To start this out (because I'm so lazy) here's a post that went to the Sundays mailing list about Hex. I've unsubscribed from that mailing list so I don't know if there were any followups to it. *I* have a followup to it but since I'm off that list, it'll go here. It belongs here anyway. (Btw, I unsubscribed from there because I got tired of the attitude shown about music there. I'm so glad Ecto's not like that.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: WretchAwry Loves: Kate Bush..Happy Rhodes..Jane Siberry..Peter Gabriel..Tori Amos.. The only album I've ever heard > of is their debut, entitled "Vast Halos." Just a quick mention that Hex has an album before "Vast Halos" just called "Hex" from 1989. I like both albums, the first one is my favorite. Personally, Danielle Dax is the last person I'd think of to compare Donnette's voice. Donnette has a very ethereal, lush and beautiful voice, while Danielle's voice is hard-edged and razzy (which I love, and which fits her songs perfectly.) Might I ask what you heard by either woman to prompt the comparison? I have everything by both artists and could listen myself for what you're hearing. C-3G, Salem, MA 01970 Hex still exists, though Steve Kilby is no longer associated with the band. It never was just Steve Kilby's band. Donnette wrote too and shared the writing credits with Kilby. Now the band is completely hers and I'm looking forward to their new "era." A new album may be out sometime next year. I know the band's new bass player and he's promised to keep me updated. We hadn't checked it for quite a while, so things were piling up. There were lots of nice Christmas cards from Ectophiles (*Thank YOU* *HUG*) and a Christmas card from Happy & Kevin (along with some Happy CDs to replace ones I've given away) and a wonderful package from my old friend Mike Lindsay. Quick history/reminder: Mike used to work at a record store in Kansas City (along with being a roadie/sound guy for bands such as the Psychowelders, and trying to make it as a musician himself) and he turned me on to some of my favorite music. Through Mike, I first heard The Innocence Mission (months before their first album was released), Mary Coughlin, Yma Sumac and many many more. After we moved to Chicago, he decided to move to Los Angeles and get serious about looking for work in a band. He did just fine, as far as I'm concerned, because he is now the bass player for Hex!! Included in the package he sent is a tape of 6 new Hex songs! They're dubs, it's not an "official" tape, but they sound great and if these songs are an indication of what the entire album (they're working on) is like....WOW! I always liked Hex, but they seemed a bit uneven to me. Without being familiar with Steve Kilby's work, but listening to these songs, I'd guestimate that everything I really liked about Hex was Donnette's doing, and everything I didn't like was Steve's doing (no offence to Kilby fans) but I really can't say for sure. All I know is that I just love all these songs, Donnette's voice is as beautiful and ethereal as ever, there are no harsh synthcussion sounds and I can't wait for the album to be finished and released. I'll of course keep Ecto updated. The songs on here are "Sleepwalker," "My Room," "Gabriel," "Earthly Powers," "Strange Eden," and "Other Winds." Hex is now, truly, Donnette Thayer's band, and it's clear to me now that she *definitely* was more than just a "singer" for Steve Kilby. She's a good songwriter in her own right. Hex isn't (for me) a "Top Tier" band, but they're certainly an apostle group. :-) I'd recommend the 2 albums out already, and this one too, when it's released. Hooray for my friend Mike, to be working with Donnette Thayer!! Yay! Until Hex really gets going again, with a record contract and album release, he's got himself a "day job" at a record store (but damn, I can't remember which one) and he also sent in the package a bunch of things he thought I might like. He knows me well :-) because included is Stina's "Memories Of A Color" (which he wrote was his "Pick Hit of the week!"), Kirsty MacColl's "Titanic Days," Holly Cole's "Don't Smoke In Bed," and Shelleyan Orphan's "Waking Up" compilation. Also included (he said that if I didn't like them at least I'd know what they sounded like) was Mary Karlzen "Mary Karlzen" (which I'm listening to now, and I quite like...it's very Shawn Colvin, Robin Holcomb-ish), Casey Scott "Creep City" (which I yanked out of the CD player during the 2nd song, but I'll listen to the whole thing before I use it as a frisbie), The Point "Fingernoid Slink," Iza Trojanowski "Independence" (which I think I already have, I'll have to check. Woj mentioned this one before, I think), The Basics "When I Close My Eyes," and The Nields "66 Hoxsey Street." I love goodies! They're so much fun! * Vickie is *happy* * Vickie obnimaet Ectophiles! ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 29 Dec 93 22:38:36 PST From: dixon@physics.berkeley.edu (David Dixon) Subject: Re: When the rain came down... This is an odd kind of question, but curiosity is about to kill this Happy Cat. :) Last March or so, I was full swing into finding the joys of Happy Rhodes, singing tunes of hers everywhere I went. When my sister asked me what I was singing *all* the time, I smugly stuck my nose in the air, confident that I could give a reply that would prove that I was utterly more worldly in the realm of music. I was *sure* that she had never heard of Happy Rhodes. To my utter shock, my sister, the same person who considers Erasure as far out of the mainstream as she can manage, replied, "Oh, she's that woman with a huge range who writes and sings her own songs, isn't she? Yeah, she's not really very known, right?" My jaw fell through the floor and down into the basement of the restaurant in amazement. After prying a bit, I discovered that she had met a woman at one of the medical schools where she was interviewing (was it Wash U?) who was a devoted fan of Happy's. Whoever this person was, she writes and sings her own songs and claimed that she was inspired by a fairly-unknown artist by the name of Happy Rhodes. Anyway, I thought that was *really* cool, and I've kept that story tucked in the back of my mind. Now I wonder whether that same person is here on the list?? Anybody think s/he knows this mystery woman? In any case, it's a warming thought to know that there *are* people out there in many walks of life who are inspired and touched by Happy. :) In other Happy news, I have to gloat a little on how *easy* it is to spread Happy-ism all over the place. I've made it a habit of mine that whenever I'm back home in Texas to do a little PR for Happy. This started out last summer quite innocently when I was searching for her cds in local music stores. And I must say that if you're looking for horrid selection in music, the place to go is College Station, Texas! After asking whether her cds were carried here and there, it turns out that all of the places I checked placed orders for at least 2-3 of her cds in response to the "many requests" they were receiving. Happily, all but a couple of them had been sold by the time I returned home for the holidays. This time at home I noticed few interesting facts: 1) I've already developed a musical reputation ("Hey, weren't you just asking about Happy Rhodes a while back? We ordered 4 of her cds but somebody else already bought them...") and 2) Happy's name is now beginning to be known at least by the people working in stores ("Happy Rhodes? That's just one woman, right? Spell that r-h-o-d-e-s...yeah, I've looked this up before" or "yeah, I've, uh, ... heard of her...yeah, she's cool"). If nothing else, she's now thought of as someone they *should* be aware of. But the triumph of triumphs came today when I talked to the "coolest" local store's owner/manager. I asked about ordering discs by someone "you've never heard of, I'm sure" (ha ha, that peaks the interest of any musical snob!). After assuring me that unknown to most is not unknown to him and hearing the name Happy Rhodes, he proceeded to show great interest in a conversation about her, claiming to know a bit about her. In the end, I was certain that the name would stick with him (and this is quite a feat to include Happy as one of the artists to keep track of in the mind the most musically influential individual in town!). AND, after hearing all the glowing recommendations I couldn't help but make, the 4 people in line after me ALL ordered Happy cds!! Anyway, somehow it felt nice to know that in one college town where good music is usually synonymous with Garth Brooks and Debbie Gibson, Happy Rhodes can be found in stores where her name had never been known before. And I'm keeping count--as far as I can tell, there have been at least 15 Happy sales in the last 3 months. :) Granted, they are small steps, but steps nonetheless.... Finally, I should point out that cassette tapes are a helluva lot more durable than I might have imagined. I was meekly approached by my mother this morning who told me that somehow (this still baffles me!) one of my tapes had been thrown in the laundry, washed throughly, and even stuck in the dryer. Ah the joys of coming home for the holidays!! After nearly keeling over when I found that this was my tape with Sarah on one side and the Cranberries on the other, I waited for it to dry a bit, stuck it in my ancient walkman to see what would happen, and it seems to still play *perfectly*. Wow! I'd like to see a cd do that!! Or is it just that good music is eternal?? :) Enough rambling for today... Hugs and thoughts of furry little cozy kittens by fireplaces to anyone who wants them!! Lisa :) aka Happy Cat <*meow*> ps-I'll be smug and also point out that visiting nowheresville has its good points--I have now purchased Sarah and Tribe cds for $4 a piece. :) ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 30 Dec 93 03:09:37 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (mineswept) Subject: a long winter's nap earlier tonight around 8:30pm, i decided to take a short nap. i should know better than that - short naps aren't part of my vocabulary. six hours later, i find that i am still tired but i dragged myself out of bed since there's stome stuff i probably should get taken care sooner or later. but first, as always, it's time for another ectopost. In the Greenwich Village area, I go: Rebel Rebel (Bleecker, between Grove and Christopher) Lots of used discs, imports, singles, vinyl, posters, etc. He sells both the Lioness at Heart and Never Forever boxes (+ This Woman's Work, of course). I just got Sarah McLaughlin Live there for $8.00. He has a lot of dance music as well. I got several very good quality "imports" here. This store is slightly larger (but still relatively small). They have all the usual suspects (Kate, Tori, Sarah, Jane, Peter...) plus a lot of dance music and rock as well. These are my two favorites, but if you need more in the area, try Disc-o-rama (all discs $9.99 [except imports]) on West 4th, or Second Hand Rose's (many used discs) on 14th at 6th Avenue. There's also Second Coming Records on Sullivan between Waverly and West 3rd, and Rocks In Your Head on Prince (or is it Spring). If you want someone to guide you on your way, Email me.
