When I did grep love warpaint.txt and got zip back, I decided to do a search through all the lyrics, and see what I came up with. Here are the results: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ooh rainlover Be my love So be wary of me rainlover Do you know where my love goes? I have my love I've a love for the fatal things Now love and life and I Protect and love your form A love equal in power But I want to keep my faith in love Now follow me my loves But I can love with all my heart But you can love with all your heart --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why I shouldn't love you? Who'll love you as a man There is no love (Mikey) Am I something you can love? 'Cause love is not the answer Ooh can you feel it yet, love? Let me know when you do, love Your love's too pure And I want your love I need your love ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And I want to love What is this love? Stay with thy night loves Keeping love and fear far apart Why do you love weak little thing? I love I've made I love My heart For your sake, love ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm going back (to my very sweet love) I'm in love with you, and it feels good If love is a game, I win I know you loved me Free love Believe..your love will return again And never cry because you feel unloved Your love will always be around the bend Believe..believe when I say..that I'll love you always Don't cry to me about your love affairs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Interesting how the lyrics have changed through the years. Hi all, I just finished editing down the HBP messages & songs we put on tape the other night. Here's a rundown: Michael Kaufman Sam Phillips "Lying" Cruel Inventions Chip Lueck Rainbirds "Big Fat Cat" Two Faces Mike Mendelson Harmonium "Dixie" ? (I didn't write it down...Michael?) Steve VanDevender Tom Leherer (sp?) "We'll All Go Together When We Go" An Evening Wasted... Vickie Mapes Genesis "Watcher of the Skies" Live (plus a bit of "Am I Very Wrong" under my message. AIVW is the song with the lines "Today's your birthday friend...let us our greetings to you send, happy friend...") The total time of all of our songs & messages is 28:10. The other 2 Chicago 'philes, Kiri and Mitch, sent their selections separately. I'll get this tape in the mail (Priority) on Monday. I'll second mjm's post and say that we had a great time during our mini Ecto party the other night with Steve here. What a wonderful fellow!! He has to come back, because we didn't get to show/play him a fraction of what we wanted to. As it was, we kept him up pretty late, so I hope he gets lots of rest before his race in Atlanta. I'm much more curious about how one "orks" cows than I am about how one foo's a tah. Is is anything like tipping cows? And how much do you tip a cow, anyway? ...speaking of cows, I think I'll go put on Jane's "Mystery of Ogwen's Farm" and marvel at someone cool enough to write a song about a missing cow...poor Bessie. I know about Iris De Ment. My friend Charley, who's heavily into Kate, Jane and Happy and who would be on the net if he didn't hate computers, brought over her CD a couple of weeks ago. I only listened to a few songs before he took it home with him. I liked what I heard. It's folk/country-ish and she's got an interesting voice. Reading the liner notes, I was surprised to find out that she lives in Kansas City! I never heard of her when we lived there. The little I heard I'd categorize in the Nancy Griffith/Robin Holcomb/Lucinda Williams genre of country/folk, though she doesn't sound like any of those people. Helps, doesn't it? :-/ I put off finishing the "Weird Country" tape(s) for Doug to dub just so I could include Iris, but Charley hasn't brought it back over yet and I haven't bought it myself yet. One of these days... She was here in concert, and I didn't find out about it until the day after, when Charley called and said *he'd* just found out about it. Pooh! Along the same lines, I found out that The Story were here 2 weeks *after* they'd been here. They played at a little place that never has "anybody" playing there. I quit checking the listings of this place over 2 years ago, but I will definitely check their listings from now on. I don't like The Story's album as much as other people on this list do, but I can imagine that they'd be great fun in concert and I'm sorry I missed them. Sarah's coming back to Chicago in August, so this time I'll be sure to record it and get a show ID. I'm amazed that she's touring again so soon. Chris Sampson (whose coworker does not ork cows) had a very interesting post with lots of good things that I'd just love to excerpt from but I can't because