But in an extreme emergency, I suppose I could live with an exclusive diet of the following, in no partic- ular order: Warren Zevon, _Excitable Boy_ Jade Warrior, _Last Autumn's Dream_ Laura Nyro, _The First Songs_ __________, _Eli and the Thirteenth Confession_ __________, _New York Tendaberry_ Carly Simon, _Playing Possum_ Rodrigo, _Concerto De Aranjuez_ (regardless of orchestra) Salem 66, _Natural Disasters, National Treasures_ _Absolute Beginners_ Soundtrack Christine Lavin, _Beau Woes_ _______________, _Future Fossils_ _______________, _Attainable Love_ Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, _Greatest Hits_ (nobody's perfect :-) ) Olivia Newton-John, _Physical_ (proves the point twice over) Tom Robinson, _Back in the Old Country_ Holly Near, _You Can Know All I Am_ Garrison Keillor, _Local Man Comes to the City_ _The Dark Side of the Xmas Tree_ That's actually 18, but what the hell. If I really had to, I suppose I could invent an imaginary doppelganger to allocate the extra eight to :-). It occurs to me that Letterman might call the rest of my collection "Top N-18 reasons to avoid desert islands like the plague." As the old saying goes, If I can't take it with me I won't go. I've never dealt in videos before, but if I did I'd probably prioritize _Return of the Secaucus Seven_ and any available compendium of golden moments from _World News Now_. Back on dry land, I sent the Happy FAQ within the hour to Stuart Rosenberg at WBEZ. We shall see whether anything comes of it. Stopped into Music Plus yesterday (though the plus is a bit of a misnomer since Blockbuster bought them and changed the to Music Only) to buy the latest Sinatras disc, and I thought I'd look for Happy. Sure enough, right there in the R's was Warpaint. The odd thing was that while all the other R tabs had things starting with R on them, this one actually said Warpaint. The woman working me who helped me find it didn't seem to care though. Neal ======================================================================== From: r.lovejoy1@genie.geis.com Date: Sat, 10 Jul 93 02:59:00 BST Subject: Early albums and more My parents bought me a phonograph and the Original Broadway Cast album of "L'il Abner" when I was five, so I guess that was my first album. (sigh). That was the year of the electric train, though...The first album I actually bought on my own was "The Witch Doctor" by David Seville. My first 45 was "Russian Bandstand" by Spencer and Spencer. I have never been normal. (note: Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, "We Are Normal And We Want Our Freedom"). Some talk of Bass has surfaced and my ears have parasites. My speakers have great woofers, but do not overpower you with bass; just when there is a great low note, it's There! I certainly love the instrument. For some incredible bass playing, catch Kevin's Rickenbacker flow in "I Say". The lilt of the bass line is wonderful. Regarding Fellini and Joyce: I admire the talents of both, but we must give the James Joyce Writing Guild Crown to Vickie, whose recent free- flowing sentence managed to flow into subconcious depths. Lovely weather we're having. You know, I bet they didn't have this kind of weather before they invented the bow and arrow. This coming week I have some time off. I hope to make a Happy Sampler tape for some friends, a Radio Show Music only tape for dbx, my contribution to the Birthday Project, and who knows what else? For the Birthday Project I've been considering sending something from an old demo I made years ago, or maybe some Gentle Giant. Tough decision. Anyone else posting their ideas? See you all soon! My package of the six CDs came with "Warpaint" signed by Happy, > and the postpak addressed by Kevin, who signed the customs declaration. > Nothing like hands-on service! Ha! I can beat that! :-) When my lastest batch from AG arrived, a long strand of hair turned up on my table immediately after unpacking... The color matches Happy's hair on the Equipoise cover (as far as you can tell from a single strand), the package was sent off by Happy (judging from the writing) and nobody else with sufficiently long hair had been around... How's that for collectibles? ;-) About the Desert Island Disks: Don't know which ten CDs I'd choose, but I recently realized that Enya's "Watermark" would be an absolutely must, just for it's sanity preserving effects. Tangerine Dreams' "Tyger" would probably fall into the same category... Of course, "Watermark" has the disadvantage that it might drive you into the water on a really bad day... Kiri put Diamanda Galas' "Plague Mass" on her DIDs list; while I'll agree that it's a great CD and I `like' to listen to it occasionally, I'm also fairly certain I wouldn't want to share a desert island with that one... ;-) Somebody asked about the Sweet. While I do not have any of their albums (I swear! :-)), I think they could be found here in Denmark, the Sweet was pretty popular some 15? years ago... Finally, Alan write about Flairck: > [...] and they also did a cover of "the > blacksmith" (the same one Loreena McKennitt sings) but it sounds very > different!! I didn't recognize it until I heard "Strange news has come to > town"... Hmm, Eddi Reader does a version of "The Blacksmith" on "Mirmama"... Gad, what a brilliant > collection of music... made more poignant by the fact that none of it was > ever intended for other ears to hear. Crikey. I loved this post. Thank you Meredith. Besides the fact that you like VI so much, it's nice to hear when someone else is moved to listen to the album (*any* of Happy's albums, but especially the early ones) over and over again. I've done that so often, I'd just pick an album and obsess on it for a while, then go to another one. The thing that always holds true for me is that I never, *ever* get tired of Happy's music, no matter how many times I've listened to whatever it is I'm listening to. Talking about the early albums specifically, the truly amazing thing about it is that the music is so....um...."simple"....on the surface....yet, none of the albums, none of the songs have ever sounded anything but fresh and wonderful. The songs are well-loved friends to me. And you're right, to think that Happy was recording these song just to get them onto tape and to learn the equipment at Cathedral, with no idea that they...that she... that we... wow... > Anthony brought up the "Bass Note Of Doom" from "Cohabitants"- well, I've > discovered a sequence of them in "I'm Not Awake, I'm Not Asleep". With my > new stereo I can pick up on things like this, and my chair was vibrating > through the whole thing. That's such a subtle and subversive song. I paid little attention to it for the longest time, then one night I played it on my show and it snuck up on me and I listened closely and it went "I'm heeeeerrre" and I went "oh my god!" and that kind of thing happened *all the time* with Happy's music! There are *so* many songs to discover. There are *so* many songs to re-discover. Happy's albums are....it's like wandering around and stumbling over something and you go "what's that?" and you look and it's -yay!- a suprise! A treat! Happy's albums are bags of goodies and jewels and sweets, a bottomless bag, every one, for all time. > This is by far my favorite Happy album, as I've said > before. It's just too cool for words.
