There were 12 Digests (long Digests) worth of material. Knowing most people's mail boxes can't handle a load like that, I have not issued these 12 Digests, but instead have put them directly into the archives. They are Digests #979 through 990 (inclusive), available in hardees.rutgers.edu:~ftp/pub/hr/ecto/January_94/. If you don't have ftp capability and would like any/all of them e-mailed to you, just let me know. My apologies for any inconvenience. Brage) Subject: Cranes, Cherryh & Clausing Hi! A while ago woj asked me about my Cranes remarks: >> The Cranes disk was quite a surprise: Much softer than I had >> expected... > based on what previous exposure? their earliest stuff, prior to _wings > of joy_ was a lot noisier with harsh guitars and the lot. i've only > heard a few tracks of that, one of which can be found on the melody > maker cd compilation _gigantic 2_ (or was that new musical express?). Well, I didn't have any previous exposure, so my impressions were based on comments from ectophiles... Actually, I think I'll retract my remarks about the softness of "Wings of Joy"! ;-) At the time, I had only listened to the CD once (and inattentively), so I hadn't really noticed the pretty noisy stuff in the middle of the album... The beginning *is* pretty soft, though... Btw: The Marie Frederiksson album I got at the same time ("Den staendiga resan") is really good too! Sure, there are some annoyingly poppish songs here and there, but some of the songs are *very* good... Sort-of like Eva Dahlgren... >> Btw., while I was in Australia I picked up a new book by `the >> oft-discussed': "Faery in Shadow". > ooh ooh! i've not seen that yet. i'm in the middle of her (c.j. > cherryh for those who were wondering) latest paperback in the states, > _the goblin mirror_, right now. Tsk, tsk, do we really want to let the ignorants in on the secret? ;-) :-) Btw, have you seen a paperback version of "Chanur's Legacy"? One of my friends bought it when it came out in hardcover, but I decided to wait for the paperback - and apparently it's still not out! Augh!!! [I have read CL, but I need to have my own copy for repeated readings!] -o- Out of the (fuzzy?) blue: How come I haven't seen any remarks about Mary Black's "The Holy Ground"??? The songs are perhaps not quite as good as the ones from "Babes in the Wood" (the superb imagery of "Still Believing" or "Bright Blue Rose" is somewhat missing), but MB's voice leaves absolutely nothing to be desired... Wow! "Dockland" is probably the best track... Aside: I first saw (and heard about) this disk on the 23rd December, as I was shopping for CDs for my father and brother, but resisted the urge (I had just bought >20 disks home from Australia). But I told my brother about the new disk in the evening (he's a major BitW fan, too), and, as it turned out, hadn't bought my present yet, so he rushed out and got it for me... :-) -o- I'd better do some klasuing while I'm here.... Anthony tries to keep op the hifi thread: > Well I don't know about you, Bob, but I feel that Klipsch's use of > passive subwoofers in their Tangent range is the most economical way > of reproducing Bass Notes Of Doom ever invented. Well, I don't know about economy, but I'd recommend magnetostats and a fairly powerful amplifier (e.g., 2x200W) for the best BNoDs... This way you'll get some beautiful infrasound notes as well (try listening to some of the songs from "Solace"); it may not *sound* as much, but watch the windows shake in the neighboring rooms... ;-) Seriously, magnetostats aren't very efficient (powerwise), but the definition in the bass (and the treble) is amazing... -o- Sue writes (belated welcomes!): > To Greg - The Peter Weir film you were speaking about is called > "Picnic at Hanging Rock" - Thought you might like to know. They > do remind me of songs I forgot to put on my lists though. "Possessed" - > how could I forget "Possessed?" Ack! But *does* "Possessed" count as a True HR Song? ;-) But I agreed, this is one of my favorites too... Btw, do we know who Dave Snyder is? Further on in the post: > I realize that Ecto probably would be a lot bigger if the > non-Happy/music content and volume were lowered. I know lots of people > not on Ecto who've said "I just can't handle the volume" and have > either never subscribed or unsubscribed. That's > nice. I certainly agreed with your feelings about Ecto's ways (and would be very wary of imposing any posting rules). [As you might notice, my way of dealing with the volume is to be constantly 50-100 digests behind... ;-)] However, perhaps there ought to be some service for people who just want to know about new Happy releases, her tour plans for Denmark, etc, without having to sift through Ecto's masses of information. Perhaps a list similar to Anthony's one-way Margot Smith list could be created, mostly for announcements from AG. Of course, this would require somebody (don't look at me! :-)) to set up the list and forward messages (and perhaps also to forward selected postings from Ecto)... -o- And we've got a new Nordicphile! Welcome to Paul from Lund (which a very nice town, not so far from Denmark. I spent a couple of months at Lund's Technical University a few years ago...)