Whatta coincidence. I saw the Canadian premiere of "Orlando" last night and one of the first things I thought was "gee, I bet a lot of people on Ecto would like this film!" :-) Personally, I quite liked it. As others are saying, it's *incredibly* lush and colourful, and the costumes are just phenominal. However, I don't think the scenery overshadowed Swanson's (sp?) performance. And the soundtrack is also wonderful - I'll likely pick it up this weekend. >>The feminist points seemed rather blunt and >>obviously stated, perhaps that is due to the age of the novel, but it >>did seem the director had her hand in on it too. Yeah, it was a bit "in your face" in a couple of points, especially the scene with the three poets, but I think it worked well within the context of the film. >Billy Zane was... I thank you all for your generous vote of confidence on those extra four minutes of my HBP tape! I hope that Happy, and all of you, enjoy the songs I've sent. They were written by myself and my very good friend Rich Laferriere, who plays guitar and provides vocals. As an added bonus of this project, I played the tape for a colleague of mine at work. He's one of our audio engineers, and in addition to his duties at Modern Video, he also is on staff at Alpha Wave recording studios near Philly. He asked me yesterday if I would be willing to play bass for some recording sessions, so I may be getting a whole new second career out of this! Wow! Anyway, the tapes are in the mail, plural because I enclosed some extras to get my copy of the completed HBP tape. Thanks again Doug, and thanks everybody for your support. I promised no more Jethro, but today's science project features the amazing program Babble! Having already typed the lyrics to "To The Funnyfarm" and "The Chase", I added the lyrics to "Feed The Fire" and mixed them all into Babble! Babble sort of scrambles them together with unpredictable results: I feel the disaster and when I feel it coming on and I'm trying to run, I'll be efficient at making ashtrays And when I don't live burning force I want my neck Forever more and evermore. And when I feel the rain and I can feel it coming on... Can't go any faster, I'll do nothing but catch the chase is a road straight to my heart I live life. And I've such a live burning force And I see my way through this world of his heat The chase is a road straight to my heart And I can feel it coming on and I'm losing I want my fondest dreams realized, And I was duly sworn to be alive. There is a road straight to run, I want my mind and I'm very old I thrive on you for your expressions. I've lost my way to go back to the chase is on And when I go, I'll do nothing but catch the trees So many powerful beings And it's lingering like death I'm on and I'm losing Can't go, I think I'm beat And I feel it coming on, the moonrays Your music has set me free. And it's doing its best There's wisdom and I've such a different way that I'll always be alive. I thrive on the wind and I'm very old And I can feel his cold Travelled by those with me. My feet are lucky to rely on The chase is on, the chase is a different way that you've all touched me how The chase is on the chase is on and I'll not find it before I'm losing I feed the gifted who gave so much to rely on And when I feed the funnyfarm And I see my way, I feel it coming on A different frame of his cold There is a road straight to the funnyfarm Glorious songs of his heat The chase is a different way that I'll always be alive. And I can feel it coming on My neck I've lost my fondest dreams realized, don't know and I was duly sworn to run, my ears are lucky to rely on... A different frame of his heat The chase is on my bros And I see things you'll never see my teddy bear to my heart And I was duly sworn to be efficient at making ashtrays And when I want my legs are many more to rely on and it's lingering like death I've lost my way that I'll always be alive. Glorious songs of his heat The chase is on... My mind is a road straight to the funnyfarm I live life. Date: Fri, 16 Jul 93 18:44:38 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Are folks really interested in a kite for Happy? Here's the scoop: Yes, I'm willing to make a kite. Ideally I'd do a "FlowForm"; this is a completely soft kite that *anybody* can fly. Size would be 36"x32" (8 square feet). For reference, this is the same size as Mike's NeXTform. This may prove untenable in terms of cost and what not, in which case I'd probably do an Eddy (a bowed diamond kite almost guaranteed to fly). An Eddy would be cheaper, but it's a far less interesting shape and it's harder to fly. Graphically speaking, I'd probably try to applique the 3-color version of the Ecto scan (ie the version that appears on the Ecto t-shirts) in 3 shades of blue (midnight, medium/royal, light) on a white kite with blue edge-binding. Cost for a FlowForm T-8 as described would probably run between $30 and $50, depending on whether or not I can get scraps of the 3 shades of blue (I may be able to bum scraps from friends, otherwise I'd need to buy a yard of each color at $5.35/yd). For comparison, the company that makes the FlowForm commercially sells this size for $40 without any sort of graphic or other decoration. A custom kite like this would probably cost you at least $100 to commission. I'm more than happy to donate the time/labor but at this point I can't really put in any money, 'cept maybe for the incidentals like the edge binding material and the various colors of thread I'd need to do it right. If I get the go-ahead on this, the one thing I'll need is for someone to take the ecto gif I described above and print it out for me enlarged (on multiple sheets of paper which I could then cut'n'tape together) in a version roughly 32" wide (and however long that would come out to without distorting the aspect ratio). I'd need to get that print out as soon as possible. My time is going to be iffy what with appartment searching and other preparations for school, and while it's certainly possible to get this project done by Happy's birthday, I'd really need to get it underway. This afternoon, my stars told me I Had to go record shopping on my way home from work. Eeeep, I hate when that happens! Fortunately, they were having a sale. :> The damage: Bjork, DEBUT Aimee Mann, WHATEVER Robyn Hitchcock, QUEEN ELVIS ($4.99 for a CD can't be beat!) A tape called EVENING IN VENICE: Gabrieli, Vivaldi etc.- $1.99, see above. :> I'd already heard everything off the Aimee Mann album, so I knew I'd like it, and the Robyn has been a tape fave of mine for a while. But I was buying the Bjork on the basis of one track serendipitously heard on the radio today at lunch ("When Venus Was A Boy") and the fact that Bjork is Bjork. I wasn't disappointed. This album is what we Sugarcubes fans who have long been sick to death of Einar's tiresome, annoying antics have been waiting for. He's gone, and you can listen to an entire track and enjoy Bjork's voice without worrying about when he's going to pop in and ruin the entire experience. Musically it's quite varied- "There's More To Life Than This" has INTERNATIONAL DANCE HIT written all over it, and there are two other tracks which show off a few things she learned during her time with 808 State. Then there are two songs which hearken back to her long-ago album of jazz standards done in Icelandic, very torch-songy complete with orchestration, and one song, "Aeroplane" is a mishmosh of techno, torch and Indian/Middle Eastern flavors. (Part of the album was recorded in Bombay, which makes perfect sense, and shows throughout.) Basically, there's something here for everyone, and if you're into Bjork's idiosyncratic voice and singing style, this album is for you. I think it's going to do very, very well- it's quite accessible, without being Top-40 dross. I like it a lot. Two pinky toes up and wiggling. :> Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 16 Jul 93 22:13:14 EDT From: jessica@maurolycus.rutgers.edu (jessica) Subject: kites!
