It's after midnight and I *still* have to record my Chicago show for tomorrow night. At least it will be easy, I'll focus on Victoria Williams & Sweet Relief. I got home late, after shopping at Tower and a used record store called Dr. Wax, and then I spent a lot of time writing that Sweet Relief piece. Anyway, I'll have to read Ecto & e-mail tomorrow night. One of the things I picked up at Dr. Wax was an album by Juliana Raye. Has anyone heard of her or mentioned her before? It's uneven, so I don't know if I'd recommend it at full price, but some songs are pretty darn good. I'll have to listen to it all the way through, and some more. I also picked up (used) Clannad's "Banba" and I don't think I like it all that much. (I put it that way though, because I'm usually willing to give an album like this more than one listen before I decide.) I also bought (used) the latest Crash Vegas album "Stone" but I haven't listened to it yet. I'll probably be playing these things on next week's show. I looked for the Lisa Germano album (new) and didn't find it. Tower had a space for her, but it was empty. I didn't look for it used, but I probably should have. Though, I *know* I'll love it and I'd rather support Lisa by buying a new copy. There's a short, but good, article about Lisa in the latest Pulse magazine, which is probably why they were sold out on the album. Tower has been fairly on the ball. The last time I was there they had 1 copy of Vol. II, one copy of Warpaint and 5 Rearmaments. Tonight they had 3 copies of Ecto, 2 copies of Equipoise and 4 copies of Rearmament! I wonder who bought the VII, WP & Rearmament. ('twernt me jack!) I *almost* bought the Cranberries' album. I heard a song from it the other day (I think it was called "Pretty"?) and I liked it a lot. For those in the know, is the rest of the album as good? Does she sing on all the tracks? (I loved her voice!) Has anyone seen a video by them yet? I ask because what I saw (when I heard them) was very strange and I doubt that it was the official video. I was flipping channels and for some reason stopped on ESPN, the sports channel, and this guy was showing "videos" but...I don't know...a song started and it was identified as being the Cranberries, but the "video" was people water skiing! I get the feeling that this guy just put music to different sports, rather than play the actual video. Can anyone confirm? SIG calls...see y'all tomorrow night. I cannot believe that anyone continues to live there in the summer. At night it was 79 degrees (Fahrenheit) with 60% humidity. During the day it was even more unbearable. However, I spent much of my visit in Valerie's air-conditioned house, visiting with Valerie, Kiri, and Courtney. Kiri and Courtney were overjoyed to have an excuse to get out of going to their normally boring family 4th of July, umm, celebrations. We all had a great time and everybody had a chance to call everyone a bitch at some point (but not in a bad way). How did I do in the race? I was happy with my time, although the competition was such that I ended up being 47th out of about 55 in my division. Valerie and Courtney both extend their greetings to everyone on Ecto. I believe that both said they'll be connected soon. Valerie did play her tape of "Moments of Pleasure" from the Aspel show for all of us (thanks, Meth!) and also her tape of what she called "The Grail", or the Kate Bush version of the _Brazil_ theme. Valerie was amazed to find out that it is now available on a soundtrack album. She couldn't reveal how she got it or from whom. Today I got back _Warpaint_ and _Equipoise_ from a friend at work. She appears to be absolutely enthralled with Happy. I will be giving her the chance to listen to the 1st4 after she gets back from a two-week vacation. Y'know, it's getting sort of hard to tell brni and woj apart, given that both tend not to use their shift keys. I thought woj was the one giving us the Battle Hymn of the Slinky. Dave Barry fans should find his most recent column interesting. I'm glad I went looking for it at nearly midnight last night. (SpaceNews, July 5, 1993) * SETI NEWS * ============= A search for aliens in outer space has detected 164 mysterious radio signals that must be studied to learn if they come from natural causes or from E.T. trying to phone Earth, scientists reported on June 2, 1993. "At this point, we have no concrete evidence for signals from intelligent aliens. We have some possibilities we're going to investigate further," said Stuart Bowyer, head of the search and an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley. Detection of the 164 unexplained radio signals since the latest, most sophisticated phase of the $400,000 search started 14 months ago was announced during the American Astronomical Society's annual meeting. "If one of these candidate signals is really a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization, it's likely we will be able to confirm it within a year," said researcher Dan Werthimer. "But it's very unlikely that any of these candidates are really from extraterrestrials. It's much more likely that they are human-made interference or natural noise sources." Since the 1960s, dozens of searches have been conducted for radio signals leaking into space from broadcasts or radar used by any advanced societies that might exist on distant worlds. Bowyer and Werthimer said the UC-Berkeley search, which uses a 1,000 foot wide radio telescope antenna dish in Puerto Rico, is more powerful and sensitive