! [And welcome to Paul and Michael from Russia as well!] -o- Jeff writes: > 2) Ingrid Chavez, _May 19 1992_. $4 So that's what it's called! Is this true? Funny, it doesn't strike me as dancy(sp?) at all; I guess I concentrate on Chavez' speaking rather than the `music' (which is really just a drum track)... As Anthony says: Yummy! -o- Talking (once more) about Anthony, it is time for "Strange Phenomena on Ecto" : I was waiting for a `du' scan of my smaller harddisk (it filled up while I was installing a new version of `flex'); to pass the time I started reading Old Ectos, and found this one from Anthony: > If news and mail articles were cats, I'd be in a new Alfred Hitchcock > production in which a humble person's 120Mb hard disk is overrun by an > invasion of felines all begging to have attention paid to them and to > be fed, but.. hang on, this is the silliest analogy ever. > HARD DRIVE VACUUMING TIME Hmm... And the next mail was from Bob, who wrote: > The other is Happy's recent stop at WXPN, featuring an all new > acoustic version of "Closer" (with the Bar Chord of Doom!). The song playing on my stereo was "Closer"... -o- Tim is concerned about CD rot: > I was reading an article in Time-Out at the weekend. I had a quick look at some of my early CDs (circa 1985/86) > and they all looked fine and played fine. One of my disks, I think it's Pretenders first album, has turned golden recently, but it still plays perfectly. The story I've heard (from the Danish manufacturer of CD-ROMs and audio disks) is that some labels in the beginning used some kind of paint for the disk labels which, in the long run, attacks the resin which protects the CD... Not too bright... The only disk I've got with `scratches', is my copy of "Wish You Were Here" :-(. The first copy I bought was pretty bad, so I took it back to the store (they believed me when the disk made their player skip 2 seconds backwards...) and got a new one. Which was scratchy too, if not so badly! Must have been a bad pressing. At this point I gave up... -o- Pamela talks about European smoking habits: > My father's family is Danish, and every last one of them smokes like a > chimney. My uncle said it's because they're so heavily taxed that > smoking is one of the few things they can enjoy. How much validity > that statement really has, I don't know. :) Eh, he must have forgotten quite a bit about Denmark: We have some very high taxes on tobacco (as on alcohol)! :-) But actually, there is currently a strong trend against smoking (e.g., smoking is now forbidden in public offices etc.). Luckily, even as fewer people smoke, those who does, smoke more; so we keep up the tax revenue... ;-) Yeah! Jihad! Roll the smokers in their own paper and burn them! Kil.......Oh, sorry, not the right list... ;-) -o- Brian responded to Jessica's posting about gay-bashing: > Yeah, I know what you mean, Jessica. One of my co-workers is a > bible-beating homophobe. He was lookng over my shoulder and saw > Courtney's announcement. All he did was shake his head and mutter > "Man, what is this world coming to?" I wanted to belt him. Want to hear a truly sad story? In Denmark we've got laws against discrimination based on sex, race or sexual preferences; but one or two years ago a `little old lady' made some public and very aggressive attacks on homosexuals (more or less stating that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to live, I think), refering to the bible for `proof'. She was taken to court for discrimination, but was let go without any punishment: According to the ruling, she was just repeating statements from the bible and so *she* didn't commit the offense! :-( :-( I think a lot of people were shocked at this ruling... And the law has turned out to be almost as inefficient against racial discriminations... :-( -o- Bob writes about entropy (btw, I hope your mother is doing well!): > The point is, as the physical universe is crumbling, the spiritual > universe is increasing. We really ARE all going somewhere! So be > proud of yourselves that you are here, accept yourselves. "We are but > a moment's sunlight fading on the grass..." "So you see that you are > really very small and life flows on within you and without you..." This description immediately brought Asimov's short-story "The Last Question" to mind; probably one of his best stories (at least in concept - the writing is so-so...). You can find it in, e.g., "Opus". Read it! :-) -o- Laurel of Minnesotan-Lutheran-Norwegian-German origin has troubles and quotes Poi Dog Pondering's "Thanksgiving". This whole thread (about personal problems and support from Ecto) and the PDP quote made me think of Crash Test Dummies, who also writes deceptively amusing lyrics: There's a skeleton in everybody's closet I can think of one or two in my own room But I would like to introduce them both to you You'd shake their bony hands and so dispell the gloom -o- Finally, to end my klaus on a happier note, I'll join Michael in a praise to camp fires: > Those are really very nice, romantic, and remembrance-worthy (huh?) > moments in my life - sitting with my friends around the fire in the > deep night, the eerie non-silence of forest around you, drinking tea, > talking, maybe singing something with guitar... feeling the tired > muscles after a 20-km walk through the marshy wood with 20-25 kg > backpack... relaxing in the tent... Yeah... Nothing like hiking (or biking, and canoeing or whatever mode of transport you choose). I'll recommend Sweden and Norway for hiking; lots of beautiful places to go... Jens P. Are they still together? > Does the song World Party appear on anything *by* World Party (aka KW)? Karl Wallinger left the Waterboys after their third album "This is the Sea" in 1985. There is still a Waterboys, but it is in reality pretty much Mike Scott and whoever is with him at the moment. However, the Waterboys latest album "Dream Harder" is excellent and made my top ten of '93. The two previous Waterboys albums "Fisherman's Blues" and "Room to Roam" were by a new Waterboys lineup and leaned heavily toward Irish folk. The new album is a return to the somewhat anthemic rock of the earlier albums. However, I don't know which World Party album the song "World Party" appears on, if any. I would suspect the first album, because that is the one I don't have. +########################################################################+ +###+ Paul Cohen, Philadelphia, PA +###+ +########################################################################+ +###+ P.COHEN@genie.geis.com +###+ PMCOHEN@aol.com +###+ +###+ 70703.3126@compuserve.com +###+ PMCOHEN@delphi.com +###+ +########################################################################+ ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 29 Jan 94 5:50:18 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: An Englishman in Chicago Yay....Tim Cook is here!