this editor won't let me and Chinet is not answering so I can't go there and so here I am... >From memory... Re: Warm fuzzies. Are you speaking specifically of the Ectophile brand of warm fuzzies? If so, that could refer to either a warm, friendly atmosphere or winter booties. Take your pick. If it's another reference to warm fuzzies, I don't know. Wasn't there a SF novel about little furry creatures called _Little Fuzzies_ or something like that? I vaguely remember Earth beings colonizing a planet and coming across these little creatures and there was a trial to determine if they were sentient beings. They were. They were fuzzy, and I believe they were warm-blooded, and they were sentient, so might those be what you refer to? Re: Night On Earth. I haven't seen it either, but I'd like to, mainly because it has Winona Ryder and Gina Rowlands. The only other Jim Jarmusch film I've seem was _Stranger Than Paradise_ which I liked quite a bit. The last 2 movies we've seen were Batman Returns and Delicatesse (which is just as weird and wonderful as Anthony said it was) and I would recommend both of them. It's pretty obvious that BR is going to be either a love it or hate it movie. There seems to be very little middle ground The quotes by Mitch and Chris about subservient women reminded me of a lot of things. Mainly I thought of Sophie B. Hawkin's song "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover." I borrowed the cassette from Mitch and I want to get the CD. I was surprised while reading the lyrics to that song and realized that it is a lesbian or bi love song. The protagonist (the singer, though it may or may not be autobiographical for Sophie) is singing to a woman who is in an abusive relationship. ("That old dog has chained you up alright/ Gives you everything you need/To live inside a twisted cage/...can't stand to see you black and blue") The singer dearly wants to rescue the woman and show her what real love is like ("I had a dream I was your hero/Damn I wish I was your lover/I'll rock you till the daylight comes/Make sure you are smiling and warm/If I was your girl believe me/I'd turn on the Rolling Stones/We could groove along and feel much better/Do such things to ease your pain/Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed") I mean, WOW!! What a wonderful song! I liked it not knowing the lyrics at all. It's a great rock song, very torchy/catchy, but the lyrics make it rise even higher in my respect. I'll bet most of the radio/video programmers have never taken a look at the lyrics. I don't follow charts so I don't know how high it got, but it has to be the highest charting lesbian/bi love song ever. Since it could also be sung by a man, I think Prince should cover it. I actually though he might have written it, but it's a Sophie song. All the Spohie talk went on while I was off the net, so I wanted to throw in my thoughts about it. That's the best song on the album (IMHO) but there are other very good ones. I'm really looking forward to whatever she does in the future. I can't remember what else in Chris's post I wanted to talk about, the whole post was interesting. The excerpts that have been appearing in the press sound lurid and vicious taken out of context of the entire book, which is quite sympathetic toward Diana. And, I might add, quite unsympathetic toward Prince Charles. I've been a big Diana fan since she got engaged. I'm one of these people who loves to read anything at all about her and I even have quite a few photo books. This latest hoopla doesn't suprise me at all, because I've never liked Price Charles. When they first got married I thought that, well, he must be ok, if Diana fell in love with him, but as the years went by, she (and the rest of the world) found out otherwise. In years past, royal mis-marriages were kept quiet and only those closest to the couple knew about the problems. Nowadays though, the press is bound and determined to publicize every little thing. From what I hear, the press was one of the 2 major causes of Fergie and Andrew breaking up (the other being the fact that they've had very little time to spend together) and I can't blame Fergie at all. I liked her the way she was, but the press was always criticizing her about one thing or another. Yes, I'm a big Sarah Ferguson fan too. Anyway, I'm well aware of the hypocrisy of my feelings. If people like me weren't so interested in Diana and Sarah, the press wouldn't have an audience to write to. Still, I don't think either deserved the criticism they got over the years. The one thing I've always liked about both women is that they were *real* people. Women I'd love to invite over to have lunch, go to a movie with, hang out with. They're