Having said that, here I go... (1) Primus _Pork Soda_ What can I say? Primus sucks. (:)) This is album is a lot of fun to listen to. I don't know where they come up with this stuff, Ler in particular, but it's great! (2) Miranda Sex Garden _Suspiria_ Wow. Once I really got into this album (read: I listened to it once while at school and decided that it was so good that I spent the next few days with it) I realized what a gem it really is. Wondeful stuff! (3) Dinosaur Jr _Where You Been_ This album caught me completely off-guard. Maybe it's because I didn't own any Dino Jr before this album or maybe because it really is different from their other work. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised to hear chimes, tympani, strings used very, well, dare I say, intelligently. Probably the surprise of the year for me. (4) Happy Rhodes _Equipoise_ If nothing else, this album belongs in my top ten for the simple fact that inspired me to write a short story based on "Cohabitants." But that's neither here nor there (it's where it is) because there is much in the way of wonderful music to be found here. (5) Rush _Counterparts_ After some disappointment with _Roll The Bones_ I was a little unsure of what to expect from this one. But my fears were calmed soon enough (after the first few seconds). _Counterparts_ is quite good, but not wonderful. It's certainly less showy then they have been in the past and certainly steps *WAY* beyond the line of coventional rock. (6) Pearl Jam _Vs_ My first listening of this album (in a friend's dorm room while reading mail) proved to be incorrect. My original disappointment changed vastly after a few close listenings and I like _Vs_ a lot now. Better than _ten_? I don't know...different. (7) Animaniacs A friend of mine found this by chance and after hearing some of it in his car (and knowing the show as I do) I realized that I must own a copy for myself. After picking apart the store he found it in, I managed to locate a copy. I'll just say that the tape is just like the show -- great! (8) Belly _Star_ Another album to overcome a certain amount of odds stacked against it (namely, I had not heard good things about Belly from my friends, plus the wondering doubt as to what's in store for Throwing Muses (whom I like a great deal)) I find that _Star_ is somewhat addictive, I kind of have to make myself listen to something else or I'll keep listening to it. (9) Black 47 _Fire of Freedom_ Not much to be said about this one, it's a good show, not great, but has signs of promise. It's funny, sad, angry and beautiful. (10) Cocteau Twins _Four-Calendar Cafe_ This one's still fairly new to me so I'm somewhat at a loss as to what to say about it. It seems like it will similar to _Heaven or Las Vegas_ *only* in the fact that it took me several listenings over a period of time before I really got into HoLV and I can see a nearly identical future for _4-CC_. ----Honorable Mentions (in no particular order)---- (1) Bjork _Debut_ It's fun to listen in it's variety but I'm not one for techno/dance/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. (2) Kate Bush _The Red Shoes_ I *really* like approximately half of TRS. There are a couple of other songs that are ok, but pale in front of the really good ones, and a couple of other songs that really do not do anything positive for me. (3) Depeche Mode _Songs of Faith and Devotion_ I was pleasantly surprised by this one as well, most of the songs I *really* like but there are a few that aren't as good. (4) PJ Harvey _Rid of Me_ I'm not sure what to say about this one other than I like it, but not love it. (5) Anything I've forgotten. :) ----Still Planning to Buy---- Nirvana _In Utero_ Fugazi _In on the Killtaker_ Smashing Pumpkins _Siamese Dream_ Cranberries _Everyone Else etc..._ Sarah McLachlan _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ and anything I've forgotten. :) needless to say the purchase of any of those albums could alter the line-up of the bottom half of my top ten (the top 4 or 5 are pretty much set) but I didn't want to wait any longer in doing this, so that's how it turned out. This is long enough as it is so....bye until next time. "There's no basis for any of this--it's absurd." -- Neil Peart -- (taken horribly out of context, but placed in the context of my top ten it still fits :) ) Kevin Calm Down. Well, I'm back in New Haven with a delete key again. In a few short days I will again be near-computerless, so I'm going to enjoy this while I still can. Just a few notes: As woj already noted, Camelot Records can be a dangerous place. They have pretty good cutout bins. I came away on Saturday with, among other things, Eurythmics _1984_, Sugarcubes _Stick Around For Joy_, Genesis _Trespass_, a strange compilation of Byzantine secular music that I'm not at all sure what to make of, Wendy MaHarry _Fountain of Youth_, the import CD single of Cranberries "Linger" (the non-album tracks, not surprisingly, sound exactly like everything else Cranberries have released, but I like that one song they keep rehashing, so it's fine with me- I call it Sundays/Innocence Mission syndrome, but that's another story :), and Innocence Mission _Umbrella_. With the exception of the Cranberries single and the Wendy MaHarry, all of those albums were ones which I had been meaning to get on CD for some time, and the price was finally right. Let me just say, though, that Camelot employees are idiots. The store had Sarah McLachlan filed in the Folk section, and of course when I brought this to the attention of the nearest flunkie with a name tag I got nothing more than a blank look. "Sarah who? I have no clue who that is. She has to be folk, or she wouldn't be filed there. It's the way the company wanted us to do it." When I informed him that this was the first Camelot I'd ever seen her filed under folk at, I got an even blanker look. "Dunno. I have no clue who you're talking about." I told him that that was no surprise to me, since I'd never met a Camelot employee who knew jack sh*t about music, and that was