I LOVED this episode -- a lot of the whiners on alt.tv.northern-exp didn't, but what do they know? What Maggie said about not wanting children rang so true to me -- and don't forget Joel's line, "Kids are just germs in footed pajamas" :-) (With apologies to the ecto-parents out there, of course...) ----end quote---- I agree totally! Thought they copped out on Maggie's feelings a bit at the end, but they really did give her childfree attitude a good showing. It was a great antidote to the excess natalism in the rest of the segment. (BTW, there is a national group for those who like staying childfree. It's the Childfree Network, 7777 Sunrise Blvd., Suite 1800, Citrus Heights, CA 95610, phone (916) 773-7178. They publish a good newsletter and are starting social/support chapters in cities all over the USA. One year is $20.) Also loved that Pretenders song, and wondered what it was. I thought it was a really incredible show. They did a lot of vocal demonstrations, but when they sat down and played as a band they really shown. Most of the odd sounds they made sounded like they swallowed things to me, varying from a jews harp to a kazoo to a didgeradoo. As a band, they were much more accesible than I expected, and occasionally played music that had sort of an Irish feel to it (or so I thought). They had just flown from Tuva to Moscow to New York to San Diego in the course of 2 days (about 1200 miles) and were quite impressed with the weather here, as compared to the occasional -50 in Tuva. For all you in the Bay Area, they are doing a concert in Stanford on Saturday (that's tomorrow, the 8th) that I would love to go to. 50 minutes of Tuvans, 50 minutes of the Kronos Quartet, and then the Tuvans and Kronos playing together. Should be incredible. And, if anyone is really interested in the stuff, I bought a pair of discs and am willing to tape things: Huun-Huur_Vu's 60 HOrses in my Herd, Old Songs and Tales of Tuva (The announcers heavily accented introduction made this sound like 60 horses in my head. HOrses are a very frequent topic for the TUvans.) I also bought Tuva: Voices of Middle Asia (or something like that), a Smithsonian Field Recording. Afterwards we couldn't help but try our hand at making some of those sounds, to pretty hilarious results (both sounding and looking). My roommate, who didn't go and would have hated it, couldn't stop trying to sing along when I put on the disc, after she quit rolling around on the floor. I've gotten to know one of the owners fairly well (it's a two-man show - no salesdroids, just people who care about what they're selling), and last year when I was auditioning speakers I turned him on to Tori (using "Me And A Gun" to listen for realistic female vocals), and he returned the favor by pointing me to Kate, which led me to gaffa, which led me to Happy, and to Ecto, and here I am! But I told him that _Under The Pink_ was coming out soon, and he told me that since I introduced him to Tori, he got a copy himself to use to play for other customers. It seems that 5 or 6 people every week come in to listen to components, but when they leave they go right down the street and buy a copy of Little Earthquakes themselves! That means about 250 people in the last year who probably never would have heard of Tori, but are now fans! I love it! So of course I immediately brought out some Happy, and he was suitably impressed. He's going to go out & get RhodesSongs, and I hope he'll find some good tracks to use. He used to use Depeche Mode for deep bass, but maybe he could use something like "When The Dawn Breaks". And the actual recordings of her guitar are amazingly clear & crisp. I guess they didn't have enough effects on hand to mess it up with. ;-) There's some *good* demo material in there. So if you have a good stereo store near you, go listen to some music there! It won't work at places like Good Guys, or Circuit City, or anywhere they're selling junk to make money, instead of selling music because they love it. But look in your area for the little specialty stores, with all the obscure high end brands, and go listen to some systems there. You'll find just how great the recordings actually are, and you might plant a seed... Of course, I *had* to get the new player in my system that night. The first CD in - Ecto. Of course. ;-> Followed the next night by Pink Floyd, Tori, and a bunch of test/demo disks. It sounds fantastic - open invitation to any SF Bay Area 'philes who want to come by for a listen... All it require is some amount of time hacking the code and them someone testing it all