I thought the Fleetwood Mac song was the real thing too, not a house band. Good, because the smaltzy house band "inspirational" music sucked very largely. Other random thoughts: Gore's speech was better than Clinton's (But then, Al Gore is a minor political hero of mine) If the Democrats win (oh please God) and if Hillary will then be the First Lady, will that make Tipper the Vice Lady? (oh no, please God) (ok, I actually like Hillary and Tipper, and I got really sick of jokes about them, but I just made that one up and had to share it. So sue my hypocritical ass :-) ((Well, I like Tipper, I *hate* the PMRC though)) Martin, all politicians aren't corrupt, just a lot of them. They're called Republicans :-) (No, I'm not a Democrat, I'm an independent (small "i" intentional) but I think the Democrats in general and this ticket in particular seem to have more integrity and honesty than most high level Republicans I know about. Nothing against everyday, ordinary, walking-around, working-Joe Republicans. My dad's one, and I love him dearly, though we *never* talk politics because we'd end up fighting. He still hasn't forgiven me for putting the Carter/Mondale bumper sticker on the car that he co-signed for me :-). That's a joke, of course he's forgiven me, though it really did piss him off at the time. Still, we never talk politics or religion. His Democratic-voting, atheist daughter is a mystery to him. We love each other, get along fine, and continue thinking the other is simply "misguided." :-) How about that Perot huh? I understand his supporters feeling disappointed and upset, but people are being way too harsh on the guy. Someone actually said "He lied to us, he led us on, he betrayed us" blah blah blah. How silly. Really, politicians pull out of campaigns all the time. It's a fact of life and at least Perot dropped out before the campaign really got into high gear. He's a *businessman* and conducted himself as such. The same attributes that cultivated supporters, got him into trouble with them. I wouldn't have voted for him, but it *would* have been interesting to see what would have happened if he had won. I wasn't much of a Clinton supporter until he chose Gore as his running mate (then I thought "this guy's *smart*) so I might possibly have voted for Perot after all, even though some of his attitudes really bothered me ("Gays in the military? Unrealistic" really pissed me off.) Oh well, he really stirred things up, which is a good thing in itself. Hmmm, enough politics, which really aren't discussed too much on Ecto anyway. I'm going to start transcribing the Helen Light interview.... From the very well-known (she told me about _The Handmaid's Tale_) to the very, very, *very* obscure. Most of her lyrics are inspired by books. Fans could literally go *crazy* trying to figure out all the references. I'm in Psycho-la-la-Land because I just got the CD in the mail. I've had it on shuffle repeat for 2 hours now. It's fantastic!!! I was already familiar with some of the songs, all the later songs on FMC #6 are on the CD, but there are some new ones too that are just as good. I would like this CD even if I had never heard of the band, so, believe me, I'm not being friend-o-centric. The album is called _Inertia_ and there are 11 songs on it. 1) VHVH 2) Unbridled 3) Secret Song 4) >et tu< 5) Syntax of the Skin 6) occultum fiat manifestum 7) Honour 8) Bombs Away 9) Substance D 10) Prometheus 11) Inquisition A card came with the CD announcing their concert in Chicago. They're playing Saturday, August 1st at the Beat Kitchen. The card gives 2 phone numbers you can call. Here's what the card says: "Pester your local alternative radio station to play a cut from _intertia_! Now you can find out where we're playing and, generally, what's new by calling 1-900-740-7760 and entering 3040. And if you can't find _intertia_ in your local record store you can order it by calling 1-800-432-7639. (Both services are VISA/MC only.) Support independents! Psychowelders, 3815 Walnut #S, Kansas City, MO 64111 or Imaginary Music, PO Box 10481, Kansas City, MO 64111 _intertia_ available on CD or cassette." I can tell you that not only does the CD sound great, it *looks* great too!! Rhondda is responsible for the artwork layout. The cover is is card by itself and is a photograh (I mean, it actually says "Paper by Kodak" on the back) from The Alchemical Series entitled #2 "...but the kitchen sink" which I don't know anything about but it looks really cool! Then there's a separate insert that's to die for, with all the lyrics and credits. (yeah, my name's in there, though I have to give her a hard time because she spelled my name "Vicki" :-). Chris is in there too!) They must have spent a fortune on these CDs (and yes, they payed for it all themselves. A truly independent operation. Sorta like someone else we all know and love....) and I highly recommend it. Now, I must say that the Psychowelders won't appeal to everyone. To paraphrase woj, in-your-face rock with metaphysical lyrics and female vocals only. I happen to think that the "rock" is more