that. (Apologies to any Camelot employees who may be reading this- please, show me at least one exception to this rule and I'll be happy!) woj and I spent a great deal of Saturday night downloading various and sundry gifs from the net. Martin Dougiamas, for a 77-year-old cello instructor, is remarkably well-preserved! :> I now also have faces to attach to the names Brian Bloom and Christine Waite (though I think I met Christine before, come to think of it). Brian, you look exactly like one of my college hallmates! Like, exactly. It was spooky to see your picture and realize that. :) In the You Never Know Where Things Will Turn Up Dept.: I loaned a tape of the most recent Champagne Jam to one of my co-workers, who is a child of Top-40 culture (she's going to see Rod Stewart in concert next week and is thrilled to death about it :P) yet is willing to try new things. She listened to it over the long weekend, and this morning reported that she just couldn't handle Tori Amos (though I will admit that "Precious Things" is a dangerous introduction at best :) and she hadn't been able to pay close attention to much else, but she did know that she thought Margot Smith and Ashley Maher were awesome, and where can she find their albums? :) But wait, this is the good part. She went on to relate that over the weekend she went to the mall shopping, and while browsing in Express (I'm-too-fashion- able-for-my-lingerie clothing store) she happened to notice that she recogniz- ed the song that was playing over the system. She couldn't believe that it was a song she had just been listening to in the car, and when she got back into her car she searched through the tape and sure enough, that was the one: "Laughter In The Rain", by Ashley Maher. She's 100% positive this was the one she heard. Now, some of you may remember Anthony Kosky mentioning in these pages that Ashley Maher's discs have now both been deleted in England and were never released in the U.S. ... I am *really* curious as to how one of her songs ended up on an in-store tape in a mall in Trumbull, Connecticut!!! I think I might give them a call tomorrow, but I'm not expecting anything more than silence followed by "Um, I dunno, I never pay attention to what's playing in here" on the other end. Still, You Never Know. woj and I discovered this weekend that Pier 1 Imports, which stores are usually playing interesting music, sends out monthly tapes to its stores from their company headquarters in Texas, unlabeled except for "December Tape " or "January Tape" etc. so if customers inquire after something they just heard to an employee, chances are they'll be out of luck in getting an answer. We now think it would behoove us to find the location of this head- quarters office, figure out who is in charge of making the tapes, then conven- iently off him or her and take over the position, being sure to label each and every tape and putting lots of Happy on each one. Any Texophiles willing to help us find the elusive Pier 1 front offices? Meredith the zoned meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 3 Jan 94 20:34:40 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: The Piano More spoiler alerts - don't read unless you've seen the Piano or don't care, although if you don't care, why would you read it anyway. I would agree that the ending seemed a bit tacked on. It was just there and didn't seem to add anything to the movie or give a sense of completion. >>I would have to say she did it intentionally, for it was her will that >>chose life--much to her surprise. Sorry Jeff, I'm not sure what your saying, but I think I'm disagreeing. I felt like the foot in the rope was definitely an accident. Never crossed my mind otherwise (could be saying something about me there). I thought throwing away the piano was a symbolic freeing of herself from the life she had led, where the piano was the focus of her life, and instead starting over with Harvey Keitel. Maybe she would have considered it, but I don't think she was thinking about it clearly enough to make it intentional. Her decision to free herself was intentional though. It seems like the foot in the rope was a choice between life and death, where life was the default, while freeing herself from the rope was a choice between life and death with death as the default. I think she was willing to accept life, rather than actively seek death, and in fact showed herself to be willing to actively struggle for life (although it was certainly in doubt for a while). I don't even remember a scene where the daughters skates are cut off. If I try real hard, I can maybe come up with something fuzzy about a sleeping girl having her skates removed. Remind me what you are thinking and maybe elaborate a bit. I don't know what to make of the angel wings. I didn't think of the girl as being particularly angelic, but I also did see her as being evil enough for that to be a sarcastic comment. I guess I could try to stretch it a little bit either way, but they both seem like stretches to me. I guess since the whole play scene seemed completely contrived and just there for the joke of having the Maori run up and get upset, it's possible that the angel wings have little relevance (or maybe I'm just dense). Kristin Hersh, ex-Throwing Muses, has a new album coming out in a couple weeks, called "Hips and Makers." All I can say is, "WOW"! This is an amazing piece of work. I seriously doubt that it will make her an MTV pop queen like her former bandmate Tanya Donnelly, but it is wonderful nonetheless. OK, I'll try to say a little bit more than "wow" :-) Most of the tracks are acoustic guitar and voice only, although cellist Jane Scarpantoni (who played on Bob Mould's "Workbook" album) crops up as well. Michael Stipe duets with Kristin on a haunting number called "Your Ghost." Lenny Kaye produced. Here's the track listing: Your Ghost / Beestung / Teeth / Sundrops / Sparky / Houdini Blues / A Loon / Velvet Days / Close Your Eyes / Me and My Charms / Tuesday Night / The Letter / Lurch / Cuckoo / Hips and Makers.
