Vickie, thanks for the suggestion of contacting Ed Suranyi. He told me where he saw Warpaint, and I will give those stores a try. If all goes well I'll have a copy after this coming weekend. As for Bel Canto, I wasn't really impressed with White Out Condtions the when I first bought it. It wasn't until after I had their 2nd album, which I liked on first hearing, that I started liking White Out Conditions. Just the opposite of your reaction. Greg, thanks for Ed's address. Klaus Kluge sez: >I assume 4AD put two albums on one CD. It contains 11 songs from >"house tornado" and 6 from "the fat skier". yup - the english pressing of _house tornado_ has those songs from _the fat skier_ (an ep which was the first release of the muse in america on sire records). so that cd you bought has two ocmplete releases on it klaus. >But I'll have to stop buying CDs for a while now, otherwise I don't have >a chance to listen to the latest ones properly. hah! do tell...i buy too many and catch up on the weekends for my listen- ing. there are those, though, who claim that i will never listen to every- thing that i have. course, if i stay employed that is true... ;) >No, the one I have is "Blast The Human Flower", a release from 1990, >which is pretty good. hmmm. i liked half of it. when she wasn't trying to be a pop goddess, it was worthwhile. then again, for the song "16 candles", any trashy album is worthwhile (which features anna palm on violin! yay!). >But I do have big problems with Diamanda Galas' >"you must be certain of the devil". the first time i heard diamanda, i ran screaming from the room. now i can handle her. she's disconcerting and that is intentional. keep trying and maybe eventually it will sink in. foster@magnum.convex.com (Harry Foster) sez: >I just heard your selection for the HGP, "KaTe" by the Sonny Sharrock >Band! (i answered this already in email, but for the rest of you...) the rest of the album is indeed this wonderful. sonny sharrock is a jazz fusion legend and i'm quite pleased to see him giving KaTe this kind of tribute (though i must admit i am not all that surprised). he's been in the music scene since the 60s, if i recall correctly and has played with greats like ronald shannon jackson. definitely check this out if you are a jazzy type. _high life_ is on enemy records and, having been released in 1990, should still be available. I'm short of time but I wanted to tell you that Happy called me tonight and just *raved* about the HGP tapes. She was "floored and knocked out!!" and those were her words. She was very touched and amazed, and she will be writing something for Ecto about her reactions and to thank us. Don't look for that for a few days, at least. She's waiting until she gets the cassette inserts, and they were only mailed today. She also loved the scarf and said she wears it every day now. She said it was very warm. She asked me about the concept of "fuzzy blue" and I told her the Martin/Vickie/Klaus/Martin/everyone story. My fault, my fault, my fault, she didn't know that Ecto is called "The Warm, Fuzzy Blue mailing list" but she sure does now. I thought *sure* I'd mentioned it, but I hadn't. About the Philly show... Direct from Happy: "Taping is ok, cameras are ok, but no flash" and she will put that in her contract, which is already signed, but she will change. The taping bit was a big part of the conversation, and the gist was that she has no problems with Ectophiles taping for pass-around to other (less fortunate :-) Ectophiles, but that she hated the thought that a tape would end up as a bootleg sold in the pages of Goldmine, or that it would get passed on to non-Happy fans and told "this is what Happy sounds like live" when the whole thing might sound *awful* but she feels such affection for and trust in Ectophiles that she's willing to let the show be taped. She had thought about special passes for us, so the security guards would only let us in with taping equipment, but that would be too complicated, so it's either all or nothing at all and she's willing to let it be all. She's very worried about the sound and the fact that the acoustics in the place might be truly horrific, and there's not a thing they can do about it. They won't be able to know until the day of the show, and the soundcheck will tell the story. God knows what kind of story it will tell. It very well might be a total nightmare and that's one thing she is worried about re the taping. She said it will be a long soundcheck. For that, and a few other reasons, she won't be able to meet with us before the show, but definitely will after the show, even if it's just for a few minutes. She said she'd go out with us if she could, but couldn't promise anything except that she *would* meet with us in some way. Not that I wanted her to promise anything, I just mentioned it and she said "sure!" and that she *wants* to meet us. She will be doing a live interview at WXPN on *Friday* so we have to remember it. I'll keep up with details as the time gets nearer. It's *possible* but not certain, that she'll be doing another show in Philly the day after the big one. 2 possibles: an added date if the first one is sold out and/or a special fundraiser for WXPN. If the benefit thing goes through, it's not likely any of us can go, because tickets will be around $100.00 (and people think $15.75 is outrageous! If WXPN thinks that Happy will draw supporters for $100.00, then *they* really believe in her!) but maybe we can take up a collection and get one person in (Jessica's my choice) to tape it for the rest of us. See, WXPN *will* be promoting the show, they just haven't started yet. If it's just another