I have just received my last installment of Happy CD's in the mail yesterday--V2 and Rearmament. I'm really wondering why I didn't order the tapes much sooner. I really loved Warpaint when I first got it over a year ago, and had a nagging inclination to buy the tapes but the idea of buying music on such a fragile medium put me off I guess. I've been poking around in the ecto archives, and there are a few questions I'd like to ask which I hope don't come up too often. The archives are so big I've only read bits and pieces... First, I'm curious about the napkin/cat/tape thing. Should I try a paper or a cloth napkin? Second, does anybody know how sales of Warpaint are doing now? What the total sales are, what pressing we're at? Are H&K's promotional efforts winding down now in anticipation of the new album? Third, how much exposure has Happy got in the *non-net* Kate Bush fan clubs? Is Homeground a regular fanzine? Was there a Happy article in Homeground? I'm wondering because I want to know if any of the local hard-core Kate fans will have already heard of Happy. My introduction to LA was, > on the advice of the guy-at-record-world, Big Science, which...as recent and more about LA. This makes me just want to make one point, and please, I respect your tastes in music, and it's 100% ok for you all to like what you like, ... but (you knew that was coming, right?) I feel a bit out of place reading this mailing list sometimes because a lot of the music referred to (Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, etc.) is stuff that I don't like, for one reason or another. So if there is anybody else out there in the same boat as me, don't assume that you won't like Happy because of this! I have found for quite some time now that whether I like music seems to have little to do with its genre. For example, some favourites that immediately come to mind are XTC, kdlang, Daniel Amos, Happy and KT (of course!), Jane Siberry, Throwing Muses, Skinny Puppy. Other groups with even a very `similar' sound to some of these, I may or may not like. And normally Country music holds no appeal for me at all, except if it's kdlang or Daniel Amos (only their first two albums were country, btw, the rest are alternative pop type music). I think it's just sometimes you are on the same wavelength as an artist and sometimes you're not. It's almost a complete hit and miss for me. I have to listen to music for a while before I really know if I like it or not. So what do *you* think? I think I should get back to work.... - Tim ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Re: Cats, Napkins, Tori, Laurie, and musical genres Date: Tue, 14 Jul 92 15:56:02 EDT Tim writes: >First, I'm curious about the napkin/cat/tape thing. So if there is anybody else out there in the same boat as > me, don't assume that you won't like Happy because of this! mm, as you look over the archives, i think you will find that the range of artists mentioned and recommended is enormous! nor are most of them compared to Happy, musically or otherwise -- rather, people find ecto a good place to discuss all sorts of musical interests... everybody on your list has been mentioned here at one point or another (though i admit you were the first to mention Daniel Amos :) my own list of musical interests would include the Blue Aeroplanes, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Severed Heads, Ivo Papasov (the madman of bulgarian jazz ;), etc etc etc... i am sure there is something in my collection to offend almost everyone, and hopefully one or two things that people haven't heard that they would really like... so, tell us more about what you like, and be prepared to hear about all sorts of strange artists from others! Yes yes yes!!! Ecto has been consistent in providing references to *very* interesting artists that I would otherwise never had heard of. I've heard references to them on this list, and I've seen song and record titles use it (Suzanne Ciani and Kate Bush pop into mind), and now I am reading the lyrics to a new Tear Garden album that makes another reference to it.. Is it biblical or something? (my religious background is nil, so I always assume that if I don't understand a reference, it must be biblical or something).. Someone mentioned having a poster of the 9th wave. What is that? Guns of liberation ushered in the dawn. One guy wears an eyepatch while the other wears a tie. One will play the liberator, one will run and hide. I hear the cannons crack a mile down. Freedom Street - Out of sight (out of mind). The ninth wave claimed a thousand while another thousand fled. Another question: I am listening to the first 5 seconds of my CD by Loreena McKennitt called "Elemental". It seems to be screwed up - the level is very low and one channel is silent, but then it pops into sound after the first 5 seconds. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it a flaw in my particular disc? I am thinking of returning it, but if it's like that on all of the discs, there's no point...
