ask me personally or raise them here.
