Talked to Kevin for just a minute and he said that their cat Shorty had a kidney removed yesterday! I've never heard of that with a cat before. Shorty's all shaved and bandaged but seems to be doing ok. I *know* how much Happy's cats mean to her (they really are like family) so I wanted to pass along that news, because it's important to Happy. Jokey, thanks for the information and I certainly hope the interview works out. I imagine it will. Hmmm, doesn't Happy have a wonderful speaking voice? I just love it. About talking to her...she's my friend but sometimes my brain goes into "MY GOD, this is HAPPY RHODES I'm talking to!!" mode and I have to struggle to get back into "talking to my friend Happy" mode. I totally adore her and I have gushed at her tons of times. She just waits till I'm finished and says thanks and then asks me about my cats or something completely mundane. :-) I am so tired! I've been working on the Ecto Sig and it's *SO* much stranger than I originally thought it was going to be. There are things going on with it that are downright spooky...it's seeming to put itself together, and in ways I never thought of. It's certainly turned out totally, no, make that *TOTALLY* different than I originally planned. I can't give details, because I still have a couple of things to do, but you'll hear about it soon enough. There have been 4 different Ecto SiGs so far, and the one that went on tape earlier this evening is not at all what I assumed would end up there. I can't talk about it without talking about it, and I can't talk about it, so I'll drop it. I just know that as soon as I have the CDs in my hand (yes John, that's at least 2 sets gone so far :-) ) I'll wish I had waited for the CDs to do the show. No, I'm not waiting, but my tapes of the 1st4 vary so much in quality (both copies of Rhodes Vol.I have lopsided levels, with Happy singing into one ear exclusively in the song "Possessed") that it certainly would sound better. The quality variation comes mainly from playing them about a thousand times each, so it's my own fault..... The only time I ever backed up my tapes is once when I put the 1st4 onto videotape, but I ended up using the videotape for something else. SiG-of-the-month club is one step closer to reality thanks to Doug Burks. He has offered to do the dubbing for me. I would send a tape to him, you would send tapes to him and he'd dub my show onto your tape and send it back to you. The deatils need to be worked on. I don't know how long it will last and I don't think Doug knows what he's gotten himself into :-) but stay tuned for the fine-tuning. I'll let Doug post his ideas about the Central Bank of Ecto...(he'll tell you) and see what workable plan we all can come up with. Barry, I don't think one a day is feasable :-) (though I certainly have enough to keep going for quite a few months) but I personally don't think that once a month is enough. I have so much music that twice a month would be ideal, but we'll see. After Doug posts perhaps we can get an idea of how many people will want to be involved on a regular basis. I don't want Doug to be overwhelmed, and I want the music to get out too. I'm torn between discouraging this (for Doug's sake) and encouraging everyone, just to spread the music. Project In Progress... watch for falling thoughts! Turn Ecto into a newsgroup? I am totally against it. I used to think it was a good idea, but now I shudder at the thought mainly because there are too many people like Cynthia out there who just itch to get into flamewars and insult other people. I know one thing for absolute certain, and that's that I'd never post a "Here comes my soul again..." type post if we were a newsgroup. I won't do it in gaffa anymore, and the only reason I do it here is because I feel "safe" in the warm fuzzy environment of Ecto. I agree that this is very much a "family" atmosphere and it should be protected and nurtured. Still, I'm very curious about this whole thing. Keep us posted Jessica. Say Martin, the Les Rita Mitsouko song is something like "C'est Comme Ca" and yes, the video is truly wild.I love it, and it's how I first heard of the group. Meredith, I loved your essay on net-communications. I agree with you completely, it's hard to explain to people who aren't part of the net what it's all about and how you can get very close to people without ever having met them. Sometimes it's impossible to even try (for me) and I end up mumbling "you had to be there" when talking about Ecto and all I get are blank stares and long silences. Vickie Tip for the day: *Always* remove the tabs from cassettes that you don't want to be accidentally recorded on. :-( I'll tell you about it one of these days... ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 21:15:16 -0500 From: Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn Subject: ig I think the idea of turning ecto into a newsgroup is a _bad_ idea. I too like the community atmosphere too much to see it destroyed by certain 'flamethrowers.' If a person is interested in Happy they are going to find out about the mailing list from mentioning it on Gaffa and elsewhere. Ecto as a mailing list works for me, a and though there are certain advantages of exposure via a newsgroup something vital would be lost... I have heard a few songs off the new Cowboy Junkies album. While I am not a fan of theirs the songs were decent sounding enough. The album appears to be quite popular in Canada....getting exposure on Canadian radio stations. kIrI ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 26 Jan 92 12:38:05 -0500 From: sae@cmpsci.suffolk.edu (Sam Alan Ezust) Subject: the "ecto" mail alias A number of universities discourage "direct" subscriptions to mailing lists. This is because when student accounts are deleted and the lists are not unsubscribed, it is quite a headache for sysadmins to track down moderators of newsgroups and unsubscribe on behalf of the deleted students. Therefore, it is the policy of McGill (as well as a few other universities) to require all list-subscribers to apply for subscription via a local sys-admin, who creates the mail alias, keeps on file the name and mail address of the moderator, and then adds the student subscriber to the alias. If at a later point another person from the same university wants to subscribe, he/she is added to that alias list. So at the moment, there are mail aliases @cs.mcgill.ca for nm-list, other-voices, dominion and cloud-zero (all due to my instigation), and our sysadmin sent mail as nm-list@cs.mcgill.ca to the actual moderator of nm-list requesting subscription. It turned out that I was the only nm-list subscriber at that site for most of the time, but eventually others followed my lead. I think that there was never more than 3 people on that mail alias at once. So my point is: it is not necessarily being fed into a newsgroup on that site- it might just be a mail alias for one person at that site. So don't panic!!!!! -Alan Ezust sae@cmpsci.suffolk.edu ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 26 Jan 92 12:15:28 CST From: vishal@ra.csc.ti.com (Vishal Markandey) Subject: music Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn writes: > Vish writes: "or embarass visiting friends with Karen Finley's Lick it. > > Hmmm funny that. She is a performance artist and was in no end of trouble some time ago because of the controversial nature of her act!! I only have her EP "Lick It!" and I love it!! I don't care much for _Floodland_ and the later _Vision Thing_, but love their earlier stuff such as _First and last and always_, and a bunch of singles, and EPs. Very dark, gothic stuff. Ooops, I'm still here. 3) The last time I saw Vickie in Chicago (I don't understand this thread about what Vickie looks like... what prompted it?) (I thought he looked fine, BTW), she gave me a neat key chain and I gave her a 100 minute tape. I was wondering if whatever was supposed to be taped on that was done and whether I will get it some time. 4) I mailed Jeanne S. a tape a while ago and haven't heard from her since which prompts me to ask her whether she ever got it. Jeanne? 5) I have introduced at leasttwo friends to Happy's music in the last while and happily they both found copies of Warpaint. 6) What other concert plans does happy have? I noticed some mention of Albany... anything closer to the midwest in the works? It's great to have such easy access to an artist. Sure beats the kate grapevine. I've never heard _Vision Thing_ but since TSoM are just sort of a side interest for me I've never sought it out, either. Your last mention of them did prompt me to dig out my tape and listen to it; mostly I was sort of surprised that I still liked the tape, given that my musical tastes have changed since I last listened to _Floodland_ much. (For example, since then not only have I become completely infatuated with Kate Bush, but I have even learned to like _The Kick Inside_ and _Lionheart_ (what's so bad about _Lionheart, anyway?).) ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
