I haven't been too good about keeping everyone informed about what's up with me... here's a status update: my court date was pushed off, so i'm driving legally right now (yippie! first time in years :) and will be at least until i go to court (i don't have a new date yet). I'm going to be fined a minimum of $2000 because there is a minimum required sentance of $500 for each instance of driving on a suspension, and i had 4. blech. whether or not my license gets additionally suspended will be up to the judge. My therapist is going to write me a letter to bring to court explaining that my depression contributed to my irresponsibility with regard to paying the DMV bills on time.... i hope that helps ;) I'm still on prozac. my psychiatrist just upped the dosage, he feels there has been improvement but there can be more. I agree :) i'm clearly feeling a lot better than before, but i'm still not feeling *good* most of the time. I wasn't sure the medication really did anything - but i went off it for three days and the change was *frightening*. I will not do that again, that's for sure. Well, i'm off to san francisco for a week ;) hope to see all the s.f. area ectophiles while i'm there!!! jessica ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 16 Jan 1994 11:58:29 -0400 (EDT) From: terry kroetsch f Subject: Re: ecto #969 unsubscribe ======================================================================== From: freeform@aol.com Date: Sun, 16 Jan 94 12:49:29 EST Subject: Happy...Jane.. I got a call from the record store yesterday telling me that all three came in! Yay! Now I just have to get the money together to get them.... Plus I need to have money ready for Tori and Sarah's upcoming releases too! I've been reading all the posts lately about Jane Siberry. I've been a fan of hers since 1985 or so when I saw the video for "One More Colour" on MTV (!) I agree with the others who have said that her albums can take awhile to get into. I had a hard time getting used to her latest album, but it finally 'clicked' with me and I think it's great. Does Jane have a video collection available? How many videos has she made, anybody know? I've only seen "One More Colour" and "Ingrid and the Footman". Catch you all later... More than 10 CDs for less than $30 is a great deal, regardless of what the CDs are. In any case my most recent expedition yielded the following purchases, some of which are great, and some of which are somewhat lacking: Disappear fear-Deep soul diver This band has been mentioned here before, but I muct have been sleeping since I remember nothing about them. They remind me of the Indigo Girls back when I liked them (around 1989), and the CD is contemporary to those recordings. Excellent! Beutiful Pea Green Boat-Still Life I borrowed this from Greg aka footah a few years back and loved it, but couldn't find it anywhere. Now I own it and still like it as much. Has this band released anything else since? LLCool J-Mama said knock you out Well, err, I like the title song, and some other songs on it, so I couldn't resist the $1.95 price. I'm no expert in Rap, but this one is pretty good. Philadelphia - Soundtrack I got this for the new PG song, which keeps growing on me, but I have ended up liking most of it. I think Neil Young will be the next artist I will look into. I know lots of his songs but have never listened to an album of his. Maybe it's time. Heretix- The adventures of superdevil Sounds good in a first exploratory listen. Doesn't top Gods and gangsters though, IMHO. Live-4 songs EP Nice energetic 'alternative' rock. Roger Hodgson-Hai Hai I didn't even know about this one. I really liked his first solo album 'In the eye of the storm', and since I recently re-discovered Supertramp I enjoyed this one. Not as imaginative as old Supertramp, but still worth the listen. Crime and the City Solution-Paradise Discotheque I got this based on their song on the Until the end of the world soundtrack and so far am not disappointed. Dark music and arrangements. Good stuff. And now the less than stellar ones: stina-Memories of a color Err, what exactly did people like in this one? Her voice, enunciation (?) and the overall music tend to annoy me. Sorry. This one will soon find a new home. Sarah Brightman-Dive Nice voice. Overslick arrangements. Overall pretty. I will keep this one and listen to it again paying a little more attention. I don't think it deserves the slack it got in gaffa. Nicky Holland Who is this person? I got this for 50c, and it's just a disc with title tracks. Nothing else. It's sort of jazzy and moody. Listenable. Back to the listening room :) Angelos ======================================================================== From: Tree of Schnopia Subject: Greetings, Xmas, and FTE Date: Sun, 16 Jan 1994 16:00:20 -0500 (EST) Greetings, all...good to be back... On Xmas... ...Doug, I *did* see many references to the "real" reason for celebrating Christmas in the mass media to which I have access. And when I do, I've a struggle not to let the overwhelmingly Christian pressure depress the hell out of me. I could celebrate the original, Roman holiday, but would I be treated with tolerance? Not in my family. Not in my town. Not in my country. Okay, well, tolerance, perhaps, but certainly not friendliness. Can't imagine why I would, either, considering I'm not Roman any more than Christian. But if there is a God, He/She/It created me not to assume that I can accept His/Her/Its existence and/or preferred method of worship on any of the flimsy bases offered by the world's religion. I find it hard to believe that a Christian God designed me to require proof...it's like telling a color-blind person that they will be consigned to eternal damnation unless they can distinguish red and green. So I celebrate Xmas. I celebrate the winter