Glad you had a good day Mitch. People rarely talk about what they actually did on their birthdays. I'm still waiting with baited breath to find out if Alan Sodoma celebrated his birthday at the Albany concert. Alan? Btw, Toni Childs was not on David Letterman last week, it was a repeat of an old show and his announcement of who would be on the next night was out-of-date. However, they show the repeats in order so this past Monday night, she *was* on (along with Katarina Witt-yay!) so I got it on tape. It was interesting to see her. I have and love both of her albums, but this is the first time I've ever "seen" her, other than the photos on the albums. So, was Karen Finley on Dennis Miller? I was recording my show and didn't watch. Btw, for woj, you'll never guess who was on The Tonight Show (w/ Jay Leno) while you were in Spain. Since it would take millions of bytes and many months of guessing before you probably still wouldn't get it, I'll tell you. Blue Man Group!! I'm not making this up. They were wonderful, and after the performance, Jay walked out and shook their paint and marshmello covered hands and said to the audience, "This is *not* your father's Tonight Show" which was pretty much on the mark! The next week he mentioned them again and said that they'd gotten lots of "positive response." Yeah! I have a couple of stories I will write up this weekend, but I wanted to mention 2 things now. First, my friend Charley (who went to Philly with the lady who drove her boyfriend's multi-tens of thousands of dollars worth of Mercedes) came over and brought me a present. At Philly, he sat next to a woman who had heard Happy on WXPN and absolutely fell in love. She was joyous to sit next to someone who had been a fan for a long time and knew all kinds of things about Happy. They've kept in touch and she's sent him things like the Inquirer article. Well, the other day she sent him a dub of the WXPN/Helen Light interview and he brought it over. Listening to it, I was *amazed* no one said anything at all about this interview, other than that it aired, and maybe someone (probably Bob) said that it was good. I don't really remember the posts concerning the interview, I remember more about the In-Store mentions. Well, this interview is *WONDERFUL*!!!!!!! This weekend I am going to transcribe it. When I get the Echoes interview from Mike Mendelson, I can make up this Happy Misc. Pt. 2 tape I've been talking about and get it to Doug, hopefully ASAP. You are going to *love* this interview!! a) Bob, I know you're having a lot of problems, so don't worry about sending me a dub of the interview. I might want one later, because this one was dubbed on very low quality tape and yours might sound a little better. But it's not bad, so it will do for now. I hope your wife is feeling a bit better. b) Mike, please call me. I would love to get a copy of your Echoes interview before/by this weekend. Chris is in Kansas City and it will be a perfect time to make up the tape. Thanks in advance. Second, Charley also brought over a new CD he had picked up at Reckless Records used. It's by a woman named Ingrid Karklins and the album is called _A Darker Passion_. It's fantastic!! Has anyone ever heard of this woman? I'll write more about it later, but a quick description is Marta Sebestyen crossed with Laurie Anderson! Apparently, it is the belief among surfers that every ninth wave is "the" wave, and that every ninth, ninth wave is even moreso.....surfers! My question (I'll save you all the trouble of asking this) is this: When does one start counting? Hmmmmmmm? It's funny how simple questions can get out of hand (uh-oh, another tangent) For instance, I ask about "the [n] wonders of the [adjective] world" and talk of this begins to dominate......to quote an animated moose; "Don't know m' own strength!". I have to wonder if the seemingly contextless posts about combining forms of the word(s) pedantic/pedantery etc. relate to these pursuits....:) :) :) .....uhhhhhh, I thought I was going somewhere with all this, but I guess not....nevermind. Anyway, the "napkin/cat/tape thing" was at a barbecue I wrote about early this year. We wrapped the host's cat around the torso with a large paper napkin, and then secured the napkin with sticky-tape wrapped around the napkin, firm but not too tight. The cat then seemed to lose its ability to walk straight... she kept falling over sideways and trying to stand up, although nothing was physically preventing her from walking. As soon as the tape was removed, though, she seemed fine...stalked off into the crowd like nothing had happened. Aparently this is a well-known phenonemon, although some ecto members said they'd tried it and it hadn't worked. No, I don't know if the cat had been RUTS(tm). :) Chris S. again: > On an only (barely) tangentially (adverbally, apparently) related > note, can anyone name the seven wonders of the ancient world? The eigth wonder! What an ad campaign!!:) ] Whatever, the next album is called, I think we can safely assume it will be the *sixth* wonder of the ecto world. :) One step down from such exalted imaginings (ah), I should mention an amusing wave of public interest sweeping Australia over our brand new $5 note. The new note is much smaller than the old one, made of some kind of plastic material, and, despite heated recent debate over Australia becoming a republic, features a picture of the queen (of England). The note also sports funky things like see-through bits and raised surfaces on parts of the pictures and the numbers, for the blind. Within a day of the new note's release, someone discovered the picture of the queen could, with a bit of elbow grease, be rubbed off the note! (Bit like Scatch'n'Match lotto cards!) Other people discovered that applying heat to the note could warp it in funny ways. This morning I was listening to JJJ, our national cool-music network, and on the breakfast show they were taking calls on novel ways to deface the new