added date, then maybe most of us can go to that one too. Well, we don't have to worry or think about those until they are either confirmed or junked. Those thinking of or actually going to Albany *and* Philly will find that it's a very good idea. Happy said that the Albany show will be much different from the Philly show. Tapeittapeittapeit!!! btw, video cameras at either gig are *not* ok. Happy said that they will very likely tape it themselves. That's not certain, but she did say that they have been "documenting" the rehearsals and other things. Ohhhh, yay! No, I wasn't promised a copy of the raw footage :-( :-) It's now almost 80% certain that Chris and Jorn and I will be going! There are details to be worked out, so I can't say 100% for sure. Happy said that it would be so strange to know that I'd be out there in the audience, and yet we've never met. She'll probably know who I am, she has a description of me and I'm not going to be hard to miss. I told her to wink at me :-) I'm so scared about people meeting me, but it's a silly thing to be scared of and I'm really not going to let it bother me. If people (Happy, Kevin & Ectophiles) like me now, what I look like isn't going to change that. I know that, but still, I *really* wish I looked like Jessica or Meredith, then I wouldn't have to be scared at all. Klaus, the video you saw was for the song "Dizzy" which is on Hunkpapa and is one of my favorite songs by them. The lyrics are about an Indian woman who has fallen in love with a white man, and they are excellent. Rodney, glad you got in contact with Ed. Keep us updated. Kiri, thanks for the new list. I about fell on the floor when I saw the name "Kimo Sabe" not because I'd heard of the group, but just the name. They must be old Lone Ranger fans. That's all for now, more later... Re: Rita Mitsouko Funny enough, one of my favourite songs is by this lady... I taped it from the radio around '86 or so. I have no idea what it's called, but once I saw the video on TV late at night... Rita was doing this really funky dancing and occasionally a guitarist with a great deal of face makeup would pop up to rip off a wild solo. And I think there was a monkey in it too, watching the video on a TV and changing among the different cameras with a remote control. (!) It's pretty fast pop/rock, and the chorus is mostly lots of La's, but really nice stuff. I've got some other French music I taped at the same time that I also really like... anyone here with a reasonable knowledge of French bands? Re: Rearmament Since I heard side A of Rearmament for the first time last Saturday, I've been unable to keep "I Am a Legend" from floating around my head. Today at work my boss caught me singing it out loud. He caustically suggested that in that case I ought to have a pay rise. I agreed and reminded him of the conditions of the Heroes, Saints, Celebrities And Legendary Figures Union which state that all members receive quintuple pay at all times, and get even more for deigning to show up at work. He was so impressed he immediately gave me a whole pile of money. I wish. Re: Happy gatherings I'm extremely jealous of those of you going to the concerts, not to mention these little Ectopad parties... please keep up the informal reports, they make entertaining reading. The more I hear, the stronger becomes my resolve to come over to the U.S. Hey Klaus! Maybe we can time it so we're there at the same time. Possibly when Happy plays the Yankee Stadium. :-) Re: Lurkers How many other Australians do we have lurking on here? Vickie wrote after (or was it before?) straightening out Riikka's name: It's as if I'd been saying "Burks" or "Bossert" all along, I've been rude and didn't even know it. You picked the wrong example. :) Outside of my family, I've been called "Burks" by someone virtually my whole life, the price of having other Doug's around. It was practically unanimous in high school. I probably still answer to it faster than "Doug", and even call myself "Burks", especially when I'm angry at myself. Still I do prefer my first name, so your point is eventually valid. I too mourn the loss of Ectophiles, but Vickie, don't even think of blaming yourself even a tiddle for calling Dan the wrong name. I called Martin the wrong name twice, and he's stuck around anyway (assuming a long vacation hasn't returned any sense into his head :) ) Vickie again: Doug, I liked your idea about meeting at another concert, how about Chicago? Whenever that will be. Where really doesn't matter to me. An airline ticket from here is roughly the same no matter where I go. The question is having something to enjoy besides the concert itself. It's a lot of money just for a concert (the airline ticket, not the concert ticket, in spite of the recent posts :) ). Well, made my first run through the Happy Gift Project tapes. What a long, strange tape it's been. :) Do you think a record company would be interested? I don't think Mitch has an Ectophile tribute album in his list of Ectoware. Does Greg have any friends in Colorado? I spotted a Colorado license plate with 'OOFTAH' on it in my parking lot Sunday afternoon. Well, it's close isn't it? :) Other music: I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned it, but Betty performed single songs occasionally on NPR's Morning Edition over the last year or so, though I haven't heard them in a while. I'll second whoever recommended Toni Child's latest album _House of Hope_. Powerful. It's totally outside the normal range of this group, but if anyone was curious what Led Zeppelin would sound like with a reggae rhythm section and Elvis on lead vocals, check out Dread Zeppelin.