solstice with my family, sing their carols, perpetuate their mythology, but I do not believe it. I celebrate Christmas because I celebrate Xmas. But enough of the religion thing already... On Sarah McLachlan's latest triumph... ...Tree, it's magnifique. Lovely. Gorgeous. It combines the best of Touch and Solace, and none of the worst. The only complaint I could possibly offer is that I miss her drums...much too electronic here. And the title of the album is _Fumbling_Towards_Ecstasy_. Drewcifer -- ---- Andrew D. Ohpelia > As for the ongoing latin lesson, [...] > Semper Fi (semper FYE...fie on't fie! Frailty! Thy name is woman!...er, Did it ever occur to you that this is an English pronunciation of the word 'Fi'? Latin is spoken different by anyone speaking a different mother tongue. Of course there is at least one correct way to pronounce Latin, though you can't figure it out by reading Latin text. What you do need is a book from ancient times (when Latin was still a spoken language) which tries to teach the reader how to speak Latin as a foreign language. And please, don't try to write this down with your own letters, since noone now knows how THESE should be spoken. Sounds like a difficult job, doesn't it? Well, there are ancient books that say how to hold the tongue, lips, teeth etc., so it is possible to figure out how to speak 'native Latin', or at least a good approximation. The same thing is needed to get the melody of the language right. Most people will 'know' Latin from its use in churches, and therefore think that Latin really uses this special kind of monotonous melody. This isn't true. A few years ago I've seen a TV programme where someone spoke 'native Latin'. It was very melodic and not at all monotonous. Of course you cannot be sure that you grasp the reality exactly, but at least you get into the right direction. Another thing to remember is that Latin during its use which spanned more than 1000 years or somesuch (<700 BC to >300 AC) will have changed quite a lot. English didn't really exist 1000 years ago, and noone who's not specially trained would understand the German spoken then. No, I don't know how to pronounce certain Latin words. Pronounce them as you think they should be pronounced, it's as correct as anything else. Did anyone, *anyone* see "The Walking" tour? If you did, and you know who her backup singers were, please tell me. I'm not certain that they were Rebecca Jenkins and Gina S(sp?), who were with her on earlier tours. One in particular is a *powerhouse* and I don't think it's either Rebecca or Gina. The reason I ask is that I've gotten a tape (audience recording boot) of the show. This was recorded April 27, 1988 at Chapel Chatham College in Pittsburg, PA. I don't know if the tape is complete. Here's the list: Jane Siberry April 27, 1988 Chapel Chatham College, Pittsburg, PA Medley1 The Bird In The Gravel Vladimir-Vladimir Dancing Class Ingrid & the Footman Seven Steps To The Wall One More Color Medley2 The Bird In The Gravel Dancing Class Lena Is A White Table Map Of The World Pt. 1 (ends with bit of unknown song) The Walking (and constantly) Mimi On The Beach Extra Executives Red High Heels The White Tent The Raft The Bird In The Gravel Looks like Bird...was the encore, though it wasn't the entire thing, since parts of it were sung earlier in the medleys. We didn't see this tour I know that Jane fans would just die for this (I did) but I really can't take requests for dubs. If it's ok with Doug, I can send him various Jane things I've recently aquired, but I don't want to weigh him down with a single artist (Happy & various compilations are one thing, making him the Jane Siberry dub center of the universe is quite another.) Anyway, I hope something can be worked out, either Doug telling me it's ok with him, or someone else offering to be a dub center. I don't have tons of Jane things, but since I've been in a Jane mood recently, I've dug up some live shows and interviews that either I didn't know I had, forgot I had, or just recently aquired. When I got my first album ("Bound by the Beauty") for some while I couldn't get at all excited about it. Sounded to me like a second rate Joni Mitchell sound-alike (not an opinion I hold any longer I hasten to add!). Repeated exposure did the trick though and enabled me to adjust to Jane's wavelength. Then I was hooked. I agree that "Bound by the Beauty" is a bit different from her other albums, and may indeed be weaker overall. I still like it a lot though, more so than "No Borders Here" and "The Speckless Sky" (yes, heretical views I know!). I think the important thing about "Bound by the Beauty" is that each song seems to be based on a groove. Catch onto that and you can appreciate where the song's coming from, there doesn't seem to be the same concious structuring that can be found on e.g. "The Walking". It has the feel to me of a bunch of songs put together in the studio by the band fooling around and picking up ideas and playing with them rather than a set of songs that Jan's sat down and written herself prior to starting recording. In this it seems atypical of her albums, but a good part of her personality is evident and can be appreciated, and this I found helped me to get into the other albums much more quickly. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** New .sig quote currently under construction. *** ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 17 Jan 1994 12:25:12 +0000 From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk (Steve Fagg's Mac) Subject: Re: X-tian At 12:04 am 15/1/94 -0800, Steve Lamb wrote: >On Fri, 14 Jan 1994, Doug Burks wrote: > >> did not see in the mass media even one mention of the real reason for >> celebrating Christmas. *sigh* > > The reason for this Atheist is because it is a national holiday.