fiver... there were many calls indeed.. one guy described how he boiled a note in hot oil over the stove and shrank it down to a perfect half-size replica.. :) he he.. The latest topic of conversation is to whip out your defaced note and discuss the likelyhood of passing it off to a shopkeeper. :) As Alexei Sayle says, "It's a funny old world." On that subject, I saw tonight on the news some of the huge political rallies and beat-ups for the U.S. presidential candidates... wow... almost totally beyond belief.. I don't know how you guys see it, but the way it gets reported, the whole election thing just seems so corrupt. One more thing, I still haven't found a good map of the world to plot the ecto distribution on... perhaps Doug, the weatherman?... now that you're back an' all. Anyone else? OK, I lied.. two more things... Another project I'm engaging in is digitising sound samples from happy's CD's, for ultimate inclusion at the archives. So far only Warpaint, but the 1st4 too as soon as my CDs arrive. Anyone else interested in these? Any "must-have" snippets people want? Any preferences as to format? (They will be Macintosh sounds unless there's overwhelming preference for Sun sounds or something.) One I like particularly like is the opening few phrases from Phobos, you can loop it and bliss out on it for ages... Anyway... back to sleep. (Actually, I'm in bed already as I write this... I just got my new Mac Powerbook this week and I'm "comin' to ya cordless". Regarding the thread on the seven wonders, etc., a couple of completely tangential comments. The now disbanded band Eighth Wonder pops into my mind; not the best music I ever heard, but not the worst either. Arguably the best thing about them, in retrospect, was that they were fronted by Patsy Kensit, whose performances I enjoyed in _Absolute Beginners_, _Lethal Weapon 2_, and _Twenty-One_. I am also reminded of the existence of a product line called Natural Wonders, which I have read is Revlon's low-end line of cosmetics aimed at adolescent female teeny-boppers (redundancy?). Just thought I'd throw all that gratuitously into the discussion :-). Regarding Martin's comment that the Australian press portrays U.S. presi- dential politics as corrupt: Many Americans feel the same way (about presiden- tial politics, not the Australian press). By an ironic coincidence, it has just been reported that Ross Perot has dropped out of the race. He says he did it to prevent the election from going to the House of Representatives should no candidate gain a majority in the Electoral College (proving once again that the (U.S. political system can be as Byzantine as any in the world). One caller to the station, on the other hand, says he thinks Bush has some kind of embarrass- ing information on Perot, whose Illinois campaign chairman has now endorsed Clinton. I think it was a simple matter of his organization beginning to fall apart for whatever reason, wirth the loss of one of his campaign managers and his advertising agency. Be all that as it may, yesterday's sessions at the convention were good ones for the indirect politics-music interface, what with the major addressed delivered by Cuomo, who lives in the same city as Happy, and by Brown, whose ex-girlfriend Linda Ronstadt's birthday it was. On the other hand, had I known Karen Finley was on Dennis Miller, I would have watched it instead of the extended coverage of the political stuff; I was even awake during most of that time period, timeshifting Studs Terkel's show on Woody Guthrie. (May I join with Vickie in expressing curiosity about what transpired, if anything.) As I write this, I am listening to the new album _Labyrinth_, by Kerri Anderson, which was one of a number I picked up on sale at Sound Warehouse the other day. On the whole, it's pretty good, a mix of rock and acoustic; I don't know if y'all would like all of it, but there's a good chance you'd like some of it at least. My parting shot will be a response to Martin's parting shot in his last post as of this writing: It just goes to prove that this kind of writing requires thought, as evidenced by the fact that I couldn't do it in my sleep. :-) Mitch ======================================================================== Date: 16-JUL-1992 22:42:51.82 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Many many replies to many many things Hi! What you said about her voice and Natalie Merchant's, though I never would have thought of it myself, is true, now I think of it... I've always had it in mind to get some of Ste. Hey- my collection includes BowWowWow, Kitaro, Mozart, and Culture Club, and that's not including the collection of Medieval and Renaissance music, spanning the 9th through 16th centuries. I'm sure many of the folks around here wouldn't especially enjoy some of that. But hey- different strokes, and all that... Alan inquires: }I have a question: What is all this significance of the 7th, 8th }and 9th waves? I don't know about the 8th, but I alternately hear the 7th and 9th waves referred to as the biggest ones in the cycle. Go to the beach sometime and check it out, it's pretty much true- the ninth wave does lap up (or crash onto) the shore higher than the others, it has everything to do with wave-frequency modulation or something technical like that (don't ask me, I've only got a literature degree :). The Tennyson line, from "The Holy Grail", reads as follows: Wave after wave, each mightier than the last 'Til last, a ninth one, gathering half the deep And full of voices, slowly rose and plunged Roaring, and all the wave was in a flame The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are: 1) The Pyramids of Egypt 2) The Hanging Gardens of Babylon 3) The Colossus of Rhodes 4) The Statue of Athena in Athens 5) The Statue of Diana at Ephesus 6) The Pharos (Lighthouse) of Alexandria and either 7) The Sphinx or 7) The Mausoleum (Tomb built by the King of Mausos for his wife, it was the Taj Mahal of the ancient world).
