I'm back, all! I'm sure you missed me, too. :) Woj has kept me appraised of the major goings-on, and there's a tape waiting for me in the bowels of our campus mailroom, so as soon as it reopens on Tuesday, I'll be able to listen to how the Happy Tape came out. Yay! I hear there are two show dates so far. Neatoid. I'll be there, I'll be Ecto, I'll be psyched to meet a bunch of you! My semester break was fruitful, in that it brought a simultaneous pseudo- Konversion and Happyvangelization in the form of my sister asking for a tape of TSW and Warpaint, and my parents actually not telling me to turn the stereo down when Happy was blasting out of it. Always a good sign. :) I hope I'm not too clueless around here the next few days. How do I get to the archives, and what's there at the moment? Klaus sent me a bunch of messages pertaining to his travels up and down the Eastern seaboard, but that's all I've seen so far. I gather I missed a golden opportunity to request live renditions of some early Happy songs- oh well, I'll take whatever I can get... A much belated but heartfelt Happy new year to all. *---------------------------------------------* | Meredith Tarr | | *** | | "Living in the gap between past and future" | | *** | | mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu | *---------------------------------------------* ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 19 Jan 92 23:08:04 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: ectopad well, it made sense at the time... it's another wacky East-CoasT Outing! but i'll let Claudia, Angelos, and Liz who y'all don't even know, describe it while i get my fuzzy brown t-shirt... I had a message ready on Saturday but couldn't send it out. Whereever I was trying to send to from home, I got bounces. Hope it gets fixed soon. Vickie was rightfully baffled: > Also, *WHAT* NEW ANNA DOMINO ALBUM????? Rodney (welcome!) as well: >Klaus, is there REALLY a new Anna Domino album out? What's it called? Uh, sorry to disappoint you, but I was meaning 'new for me', one I didn't know and didn't know about, not a new release. It is a self titled album from 1986 with a very beautiful cover. The 1st song is "'Rythm'", the last one "Half of Myself". You know that already, don't you? "Throwing Muses" > What video did you see? I don't remember the title of the song, or from which album it was, just the group name. The video was shot in a big hall with some scaffolding. I only saw the last minute of it, so there might have been more to it. Thanks for all the info about them! I was quite surprised (was I?) to get that many responses about a group which (as far as I can remember) hasn't been mentioned here before. I now have "hunkpapa" and "house tornado", which were the only ones I could find. At that time I only had recommendations from Greg and Vickie, and their suggestions on HT broke even. I took it because it looked like a real bargain. I assume 4AD put two albums on one CD. It contains 11 songs from "house tornado" and 6 from "the fat skier". Also I _finally_ found an album from "This Mortal Coil" (It'll End In Tears), which is running right now and sounds very good. But I'll have to stop buying CDs for a while now, otherwise I don't have a chance to listen to the latest ones properly. It's definite! I will see the Rainbirds concert on the 2nd of February in Cologne. Tickets were still available. Sorry, Claudia, they are only doing this one gig in our area. They don't have one when you are back. :( Vishal asked: > Are the songs on the "Stateless" CD the same mixes as the ones on > "Stateless...Plus" ? "Stateless...Plus" sounds disappointingly flat > compared to the vinyl version of "Stateless". But, check out Lene singing > "I think we're alone now" in Japanese on the Plus CD! Hmm, I don't know, as I only have the "Stateless" CD. I left the "Plus" in the shelf. It's the only Lene Lovich album I have so far, so I didn't want another which is more or less the same. > Ooo, two of my favorites!! Hope you got Danielle's "Dark Adapted Eye". No, the one I have is "Blast The Human Flower", a release from 1990, which is pretty good. But I do have big problems with Diamanda Galas' "you must be certain of the devil". This is a potpourri of stuff: from new releases to old, questions to answers. Please bear with me, there really is some interesting stuff in here :) New Releases (Female) Kimo Sabe: While they say this is a new release, according to the record jacket it came out in 1988 on Medical Records. The band/duet consists of Cathren Dan: vocals and keyboards, and John Howard:guitar, vocals, keyboards. Reviewer says they sound like Great City, I think they sound like Lene. It is a decent album, a little rough but sweet. I like em. Correspondence: Kimo Sabe 2309 Post Road Warwick, RI 02886 God's Little Monkeys "lip": A fun band. The lead singer is Jo Swiss. She has a really interesting voice, and a bizarre range...from really low to kinda obnoxious high end. I assume they are Canadian tho im not sure. The male singer sounds kinda like the dude from Midnight Oil tho not so raspy - he has a pleasant voice. I like this album a lot, they remind me of The Men They Couldnt Hang - a bit of countryish twang like Jane adds to some of her songs, a bit of beach sway....= a whole lot of fun. Lida Husik "Bozo" on Shimmy Disc: Grungy voices, and guitars. Reviewer says of the band.."sounds a bit like The Tinklers got a sex change and mated with the Beatles. Droning vocals set to minimal drums and guitar. 'Rubberband' sound." I just plain thought it was 'UGGH' For those Cocteau Twins fans there is a new 12" out there consisting mostly of songs from CD5 with two previously unreleased songs mixed in. The tracks are as follows: Aikea Guinea....High Monkey Monk....Sighs smell of Farewell...Pearly Dewdrops Drops....Dials....Hazel....Quisquose....Sugar Hiccup...Orange Appled.....Pink Orange Red Old Releases: some thoughts His Name is Alive "Livonia" It's really too bad that my first exposure to this band had to be one of their pretentious performances. I really like this album a lot. They are just one of those bands that is AWFUL live! It's too bad the lead singer didn't lip sync haha to this album...it wouldve made a world of difference...anyway Here's Woj's review for those interested: "The next 4AD band? From Chicago? Yup! It's Warren Defever (of ElvisHitler) revealing a whole nother side of himself: a world of tape loops, layering, you name it. This is __the__ Quintessial (sp) 4AD release: Dark, moody, introspective, almost downright depressing. You'll love it!" SO appropriate Woj! I do like it...but love it...well i'll see. anyone know anything about Buffy Sainte-Marie, I saw that we have a dungload of albums by her in the station...she looks very bizarre, and very 70'sish?? Anyone know if Hetch Hetchy has any other albums besides Make Djibouti?? Retarded Camel gets my vote as the best name for a song ever! :) Anyone know about the Album/Band etc: Les Rita Mitsouko presentent The No Comprendo....I listened to a bit of it and it sounds kinda neat?? The Rhythem Sisters "Road to Roundhay Pier" Two sisters and a very much younger brother...unless they are pulling a fast one...this kid (12 at most) plays guitars, and fairly well i must add. These two sisters are _way bizarro_. Their music is kinda of poppish weirdness, but I like it. Anyone know about The Vivians 1991 release "Fear" on Ice Age Records?? or The Peregrins 1989 self-titled release?? Deirdre Steinschneider on vocals. One more release Salem 66 "Down the Primrose Path" 1990 on Homestead Records p.o box 1200 Brookline, MA 02146 Sorta grungy guitar bands with bizarro female vocals - very deep. The album has a couple of interesting songs...but nothing to write home about. Bands made up of Judith Grunwald: guitar, vocals, Elisabeth Kaplen: bass, vocals, James Vincent: drums, and Timothy Condon(what an unfortunate name...so close) :guitar They arn't bad if your into grungy sounds that fall somewhere between Divinyls grunge and 10,000 Maniacs's Wishing Chair vintage heaviness.
