(hey is it a collector's item???). And YES, I totally agree that The Flat Earth was EXCELLENT. The only Dolby I don't have now is 'Aliens Ate My Buick' .... I sold it I think... couldn't get into it. 'Astronauts and Heretics' is enjoyable but hasn't gripped me. I do love the Cajun stuff on it, though. I enjoyed the Dolby track on Toys so much, I bought the soundtrack! Good to get the Tori Amos track too. Anyhoo... here I am on the Ecto list (Thanks Jessica and Vickie). Ummm ... people here seem to know each other really well... how DO I introduced myself? I've only heard Happy's Warpaint. It's EXCELLENT!!. What can I do to get her stuff into the shops here in Canada? I really want her other stuff. I'm horribly lazy though and will never get around to writing so is there a PHONE NUMBER so I could place an order? I'm a big Kate Bush fan .. been following her since the late '70s. Rec.Music.Gaffa has been a godsend for me not only in KT information but also for the intro to new artists. Been following Loreena McKennett since '89. I've seen her in concert twice here in Ottawa (pls, Meredith don't bang your head again!!).. excellent live performer. I have the original pressing of the divine Sarah's first album. as well as Solace. I still prefer her original version of Vox to the remixed one on the re-released first album. She too had a supurb concert here in Ottawa in '91. Other artists I enjoy (to name a few): Peter Gabriel (I like So better than US, Mercy Street is brilliant) Tori Amos (a mind-blower live!!) Single Gun Theory Enya Clannad Sam Brown Dead Can Dance Cocteau Twins U2 Danielle Dax. Kate and Anna Mcgarricle (sic??) ... oh the list is too large ... RE: Fairground Attraction. When I was in the UK for 4 months in '88 I remember hearing 'Perfect' ALL THE TIME, EVERYWHERE. (Auuuggghhh the chorus will never die in the back of my mind...) Catchy little tune. I don't think it got much of a look-in here in Canada.... at least, I've never heard the song since I left the UK. If any of you are Diamanda Galas fans, there is a full-scale interview with her in the RE/SEARCH book 'Angry Women'. I've yet to hear anything she's done. Anybody catch the eMpTV Inaugural Ball last night? It was quite amusing- Tabitha Soren and the rest of the team looking SO pleased with themselves, Dennis Miller being an a**h*l* as always, and lots of bad music. With the exception of 10,000 Maniacs' appearance, that is... and of course Michael Stipe came onstage for that, and proceeded to entirely decimate "Candy Everybody Wants" while Natalie twirled around behind him. (They didn't do badly with "To Sir With Love", though.) He was looking really bad, too- like he's either severely malnourished or seriously ill. I hope neither. Dennis Miller introduced the Maniacs as "Chelsea's favorite band". Hey- the kid's got taste!!! :> But far and away the best moment of the evening was watching Tipper Gore deal with standing onstage at a MTV function, followed immediately by Soul Asylum. I almost died. I mean, I love Bill Clinton and think he's going to be great for the country, but I'll be counting the days until Tipper Dearest is as far away from a position of power as possible. The woman isn't Jesse Helms in a dress, but she comes close. Sorry for spouting that here. I really wanted to mention the Maniacs appearance, which was great to see. Natalie looked great, too- for once she was wearing something that did something for her. Later... For much of the day, I have been listening to NPR's feed of Zoe Baird's confir- mation hearing. It seems that they have finally chosen to talk about something besides her earlier choice of childcare providers. Still, the whole thing has jarred loose from memory the following few lines of classic doggerel: SHOULD I WRITE A LETTER TO MY CONGRESSMAN? by E.Y. Harburg Should I write a letter to my congressman? Each congressman has two ends, A sitting and a thinking And since his whole success depends upon his seat, Why bother, friend? BTW: For all that, I _did_ contact the offices of both Senators Simon and Moseley-Braun, asking to be tallied with the pro-Baird minority among those citizens bothering to send in their sentiments on the issue. On a matter at most tangentially related: Thanks to Steve V. for revealing the true origins of the Monty Python theme. It is ironic, in retrospect, that the BBC would reach to these shores for brass band music, given the volume of it that was composed locally. It is equally curious that NPR, on a couple of different programs after Harry Shearer's mention of it, played recordings of it without revealing what it actually was.
