Re: Kits & Bibbles Re: Ode a serious question another more pleasant question :) ======================================================================== Date: 24 January 1992 13:22:01 CST From: Subject: Stoff II: Yin, Yang, and Somatypes and other stories Yesterday, with the memory of Len Barry's ("One, Two, Three" [circa 1966]) rattling around in my head (the result of having just renamed the file of yesterday's postings "HAPPY MAIL123" for archiving purposes, it being my custom to date them in that fashion), I got to thinking about Vickie's posting _in re_ body shapes, body images, self-images, etc. And the thought hit me that in a sense, we at ecto are singularly blessed with a kind of yin-yang balance between our two principal ecto-goddesses--one ectomorphic (Jessica), and the other endomorphic (Vickie). The only thing that could possibly improve on this happy state of cosmic symmetry could be if we could add a fulcrum, as it were, to the current bipolar configuration, to-wit: a mesomorphic ecto-goddess. Any ideas as to who would most optimally fill the bill? Self-nominations are acceptable. (It also occurs to me that the above is probably a good example of one of the things that make up the allure of ecto to me: I can be as uninhibited as I deem advisable about showing off the number of words I know, and nobody has yet expressed any overt perplexity in these pages about what I'm talking about. (Admittedly not a perfect indicator of a lack of actual perplexity on anyone's part, but the cockeyed optimism persists just the same :-).) In retrospect, it makes perfect sense that _Warpaint_ should be on the charts in Alaska (where in one town, according to yesterday's episode of _All Things Considered_, the sun rose yesterday for the first time since sometime in November of December). If one typically has to order recordings by mail anyway, the marginal aggravation of ordering from Aural Gratification, as opposed to Columbia House or Time-Life, probably doesn't seem like that big a deal. Just goes to show the Alaskans have good taste in these things. The world clearly has come a long way since Martin Mull recorded, "Buy our records through the mail/Get a set of lousy speakers/.../Let's you and I/Get normal for a change." My lead item reminds me of a thread in the soc.singles newsgroup last week, in which some fat was chewed :-(' [<--reaction to my own atrocious pun] in regards to somatypes and attraction. I went through it all so fast that I don't remember a lot of the details, but one poster admitted to being teddy-bear shaped, another observed that teddy bears are nice to hug, and out of New Zealand, The Leather Goddess (aka Lesley Walker) owned up to being shaped like Roseanne Barr. I didn't really notice at the time whether the ecto- and mesomorphs offered alternative perspectives on the whole thing. Chris' experiences regarding the role of nudism in his early socializa- tion might be an interesting thing to expound on in the rec.nude newsgroup. In a recent email to me, Court observed, "aren't cd players fun?" Since I, a diehard apostle of the magnetic media (after all, why pay $11.99 for a laser-pitted album when you can get it on red oxide for $6.99?), have never operated a cd player in my life, I can't speak to this firsthand. On the other hand, neither have I ever operated an edison cylinder player--sort of another example of the old yin-yang symmetry. As I have been writing this, the copy of a bunch of R.M.G. articles that I sent to the printer, only to have it disappear in the queue, so that I printed another one, has miraculously reappeared. So now I have two copies. I have not yet, obviously, had time to look carefully at the teapot tempest that's been brewing therein on "What is a Katefan"; but from what little I've already perused, it seems to confirm what occurred to me, in passing, a day or two before Christmas as I was taking the bus downtown to the cinema: if Gaffa is the Twin Peaks of music-related mailing lists and newsgroups, ecto is its Northern Exposure. (The Alaska connection injects itself yet again.) I noted with interest Martin's thoughts on the HGP tape, including his observation that I sound like I write. Nothing like being consistent. :-) The sound quality of his opening monolog seemed fine to me; nothing in his recording gave me any indication it was done on low-end equipment (which, in turn, may be an object lesson in how much money you can save by buying low-end equipment. :-) ) Of course, all this presupposes that the wavelike sounds in the background were, in fact, waves (presumably a sound endemic to the beach areas of coastal Australia), rather than oscillating white noise, static, 60-cycle hum, or other real or imagined sequellae of building up your audio armamentarium on the cheap. Just an update on my possible interview with Happy: Well, I called two days ago to talk to Kevin. He wasn't there, so guess who answered?! That's right, it was Happy. I must admit, I was so nervous. She probably could hear my voice quaking. Anyway, I called back yesterday and here's the thing...Most of her time is booked up. She's going to be at record stores (he didn't specify which ones) and the radio station all day Friday. Saturday is going to be real busy with setting up, the concert, and whatever else might follow. So, that leaves us with three possibilities. 