Well, after all this talk about automating the digest process, etc..... Off I go to California for USENIX, planning to be logged in before anyone would know it.. But (of course) some neccessary piece of networking hardware died while they were setting up the terminal room, so i had no net access at all 'til today! yuck. My sincere apologies to you all. I am sending these outin approx 900 line chunks (since some people will have over 1000 lines cut off). There are 4 digests on their way (the last is only about 600 lines). At least one of the things I've learned of here already is a very nice (sounds that way anyway, I'll chekc into it when I get back) piece of mailing-list-maintenance software called majordomo. :):) I should be on-line regularly for the rest of the week, so hopefully we are back to normal. :) ALSO, A VERY SERIOUS NOTE ABOUT VICKIE'S POSTS: Vickie asked me to place her posts into the ftp-able archives instead of sending them out as Digests. This is what I will do. For those of you who can not ftp and would like to receive them, let me know, I will mail them to you. If you can ftp, they will be in the normal place, as Digest.Vickie. ---jessica ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1993 12:39:18 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Hey, Terry *Many* Happy returns of the day! My backlog of still-unplayed acquisitions being what it is, I'm not sure I can isolate my 10 favorites among 1992 releases I've actually listened to to date :-). So instead, I'll cough up an enumeration of my 10 favorite recordings-- unranked, and undifferentiated not only by release date, but by genre, either --which I either acquired _de novo_ (a specification meant to screen out CD duplicates of titles I already owned on tape) in 1992, or which I took deliv- ery of after the first of the year but were actually sent out to me before that point in time. And thus, in no particular order: Eden Atwood, _Today!_ Tom Robinson (& band), _Back in the Old Country_ Suzanne Vega, _99.9 Fahrenheit Degrees_ Jade Warrior, _Last Autumn's Dream_ Sophie B. Hawkins, _Tongues and Tails_ Mae Moore, _Bohemia_ Lost and Profound, _Lost and Profound_ Garrison Keillor, _Songs of the Cat_ Carly Simon, _Playing Possum_ The Story, _Grace in Gravity_ Needless to say, the selection of these particular ones is not to disparage any of those that would have ended up in positions 11 thru N, had I set out to go on the record as to my N favorites as opposed to my 10 favorites. If noth- ing else, next year's version of this task promises to be at least 10 percent easier, what with _Equipoise_ more or less guaranteed to soak up approximately that proportion of the variance :-). As I read the longer of Vickie's posts in today's incoming, it gave me an odd sense of reassurance to be dethroned as the master craftsman of run-on senten- ces in these pages. If I can ever figure out which pile my copy of _Last Exit to Brooklyn_ is buried under, I'll be able to measure Vickie's screed against what is thus far generally regarded as the longest single sentence ever pub- lished in American English, to determine whether she's succeeded in dethroning Hubert Selby as well :-). As I write this, it is still January 22 in the United States. As such, I feel I'm still on sound ground in wishing a happy birthday to Terry Partis, a man arguably on the leading edge of the pre-Generation X generation on ecto :-). Besides a massively stiff neck from sitting with bad posture at a computer all day and then coming home to the daily barrage of e-mail, I acquired two CD singles this evening. Since I NEVER spend money for these things, preferring instead to snag them from the radio station when doubles come in or the Music Director deems them unworthy for the rack and I'm lucky enough to be there when it happens, I figured they merited mention here. 10,000 Maniacs: "Candy Everybody Wants": "CEW" is really one of my least favorite songs on _Our Time In Eden_ (the charm of the horns was quick to rub off), but I'd heard good things about the covers included there, so I decided to spring for it (the price wasn't too bad, either). IMO their version of "Everyday Is Like Sunday" is far superior to the Smith's version, and the other two, "Sally Ann" and REM's "Don't Go Back To Rockville" are nice, too. Mary Ramsey (of John and Mary fame) plays violin on the last two tracks. The Sugarcubes, "Birthday": I have NO clue why I bought this. I avoid remixes like the plague. Maybe it was the adventure of exploring what three people managed to do to one of my all-time favorite songs. I doubt it. This is worth it for the inclusion of the original Icelandic demo version, which sounds like it was recorded in Einar's boudoir (and probably was). I might tape this track