than any other, analyzing 30 trillion signals in the last 14 months alone. A $100 million, 10-year search by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration eventually will be more powerful once it is running full time and with more advanced equipment. That search started Columbus Day, using antennas in Puerto Rico and California. Several other searches for radio signals from intelligent alien societies also have detected radio signals that couldn't immediately be explained. But all of them either were never heard again or were found to be caused by natural or human sources. Werthimer said some of the yet-unexplained signals have come from the same locations in the sky a month or more after they were first detected. "Our most interesting candidates are signals that are still there when the telescope comes back to a particular spot," he said. That finding is "very interesting" because a radio signal that appears fixed over time "has to be from beyond our solar system," although it could be created naturally, said Edward Olsen, a scientist working on NASA's search at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. But Werthimer said some such signals may come from within the solar system, generated by two sources that appear in the same part of the sky. They had SGI machines there (those displays of the weather information were realtime images -- well, at the very least, realtime images on tape :-) ), but they had Macintosh keyboards. If it were _raw_ Unix, we'd have seen some really fast awk/sed/greping. Oops, sorry, saw Unix mentioned. :-) To make this post have a little bit of nongeekery in it, I just splurged on CDs yesterday (didn't buy *one* CD last weekend; I was so proud of myself I negated any possible savings I could have accrued). U2's Zooropa is *WEIRD*. If anyone tells you it's highly experimental, believe them. It didn't yank me out of my socks like Acthung Baby did. After one listen, I think my favorite song is the last one -- the one with Johnny Cash (it's OK, though; he wears all black). I also got Peter Gabriel's Passion, which I LIKE. Jeffy accused me of being a fake Gabriel completist at the concert ; I still need to find Birdie. Annnnd, with all the talk of Cyndi Lauper, I got her True Colors CD (haven't had a chance to listen to it yet). (I know, I know, this isn't a *splurge* yet... Can anyone tell me something/ anything about the band? Said friend also wants to try to order the Magnetic Fields album. woj, could you grace me with the catalog number please? Mike: you *claimed* to be a completist 'cause you own all 3 PG albums, Security, So, and Us (and don't you have the Shaking the Tree compilation on order?) whereas I'm missing PGCD2. But a *real* completist would have at least recoginzed every song played at the concert (I'll admit that I had trouble figuring out what "Slow Marimbas" was...thanks, Angelos). It's not my fauilt you didn't know about _Passion_ or _Birdy_ (note correct spelling). And come to think of it, you don't have _Plays Live_, do you? We'll only briefly mention the fact that you don't yet own any Gabriel-era Genesis. ;-) But hey, _Trick of the Tail_ is a step in the right direction. I heard the Sarah Brightman album, _Dive_. "Interesting." Or something. She has a neat voice when she's not trying to make it sounds to impassioned. Very KaTe-like at times, though nothing like the Hapster's when she's doing what I refer to as "That Kooky KaTe Thang." (said thang really shows up on HR5). It's obvious that Brightman wanted to be influenced by both KaTe and Enya. Pity she doesn't have the talent of either. Overall, though, it's a quite good album, with one very serious flaw: a *wretched* track called "Johnny Wanna Live" which was co- written by Monsieur Cretu of Enigma fame. It's a peta-esque ditty with the most trite, contrived, predictable, and over-all stupid lyrics imaginable. Sarah Brightman's vocal interpretation is a laugh, and the fact that she chose to even sing this song and put it on the album does not bode well for her level of intelligence. To find out out how a song with basically the same theme should sound, check out Sarah McLachlan's "Shelter" from _Solace_. My friends and I spent the entire weekend making fun of "Johnny Wanna Live" and I imagine the jokes will continue to fly for quite a while. Despite all that, I'm still going to recommend the album. It's got some really neat stuff, and I'm particularly found of the first single, "Captain Nemo." At least, I think that's the first single. I was sorry to miss the Cranberries when they came through town, opening for The The. But with ticket prices they way they are, there was just no way I could see the show (I'm also rather fond of The The). Thus I was very pleased to find out that the Cranberries will be back in town on July 21 (that's a Wednesday, Mike...make your plans now) at the 9:30 club for a mere $5. I've also heard that Ingrid Karklins will be playing somewhere in the area, but I'm not sure where/when/howmuch yet. And I guess that's all for now... Jeff |Jeffrey C. I always thought that this whole scene was meant to be a running joke. If we assume (correctly, I think) that _nobody_ knows Unix, then the 12-year-old's line about knowing Unix begins our journey into absurdity. Next, we see a screen that doesn't look like a Unix implementation at all, the kid does some nonsensical things with the mouse, and suddenly the desired result occurrs. I found this to be extremely clever, and extremely funny.