1) They have a second show on Sunday. If they do this, then I can probably interview her then. 2) They might be coming to Philly in February to check out the auditorium, if so, I can interview her then. 3) I might go to Albany over my spring break and film her then. When I asked Kevin about filming the concert, or parts thereof, for other footage so the interview is not too boring visually, he sort of hesitated and decided we'd figure this out after we have the interview date straight. He'll call me next week with the info on the second concert and/or visit in Feb. I'll let you know what's going on if Vickie doesn't find out first. After I hear some of your opinions and ideas, i'll send some mail back asking for more details. The request was simply to be added to the list, and came from "ecto" @ a location i will not mention yet. Well, here is the request itself(address deleted): ----------------------------------------------- To: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu From: ecto@somewhere Subject: please subscribe Hi, Could you please add ecto@somewhere to the Happy Rhodes mailing list? Thanks. ----------------------------------------------- I thought that was really cute, getting ecto as a username, so I fingered the address to see if i could get more info about the person. (the request was not signed and didn't have a name in the header). The machine told me there was no username "ecto", so i figured the person made it a mail alias for wahtever reason. (still thinking it was to be cute:) So i checked it out, and it turns out the mail alias does this: 220 somewhere Sendmail 4.1/4.5asp/mh ready at Sat, 25 Jan 92 19:54:27 EST expn ecto 554 |/usr/local/lib/newsbin/mail2news jhucs.ecto"... Unbalanced '"' So it looks the person made a typo, but aside from that, it looks like the intent is to propogate the list to a local news/bb type thing. What do people think of that? When we reached about 70 people and the list was still quite active, the sysadmin of athos asked why we didn't make a newsgroup out of it. He thinks (even with the "no more new newsgroups about individual artists/bands" controversy that we could get enoguh votes. He's probably right. That was about when the subject came up anyway so I never mentioned it. It seemed like people are fairly happy with the list as a mailing list. it has an atmosphere that I (and it seems other) beleive would be damaged by a newsgroup environment. The list is of course entirely open to anyone who asks to join, but you do have to ask to join to get the messages. And the messages are available to anyone via ftp (more good news abtou that later) so access is compeltely uninhibted, but there aren't random posts from people who glance through the group but don't really care or have useful comments, and all the other sorts of things that come with a newsgroup. an advantage to a newsgroup: publicity. people might say "what's this rec.music.ecto" and discover happy's music that way. that would be a good thing - but i find the list gets mentioned often enough in gaffa and misc that we probably get enough publicity.. Anyway, the point is I'm not sure I like the idea of ecto being gatewayed into a newsgroup. I'm willing and intend to get more information before i make a decision - maybe there are several people at the site who are interested and thus they feel a local news group is more practical than all of them subscribing to the mailing list? maybe it's a gateway to a bbs where people who do not have internet accounts and/or email capabilities could have access to it. I think in either of those cases I'd say ok. If it's a gateway to a regular newsgroup (even if it's only local) i'm not sure I like the idea. But i'm not sure, and i'm wondering what other people's ideas are, too. jessica || jessica || It is this that || Don't try to tell me there's no reason for || || lawrence || brings us || any moment in time, every memory of mine. || || koeppel || together. || Those years are lines of color on my face, || || dembski || --Kate || the past is warpaint. --Happy Rhodes || ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 25 Jan 92 20:12:36 EST From: jessica@cs.rutgers.edu Subject: another more pleasant question :) Has anyone heard the new cowboy junkies album?
