After the third listen I still couldn't remember a single song. But after the fourth repetition it suddenly began to grow on me. I've put it on top of my what-to-buy-next-list. FtBoW is a very quiet, dark and mystic album, and it takes getting used to, but then it's wonderful. Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion DM with real drums, heavy guitars, Uilleann pipes and real strings. But still dark and melancholic. IMO the sound is a bit overloaded, so it's difficult to listen to the whole album at once. World Party - Bang! A very eventful album full of brilliant ideas. Sounds like a mixture of +O-> and XTC. The last song takes 30 minutes but after five minutes it fades out and continues three minutes before the end, this means: 22 minutes of silence!!! Bruce Hornsby - Harbor Lights I never expected a jazz album from Hornsby. But it's great: excellent piano playing, captivating grooves, with contributions from Pat Metheny and Phil Collins. The Boomers - Art of Living Absolutely perfect Westcoast album (in the Eagles vein). The guys know how to play. Too perfect, IMO. East 17 - Walthamstow Typical hiphop/house album. Has to be heard loud - very loud. I played the Gold - Paws on the Floor remix again and again. What a bass, what a groove :-) Albums that didn't thrill me: Phil Carmen - Walkin' the Dog The Hooters - Out of Body Lemonheads - It's a Shame About Ray Peacock Palace - Adding Wings (I like Like a Snake, but that's all) and that's all for now. If you want to contribute, ACT NOW! It's _much_ later than you think. As usual, the actual HBP announcement is attached at the end of this post. Also, I am asking for some suggestions and a volunteer. For the latter, I would like someone who has a better touch at wrapping presents than my own ham-fisted one. All you would have to do is to take the tape(s) I mail you, add a card and a small gift, wrap it nicely, and mail it to Happy in time for her birthday (which probably restricts this to a US resident). For the former, I am asking for suggestions as to what that small gift should be, if any. The only previous one I am aware of was a warm fuzzy blue scarf that accompanied the 1991 Happy Gift Project gift. Feel free to post your suggestions. As for the tape end of things, I still only have three contributions so far: Albert Philipsen Steve Fagg Doug Burks Other Ectophiles have stated their intentions to contribute, but I have no tapes from them yet. The time is getting late, gentle Ecto-folk! Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Greetings, On August 9th, our heroine Happy Tyler Rhodes will turn 28 years old. Such a day definitely should not pass without some collective gift from Ecto. Thus this is the announcement for the 1993 (or 28 AHR (or 35 AKT)) version of the Happy Birthday Project. The collective Ecto gift will be a tape or two full of greetings and music collected from Ectophiles. Anyone who wishes to contribute should put together a tape of personal greetings, wishes, their chosen songs, and any introduction for the song(s). All of this will be compiled onto one or more tapes which will be mailed to Happy in time for her birthday, possibly along with a small additional gift. That's the gist of things, so let's try to anticipate any questions. * What songs should I choose? Choose any song that you would like Happy to hear. The only restriction is that your total contribution of greetings and music should not exceed ten minutes. Thus you can even choose two or even three short songs, if you so desire. In spite of this, feel free to contribute some extra songs, in case some troublesome empty space needs to be filled. If you do so, be sure to indicate which songs are your true contribution. * Recording and mailing a tape seems like a lot of effort, can I avoid any of that? The only way is if your chosen song is buried somewhere deep in my collection, a possibility (though not a likelihood, knowing this crew :) ). In that case, I can record it straight from my copy, avoiding one copying generational loss in the process. It's certainly worth a try, so why not check? * How can I add my personal greetings, when I have no equipment to record my voice? We have two different options available. One, Mitch has volunteered to use his mellifluous tones to record any greetings you wish, so e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] a script for him to record. Two, if you are too shy to write anything, Mitch will record an introduction for you, including your name, city/country of residence, your selection, and anything else that pops into his mind. :) * Where do I send my contribution? All contributions should be mailed on cassette tape to me: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum St C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA * Can I get a copy of the finished tape? The final tape will be available to any Ectophiles via the tape dubbing project. Contributors who send me an actual tape will receive a free copy of the tape, including free postage and packaging. However, if it runs onto two (or three (or four (or ...)) tapes, the additional tapes will be available under the tape dubbing project conditions. * What happens if someone else picks my song? In the past, Ectophiles posted their selections to avoid this. However, I personally prefer surprises on the final tape, so will not require this. (Should you desire to post them, though, don't let this stop you). Also given this group's eclectic tastes displayed in past similar efforts, duplications are quite unlikely. If that unlikelihood does occur, the duplications will be handled on a first-come basis, another good reason to submit more than one song and to submit early. * What is the deadline? We are going to get it out on time this year, even if I have to be a bitch (or whatever the male equivalent is :) ) about it. The deadline for all ends of the project is August 1st. Anything sent after that date will never see the light of day. While that sounds deep in the future, time flies, especially in the summer or with slow postal service. Act now!! Contribute early and often!! :) I hope this covers everything. If you have questions, problems, or comments, feel free to ask me personally or raise them here. From your description, it sounds like they gave pretty much the same synopsis of the "Sweet Relief" album. The song was quite heavy, and I liked it quite a bit. I tried to pay close attention to it, but I was driving at the time... :) I'm still waiting for WHFS to play Happy too. I'm also calling them, but I guess we need even more people... ===================== Meredith, I saw one of your sisters books in my local B. Dalton book store. It looked like a LONG story... ===================== When my wife and I went back to San Diego last month for the first time since moving (and hence, since finding Happy), I played a mix for our cousins. Their tastes in music are similar to ours and they LOVED Happy! I've sent them out a sampler, with all the ordering info. First off, let me say that I was very proud of myself as over the course of many years and multiple moves, I had never broken a bottle. All this would change after the first couple of notes after Peter's protracted intro "Ooooh Oh Oh". Forturnately, the bottles that got shaken off of their selves and broke weren't very rare. ks ksilver@startek.com "Peter would like to apologize for rhyming garment with varmint twice on the same record." Never as powerful, IMO, because he didn't play songs that were as powerful. Blood of Eden was the hilite for mean, Askew did well as Sinead. Biko was awesome but people stopped singing after the drums stopped!!!!!! And then he came out and did Here Comes the Flood!!! After Biko. I thought this was unprecedented. No Lay Your Hands on Me. No Love to be Loved. Washing of the Water was another hilite. I could have done with out Talk to Me and Steam (both weak songs), so I'm glad he got them out of the way first. In Your Eyes was fine, but hey, I'd much rather have heard Mercy Street or Big Time! I never knew EVERYBODY loved Solsbury Hill SO much. It was almost gross. Sledgehammer I knew people loved and it was good, but again, I think there are better songs on So. I was great to see him. I've never seen anyone introduce and re-introduce and re-re-re-re-introduce his band so much. The stage was nice and it looked great surrounded by the sea of people. The lights were nice and the revolving screen was nice. I would have gladly sacrificed Shock the Monkey for I've Got The Touch.