interesting than a big portion of what's out there currently. The band's influences range from Siouxsie to the Cocteau Twins and lots of others in between, all very good influences. You'll hear the flavor of the influences, but they are not copycats at all. Rhondda has an interesting voice, and though she has a very limited range, they write the songs to fit her voice and they work well with it. The band has been together for *years* and it shows. They are very tight and comfortable. They just keep getting better and better and I think/hope they will soon break out of the local Kansas City scene and get some wider recognition. I really can picture the day when I'll see a Psychowelders video on MTV, and then I'll be yelling in excitment "WOW! RHONDDA USED TO BE MY DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR!!" What a day that will be! woj, when you get the CD, please write a review, you're much better at that than I am and you can describe them much better than I can. Thanks! Now, I really *will* start transcribing the Helen Light interview... Sorry, brain failure. It was someone called Willie Nile. I have indeed heard of Willie Nelson (not that I'm old enough to be familiar with his music of course :-). I guess I just typed the wrong name 'cos it sounded familiar. Whether they get Tori for the concert remains to be seen. Happy and 10,000 Maniacs seems pretty definite though. -Anthony P.S. I was going to reply to someone who posted about Buffy Sainte-Marie appearing on Sesame Street, but I seem to have lost the relevant digest and also can't remember who it was. Anyway thanks for the info which was interesting. Not that I ever really got to see Sesame Street as a child, since it was never really broadcast regularly in England. Mind you we did have The Magic Roundabout which more than compensated. I suspect that lack of The Magic Roundabout accounts for many of the problems in modern American society. -Anthony ======================================================================== Subject: ecto archaeology #? I really can't tell which one (including Warpaint) I like most. Usually the one that's just playing ;). Same with the songs. My current favourite is "If so", but ask me again next week. Several people mentioned how surprised they were by the high sound quality. I must say, I wasn't surprised at all. Maybe I don't expext anything that Happy does to be less than perfect ... :) But then, I mean, though the early stuff was just Happy and her ideas and a guitar, it was done in a studio and not in her living room! Some impressions of recommendations from the list and other music: Deborah Blando Saw her on MTV once. Whatta yawn. Just a Madonna wannabe, and IMHO Madonna is a waste of air time. Martin said on Feb 6th: >A recommendation from an ectophile is almost always all I need to >check out whatever artistic driftwood you people collect. And oh >what beautiful driftwood. Things like this change the directions >of people's lives. You've got a point there. I wouldn't go as far as saying it changed my life, but definitely it broadened my (our) tastes a lot! Bel Canto was recommended by Rodney, Vickie and Greg. Later we found out Alan loves them a lot too. Klaus got "Shimmering warm and bright" right afterwards and we love it so much. Just the kind of stuff I always wanted to hear but we would have missed for sure if it weren't for you. Diamanda Galas is a different question. Klaus said in January: >But I do have big problems with Diamanda Galas' >"you must be certain of the devil". MY only problem is he still tries to get a taste for it. I listened to it once and I'm absolutely sure I can't stand it. Screaming like that without having just broken your leg or having been poisoned or so is in my view pointless noise and has nothing to do with music. Angelos said on april 16th: >c) Diamanda Galas - The Singer. >I wrote about this in .gaffa the day after I bought it. I was >shocked by it. (...) I wasn't shocked, just turned off. I think the following is from Angelos message too, if it's somebody's elses text, I apologize, to both. >I even tried to sell it, but decided that $5 was a ripoff, and >kept it. Well it turns out that I ended up liking it. Chilling, >disturbing, angry, yet heartfelt. I cannot imagine anybody else >singing like she does. She has an incredible range. She can >sustain a very deep voice, but her screams are really haunting. >She reminds me of a satanic bluesy Lene Lovich gone amok. And >that's meant as a compliment. That made me think. I don't want to be too personal, but I guess to appreciate her you must in a way feel basically unhappy, so it feels good (?) to have someone scream in your place. I may be wrong, but if I'm right, I hope you feel better now, Angelos :) But at least it seems I'm in good company with my view of her "music". Woj on apr 17th: >i can only apprecaite her technically. her voice does little for >me, but i can admire what she does with it. i guess i just don't >enjoy it that much. sometimes i think she's in it for the shock >more than anything else and that usually turns me off.