the time, so the Alice won't run somewhere leaving the guest behind, or get stuck in an endless cycle, or whatever :) I'd like to offer my place in TinyTim again - it is pretty bare though, but it could be a place to start. Once again - it's yay.mdc.com , port 5440 Mitch: > It seems that waiting for an elevated train on a cold evening can raise one's > sensory awareness of certain things in a way one may not have anticipated. I second that! You see, I'm taking shuttle train almost every day of my life since 1986 - first to attend 9th and 10th forms of secondary school, then to attend college, and then to go to work. This is because I live in 60 km from St.Petersburg itself - it's about 40 mins by train. So waiting on the platform is quite a part of life here :) - and it sure does heighten your awareness, especially in the mornings. Listening to Happy's music while waiting did prove highly worthy, by the way :) Unrelated: - Ally Ally Oxenfree is just so great! :) Anyone volunteer to point out what it could mean, btw? - Careful investogation showed that the Russian bands I mentioned have been issued on CD - Bravo (The Best of), DDT (two CDs, forgot the names), and Aquarium (at least 4 CDs). You might want to check your favorite stores. Happy Birthday to Paul Cohen, somewhere in Connecticut !! I just realized that I sent my impressions of Alex's 'Variety' tape to him only and didn't share them with all of you, which seems unfair, so here we go - Side A Clannad - Theme from Harry's Game and _The Hunter_ I liked it at the first try - pleasant voice, and all the arrangement is very nice. Kinda reminds me Enya in something. Laurie Anderson - _Strange Angels_ and _Babydoll_ I've been meaning to get to listen to some of her music for about 4 years, after I encountered several mentions to it in several places, one of them being a small rhyme in Datamation, which went like this - Artificial intelligence Will be achieved One day And at that day That brain of silicon Will say - "The hell with you And your mission!" And stop, And start to listen To the Laurie Anderson tapes, ..... :) I liked it, especially the Spanish-stylised arrangement in _Strange Angels_. I'll definitely go out to buy some albums of her. Bettie Serveert - _Palomine_ and _Tom Boy_ Interesting. I don't know how that could be, but at first listen of Palomine I thought it could be Vega - huh? Undoubtedly worth investigating. Shakespear's sister - _Stay_ and _Let Me Entertain You_ Good, tasty pop. I liked it, and this one have also gone to the WANTED list :) Danielle Dax : _The ID parade_ and _The living and their stillborn_ I wrote to Alex that I didn't really like this one, because it's a bit too harsh-n-heavy for me, but after several more listens it seems less so. SIDE B Caterwaul : _Alex's Aphrodisiac_ , _Small things in heaven_ and _Manna and Quail_ No thank you :) - Voice is interesting but the music is not for my taste, at the moment at least. Poi Dog Pondering : _U-Li-La-Lu_ and _The Ancient Egyptians_ Folky stuff. Pleasant to listen but I'm not really into such music at large. Could be nice to keep as a background on bored Sundays Peter Gabriel : _Love to be loved_ , _Digging in the dirt_ , _Sledgehammer_, _Don't give up_ , _In your eyes_ , _Games without frontiers_ Just superb. That is, I have heard Gabriel before :) - but now I'm absolutely sure that I simply _need_ to have _So_ and _Us_, at least. Gone to the _top_ of WANTED list All in all, great tape, thanks to Alex again! Back to ecto-digests :) (as a side note, this message have already taken 4 days to write :) - between going to work, to eat, to sleep, and to get more ecto digests ) Welcome to Ecto for Brad Hutchinson! I think you already like it, but that's nothing compared to how you'll like it in some weeks/months! :) Oh, great! No more digests... though some 20-30 more messages are undoubtedly waiting for me at Paul's dream.demos.su :) Well then, I'm off to finish tapes for Alex and woj , and Merry Orthodox Christmas to anyone who might be celebrating it today (Jan 7th) :) On an impulse, here's a nice quote as an ending for this message - "Love is where you find it. I think it is foolish to go looking for it, and I think it can often be poisonous. I wish that people who are conventionally supposed to love each other would say to each other, when they fight, "Please - a little less love, and a little more common decency." I'd be amazed that they all aren't out in Australia. The only thing that I haven't seen on CD is the "Sing Songs" EP. Kilbey's solo work is extremely experimental.