real women in a very unreal situation. Fergie couldn't handle it, and got out. Diana can't leave. I feel so sorry for her, and after reading the book, I respect her even more than I did before. Question to any British Ectophile who might want to answer it: How is all this hoopla being taken in England? What is the average Brit's feelings about Diana and Charles and the future of the monarchy? I don't mean what people are saying in the tabloids or on the chat shows, but rather the everyday man/woman-on-the-street reaction. I know that just like in any other country, there are many who could care less what goes on in the royal family, but I'm interested in the reactions of those who do care, one way or the other. Diana seems so well-loved in England, but Charles is the (maybe) future King. As an American without a drop of English blood, I tend to think that Charles whould be bypassed altogether and Prince William be made King but I don't even know if that can be done. How possible/likely is this? I know this doesn't have anything to do with Happy, but it interests me. I don't really see much use the English monarchy does, though the history of it all is fascinating. Since the royals aren't political, it seems that they are mainly useful in the areas of charity and goodwill. Royals such as Anne (who I've loved ever since she was bold enough to name her daughter Zara!) do plenty of good works in the charity department, but no one can touch Diana when it comes to goodwill. I find it hard to believe that the British people would turn against her because of this book, but I don't know if Charles and his position are so lofty (historically speaking) that people would just naturally take his side. That's why I'm asking. Btw, I said the royals are not political, but Diana is very involved in the AIDS cause which has become a very political issue. That's one of the things I really admire about her. She's the first royal who "dared" to shake the hand of an AIDS paitent with her ungloved hand. Someone said that "that's the most important thing a royal has done...ever" and I can see that it was a significant step in AIDS awareness and education a few years ago when she did it. As I was doing my weekly tour of the harvard square record stores, I walked into Tower to grab a PULSE! and the Braindance CD, which sounds pretty good so far, and as I was browsing the import section, looking for the Peter Hammill CD 'The fall of the house of Usher', I saw 5 CD's and one tape waiting to be filed, and they looked sort of familiar, and I then realized that I was looking at the 1st4 and Warpaint. Needless to say I almost had a heart attack (not really, but hey I was surprised :)), and sat there for about 5 minutes casually looking at them, and making sure the CD's were visible. YES! Does this mean Happy is getting airplay in Boston? If so, WHERE? Then I walked into Newbury Comics, and found out they had ANOTHER 6.99-7.99 CD sale, and walked out with a couple more CD's (VU and Nico, The hurting-TFF). I had promised no more CD's til September, but Happy in Cambridge is an occasion worth celebrating!!! Angelos PS. The Braindance CD is *really* good. Yep- that's why _Gossamer Axe_ is so good on the harping details. The tape is hauntingly beautiful stuff. Here is the introduction to the liner notes: ============ FOR MARTHA Where it came from... This music was made for Martha, my friend. By March of 1990, Martha's battle with cancer had lasted well over a year, and she had fought valiantly; but it had become apparent to her that she was losing. She decided at last to forgo further chemotherapy. She prepared herself to die. Shortly after she made this decision, Martha's husband contacted me. It would be a difficult death, he said. Could I prepare a tape of harp music that would help Martha make the transition between worlds as gently as possible? This tape was the result of his request, and of Martha's need. Based on a number of themes, traditional and original, ancient and modern, it is music of transition, liminal music, music that is intended to bridge gaps, to comfort, to heal the spirit. It was playing when she died. On many occasions in our lives, gaps need to be bridged, solace and healing need to be given. Death is certainly the greatest of these, but it is, in fact, only the last of a long series. Martha, I was told, was helped by this music. I hope it helps you also, regardless of what transition you might face. Peace to you. Gael Kathryns, 1990 ============ I can't listen to this tape very often- it's too powerful for all but the moods it was intended for. It's beautiful. If I find a more accessible way of obtaining this tape than SF cons, I'll be sure to post it here.
