I've been a fan of Jane Siberry since '85 or '86 when I saw the video for "One More Colour" on MTV (!!). For some reason, it wasn't until the other day that I finally got her very first album. I was surprised at how much I like it, and can't believe it's taken me this long to get it. Oh well, better late than never. I especially like the sound of the last two songs, more piano based than a lot of Jane's songs. Anyway, my question is, I am stuck with Jane's _The Walking_ on tape (yuck) and want to get it on CD. I know the US version of the CD is out of print. Why did they discontinue that CD?! All of her other ones are available! Makes no sense to me. I'll have to see if I can get the import.. I was in my favorite local music store yesterday. I go there often because you can listen to any CD that they have in the store. They have listening stations where you can sit and listen to CD's. I listened to Victoria Williams' _Happy Come Home_ since I'd heard good things about it on ecto. Very interesting music! After the first song I was used to her voice. I'll have to add that to my buy list, which is already too long (sigh...) At least I got the chance to hear it. I only have three of Happy's CD's at the moment. I will get the others as soon as I get the money for it. The latest one that I got was _Rearmament_. I really love the first song "Perfect Irony"! Happy REALLY sounds like Kate (circa Lionheart) on "Til The Dawn Breaks", I think. This is a really good CD. Can't wait to get the others.. Well I haven't bought many albums this year, and pretty much everything I did buy (and want to get) has been because of ecto (I love this list!) So here's some of my favourites more or less in order... Kate Bush - "This Woman's Work" :) Due to not having a CD player until early this year, I didn't have any of Kate's albums on disc... therefore I was delighted to find this re-released and picked it up for what I gather is a quite reasonable price... My most prized musical possession! :) Jane Siberry - "When I Was A Boy" Divine... (I have since gotten hold of "The Walking" and "No Borders Here" via Wellington library (someone has/had good taste:) and have made tapes for myself... WIWAB is my favourite, with TW not far behind... NBH comes last, and although I have not listened to it much so far, it cannot match the others! Heidi Berry - "Heidi Berry" I liked this very much when I first listened to it... I really love it now... beautiful... Kate Bush - "The Red Shoes" Yes, there are some disappointing tracks here, but there are also som wonderful ones... I find I simply pay less attention during those songs which I like less and they make fine background music :) The only song I really dislike is WSILY... Dead Can Dance - "A Passage In Time" / "Into The Labyrinth" My first DCD experience was listening to ITL in a shop... I liked some of it immediately, other bits less... overall I was unsure. Then I found APIT and decided to buy it as soon as I'd heard it! Wonderful... I ended up getting ITL as well, and while I still like APIT more, it has grown on me... Matthew Sweet - "Altered Beast" I bought this on a whim, and at first thought I had made a bad mistake... however after a few listens I found I liked it a lot... possibly the fact that I almost exclusively listen to female vocalists caused initial problems for me... Well that's about it for me really... I do have a ridiculously large list of albums to get however, so my collection will improve by and by... :) Philip (who visited Mike's room in TinyTim today :) ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 10 Jan 94 08:26:50 +0000 From: Terry Partis Subject: Resubscribe Hi all, can you please re-subscribe me to the Happy mailing list Jessica. Woof. Hi EctoCollective! Wow, what a strange week it's been here in Australia. A few weeks ago we had minor floods here in Melbourne, and it's been cold and wet ever since (warming up nicely now, though). Meanwhile, in Sydney and most of New South Wales, high winds, high temperatures and a bunch of complete jerks lighting fires resulted in more than one quarter of the state going up in flames. It's still going, the scale is incomprehensible and the images quite shocking. I am sure many of you in the US and the UK would have heard about it; TV news feeds I've seen have been carrying it as one of the main stories. The worst thing is that after the first reports came out about how arsonists had started most of this destruction, a whole new bunch went out and *lit more*. As they used to say in a Monty Python film, "Death's too good for them". Now, to cheerier matters... 1. I'll be interviewing Jane Siberry AGAIN this or next week, so get those questions you've always wanted to ask Jane in the mail to me now! :) Hopefully I'll get around to transcribing this one. I am also listed to interview Tori Amos but no firm word on that one yet. I missed out last time, while the opposition magazine got an interview. Bah. :-) 2. Courtney - welcome back, and get well soon! I know how it feels. Snurfle. 3. Kevin Holy - now he's here! :-) Welcome to you. 4. Elvis - come in, your time is up. 5. Avoid "Striking Distance" and "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" at all costs. Dennis Parlowises: > Fine, fine, here is *The Definitive Top Ten List* ;-) > > 1) Shonen Knife "Lets Knife!" I'm curious about this too - even more so since last night's "Beverly Hills 90210". (Not that I watch it. It was, err, on in the background. Really.) Brandon's quite-obviously-soon-to-be-next-girlfriend appears on camera beaming and VERY suntanned for a character who's supposed to have lived in New York, wearing a beach outfit that screams "free spirit". She promptly grins and says "Ally ally oxenfree!". Maybe the writers are Happy fans. Hmm. :-) Paul Cohen points out that US record companies have a clue: > Anthony: > All of the Church albums are out on CD in America on Arista. I'd be amazed > that they all aren't out in Australia. The only thing that I haven't seen > on CD is the "Sing Songs" EP. All the Church albums are on CD in Australia except "Seance". It never sold well, but even so it's surprising it never got a re-release. The other EMI Church albums are on budget, as are a couple of the Mushroom ones. "Remote Luxury" was a 5 track EP here and as such isn't out on CD (it pre-dated the CD boom) and the same goes for the other half of the US RL, a 5 track EP called "Persia". Some of the "Sing Songs" tracks are on a (Australia only?) double CD compile released by EMI called "Hindsight", compiled by Kilbey himself. > Kilbey's solo work is extremely experimental. That includes the "Narcosis" > EP and especially "Remindlessness". Not that I think experimentation is a > bad thing, but really only "The Slow Crack" approaches his work with The I actually thought "Narcosis" was more an ambient pop EP!