and sell the CD5- anybody want a collection of bad "Birthday" remixes? (WHY are the Sugarcubes releasing all these remixes of their stuff????????????) I also received a copy of Tori Amos' US "Winter" CD5 earlier in the week, thanks to a friend who spends every available lunch break in the New York Tower Records and could thus take advantage of the sale. I can't remember if I mentioned that here already- I am very excited to have "Take To The Sky", "The Pool", and "Sweet Dreams" on CD (and "Upside Down" for the second time :)- with LYRICS!!!! I leave you all with one piece of advice: if you are trying to get tickets for a concert at a small concert hall out of town and the box office there tells you tickets are available at Strawberries, DON'T BELIEVE THEM. You'll end up coming out with CDs you shouldn't have bought and no more tickets than when you started. :} Meredith Tarr meth@aol.com "Crusher gets more shrill with each passing year." -Q ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 22 Jan 93 18:25:14 PST From: stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: WOMAD(elaide) Martin Dougiamas opines: >Hmmm... The mysterious warblings draw comparisons to Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance--and with its third U.S. album, Bel Canto is overdue for recognition in the same gothic- art crowd. the techno-primitive tracks use Norwegian folk melodies, chromium synthesizer arrangements, sampled percussion, and ethnic strings such as hammered dulcimers and ouds evoking Moorish rhythms. Anneli Drecker spins her voice--unquestionably bel canto--with Arabic ornamentation on "Le Temps Degage," in music that hovers between dervish and dance-floor. Mike Mendelson sez: >Re: Graham Parker >I own a live CD that he put out a few years ago. that would be _live! alone in america_, yes? i agree - it's a fantastic album and it's all acoustic. usually, i don't like his work with a full band as much as this solo stuff...but there are a few that i've really enjoyed as well. >As an avid digester of ecto digests, I can say only that so far, so good. as a digested ecto reader, i'd like at least one digest per day at a min- imum. it's easier to keep up to date with you folks that way. then again, this is a moot point now with jessica back in control. :) Neile Graham sez: >Here's my real 1992 list in no particular order: > Ingrid Karklins - A Darker Passion yay! she tops my list as well. > Throwing Muses - Red Heaven ugh. i was really disappointed by this. i expected kristen to continue with the sound she established on _the real ramona's_ "hooks in her head" and instead, she sorta meandered in to a musically boring power chord thing. yuck. >Honorable Mentions: Mecca Normal - Dovetail yay! i know this is inaccurate and misleading, but i like to refer to mecca normal as billy bragg's retarded sister (though jean smith is by no means a retard and by no means is mecca normal a single person). this is great album of poignant, pointed tunes done is a kind of lofi, simple guitar'n'screeching manner. i love this! >Moe Moore - Bohemia that's mae. :) she's great too, though i've only heard those four songs i mentioned way back when. i gotta get this album one of these days. it is on epic in canada, so maybe it is available easily in the states as well. Mike Mendelson sez: >Dolby's debut, Wireless, is great, but TFE is brilliant. oh, yes! i almost *never* listen to any dolby album except _the flat earth_ (on audiophile collector's vinyl no less). i still don't like ending the album with "hyperactive" since it's such a jolt, but the rest of it is pure genius. every song is...is...i dunno...it's just a near perfect album. that's all... >Now, about Aliens. _aliens_ threw me for a loop when it was first released (though i must say that i had a lot of fun singing along to "airhead" when i played it on the radio - we'd sing the names of sororities as a call and response - this often did calls and response from the listeners as well!). it's not a bad album, by any stretch, but it's a drastic change for dolby considering the pop sensibilities of the first album and the sublime genius of the second. i like it now, but as i said, rarely listen to it. klaus@inphobos.w.open.de (Cosmic Vagabond) sez: >Vickie mentioned: >> My friend Scott lent me the new Love Spirals Downward album and >A couple of weeks ago I already tried to find something from this >band, with no success. it's probably difficult to come by in any chain store. some smaller, independent stores might carry it. the best way to obtain this is to order it directly from projekt records. their address is projekt po box 1591 garden grove, ca 92642-1591 usa the cost of the disc is $14 with an additional $5 postage for overseas locations. >> agree with it.
