Thanks to Angelos, I now have in my sweaty little palms a copy of the Philly concert and sundry other Happyphernalia. I shall never know, like it or lump it, what was in the rest of the show. But if they really wanted to observe the day with panace, they would have done the weather and sports score segments for at least some of the half-hours to the accompaniment of such seasonally appropriate music as that bit of buried treasure from the golden age of folk music, Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers' "When The War Breaks Out In Mexico I'll be Heading Up to Montreal," or Geddy Lee's contributed musical interlude in one of Moranis and Thomas' Bob and Doug sketches: "Take off/To the great white north/Take off/It's a beauty way to go...." :-) Or at the very least, they could be sure to display the redoubtable Cliche Meter as they played "Canadian Sunset" or Jeanette McDonald's "Indian Love Call." My film picks for the long weekend: _Map of the Human Heart_ and _Three of Hearts_. Not a dinosaur or terminator to be found among them :-) Happy birthday to Court, and happy remaining Canada Day, if any, to all. I'm back in Boston after a brief hop across the continent to find a place to stay in sunny/beautiful/hospitable (thanx Dave & Emily!!) Berkeley. The success of the trip is still up in the air in terms of housing (I now know what a renter's market is :)), but some time inbetween the 10 miles of walking a day I managed to have a wonderful time (again thanx to D&E), and buy CDs. I guess the most interesting ones were a Victoria Williams promo-sampler from Shake the Statue, and Pulnoc, a Czech band (formerly Plastic People), who sound great but sing in Czech :(, and 'You must be certain of the devil' by Diamanda Galas, which makes 'the singer' sound like lounge music. Thanks to Vickie and Chris for playing 'Moments of pleasure' for me over the phone during my all too brief (35 minutes in total) stay in Chicago (cool airport). And last but not least, thanks to Happy for mailing me the CD5. [Brief interruption: YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! I got the apartment! :-) :-) The one in Rockridge, Dave. YAY!!! again!] Back to ecto-worthy news. I will agree with the consensus that the cover photo isn't very flattering, but I have one more problem with it, which is the use of HR without any identification of Happy Rhodes on it. If this was to be released it should include her name up front, because otherwise the band HR could sue Happy for inadvertently confusing HR fans ;-) The CD in itself is way cool. I like the changes she made from the radio tour shows, and the added guitar in SOS is also great! And the Hapster's note was the highlight, she's such a wonderfully cool/funny person... That's about all! Good luck to Beth with her house hunting! And let me embarrass Dave by saying that his open mike performance, and the impromptu industrial trance dance track he was working on were both great!!! Now let me go back to the trees, errr to my bed to realize why a red eye is called a red eye :-) Oh, Bob L., thanks for the info. I will call Suzanne before I go to Greece. Angelos ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 1 Jul 93 21:44:06 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: The Kate Thang Hello! Due to semi-sorta-popular demand from alienated gaffians, here's what I wrote. Apologies to those who've already seen it (though I did try to put back in the "the"s I missed) and to those who aren't much interested. This was kinda in response to two things. First, various and sundry people saying they didn't like Kate's new song and second, a trend that bothers me to no end, that some people who don't like more recent Kate outputtage (actually starting in 1989 with the release of _The Sensual World_) feel the burning desire to say "blah blah (whichever song they're talking about) isn't the Kate (I/we) know and love." Now, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people who don't like something that I like, and I also understand the basic concept that if someone only likes *one* of Kate's particular styles, that's what they love and they don't care for things that deviate from what they love. Kate has so many different songs in so many different styles that I just feel sad when someone words the phrase "that's not the Kate *I* know and love" because I feel they're missing out on a lot of great Kate. But that's not my problem and I really don't care what people like or don't like. I only know what *I* like and *I* like...love...nearly everything by Kate. I would have gone ballistic if this most recent guy had worded it (as some have in the past) "that's not the Kate *we* know and love." He didn't, so I didn't address him directly. I still wanted to say *something* though, and this was the result. This does refer mostly to Kate's lyrics rather than her music or voice, btw. From: vickie@pilot.njin.net (Vickie Mapes) Newsgroups: rec.music.gaffa Subject: This wonderful song... ..is beautiful, simple, and moving. The Kate everybody knows. Kate the artist. Kate the musician. Kate the lyricist. Kate the poet. Kate the experimenter. Kate the storyteller. Kate the trouper. Kate the survivor. The innocent Kate. The cynical Kate. The beautiful Kate. The bad-hair-day Kate. The Kate who introduced a song of hers by saying "yeah, 'ere it is" and the Kate who presented her songs as a 3-act "play" and the Kate who thinks we're all mad and the Kate who repeats herself endlessly and the Kate who would really rather not say anything at all about her songs and the Kate who loves her family and friends and Del and unusual musical instruments and her garden and her cats and her privacy. Lots and lots of Kates. The Kate who gave us 6 albums and a bunch of b-sides and remixes and who is about to give us another album. So many Kates. So little time...
