We've seen them live quite a few times (once they even let us videotape them, a precious thing to us because the fiddle/voilin player at that time has since left the group) and they are always a treat. The very first time we saw them thye opened for Camper Van Beethoven in Kansas City. We were mesmerized, and, to use a cliche, *blown away*! > order direct from the group at > > Boiled in Lead > Postbox 7514 > Minneapolis MN 55407 USA > > _Old Lead_ (includes bOiLeD iN lEaD, Hotheads, 2 bonus tracks; 75min) We haven't gotten this on CD yet, but we have the vinyl and cassettes. This early stuff is my favorite, partly because it's the first stuff we bought, and partly because the fiddle/violin player on all these tracks, Dave Stenschoel, is *amazing*!!!! The new fiddle player is a very good musician, but he just doesn't have the magic that Dave has. This stuff is a lot "rougher" than the later albums, but more of an energetic edge. *HIGHLY* recommended, if you like Irish fusion. The later albums are very good, but I really don't listen to them all that much, I think because of the "slick" studio sound. BiL are best (IMHO) when they're raw and live. When I want to listen to them for pleasure, and I do, quite often, I always reach for the older material. We just *have* to get that CD. I'm dying to see what the extra tracks are. I've played BiL on SiG, because they have often used female vocals and female musicians. I'm not sexist! :-) Vickie ======================================================================== Date: 18 Jan 92 11:18:46 EST From: Bob Brown <74756.1557@compuserve.com> Subject: Yippee Happy Day! My tix for the Philly show came today! Jessica - Two of us are coming, myself and a converted friend - Charlie Natter. I'm working on a 3rd. As I mentioned to Jessica, I'll be gald to search out and make arrangements for a meeting place that Saturday afternoon in Philly. Since it's general admission, I presume we want to get to the theater early for up front seats? With that in mind if we are going to gather somewhere it should be early to mid-afternoon. I'm open for suggestions on the type of place you all would like to meet at. I'll be glad to do all the footwork here locally. Please indicate your preferences - restaurant, bar, etc. We have all kinds of ethnic and/or regular restaurants. Mexican w/margaritas might be fun.... Or...we have a large bar near the venue that has lotsa stuff on the menu. I'll be glad to print out maps on the laser printer and either post or mail them out to all coming. If anyone is flying in or taking Amtrak we can try to help with transportation. Jessica - if Happy can't join us before, perhaps you can see if she can join us after the show. We could all go somewhere after as well. Martin here! Yes, he's back, bigger, browner and even Happier than before. Well, I don't know about you lot, but I had a magic three-week holiday... just wandered all over our East coast, finding hidden beaches, climbing mountains, hiking through rainforest, partying til very late in nightclubs and bars, going to concerts, living in big cities, meeting people, buying CD's and T-shirts and generally having a great time. Came back to find my car had magically exploded while I was away, (all the people who live in my house vigorously denied any involvment), but this was offset by the pile of mail I had, which included my new (autographed) copy of Warpaint, and my repaired Rearmament tape (which now has side A). I *love* side A of Rearmament ... how could I have lived without it? BTW, I asked Happy to "write a little something" on the CD for me, and also asked about the lack of guitars in Warpaint. Thus on the CD she wrote: MARTIN, "A LITTLE SOMETHING" LOOK FOR GUITAR ON MY NEXT ALBUM! Happy Rhodes Oh ha hardy ha, Happy. :-) And I hope the last bit doesn't mean I'm going to have to look real HARD for some guitar on the next album. :-) I also got my Happy Holidays card. I like that too, though for some reason it reminds me of one of Tom Petty's music videos....I think it's "Don't Come Around Here No More". Back to things Ecto, the person whose account I am currently using for email appears to have trashed digests 93 to 115... so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's been going on here for the past three weeks. Vickie, I understand the HGP has been split into two tapes now, what's on each one and do you want some moolah for the second one? Did Chris manage to create that computer graphic for the cover? Also, is the Ecto SiG on the way yet? BTW, I'm glad you liked those Gyan tracks... it's awesome to think of music I recorded from CD here in Australia being played on a Chicago radio station. (Or did you find the CD over there...?) Jessica, What's all this about a T-shirt? What's on it, and how much o' dat filthy lucre is required to obtain one? And any sign of the first edition of the Ectozine yet? Anyone, Have there been any Happy concerts yet? Were they incredibly fantastic or just simply extremely brilliant? What else have I missed? Martin here again... My last post asked a whole lot of questions about Ectopian activities in my absence... fortunately for me the guy whose account I am using very kindly saved and downloaded all my Ecto digests offline while I was away, and I have just spent the last six hours or so reading the 25 or so digests I missed. It's now 6:30 in the bloody morning...! Geez you people can write!!! :-) Anyhow... needless to say most of my questions have been answered. More later when I can maintain a steady stream of thought (having the Twin Peaks soundtrack playing in the background is not exactly helping me stay awake, either) But now, my pillow softly calls... Hi, everyone. I've been on this list for several months now and have just now gotten around to writing. First, I have to admit that I don't actually own any music by Happy (haven't even heard it). I plan on ordering Warpaint next week, though, if I can manage to find an envelope. :-) If any stores in the Bay Area that I knew of carried her work I would have had it awhile agao. I have gotten lots of interesting suggestions for new artists from this list and have picked up several. I just bought "Smells Like Truth" by Laurie Freelove and I think it's great! Does she have any other CDs out? The next two in line for me are one of the Rainbirds albums and Betty (if I can find anything in the stores). Klaus, is there REALLY a new Anna Domino album out? What's it called? I've been waiting for her to put something new out for awhile now. Also, I'd recommend Hunkpapa as your first Throwing Muses album. Not necessarily their most typical work, but definitely their most accessible. Also, I have a couple of recommendations that I hadn't seen mentioned here: 1) Give Bel Canto a try if you haven't heard them before. I'd especially recommend their 2nd album, Birds of Passage. 2) If you want a great source of suggestions for new music to try, buy or subscribe to, Option: Music Alternatives. Option is a bi-monthly magazine that focuses on all sorts of non-mainstream music. Each issue generally has 5-10 interviews/profiles and about 100 short reviews. Lots of information and ads from self-published artists, as well as interviews with folks along the lines of Kate Bush, Robyn Hitchcock, etc. The address is: Sonic Options Network, Inc. 2345 Westwood Blvd. #2 Los Angeles, CA 90064 (310)474-2600 A one year subscription is $15.95. I'm not connected with them in any way, just a big fan. I guess that's enough rambling for my first time out. -Rodney ======================================================================== From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Re: First post from a longtime lurker... You're on gaffa right? You should e-mail Ed Suranyi (sorry, I don't have his address handy) because he told me (on the phone, and I didn't write them down) that he saw copies of warpaint in 2 different used record stores, he could tell you the names of them. Also, he said he saw it in the Tower Records in Dublin, CA. He's not a Happy fan, but he's a friend who knows how much I like her and he keeps me informed of things like that. I just wish I had written down the names of the used record stores, sorry. They are in the Bay area, that's all I know. He lives in Livermore. > I have gotten lots of interesting suggestions for new artists from this list > and have picked up several. She's a former member of Two Nice Girls, that's the only other thing that's widely available, though she probably has other things floating around the Austin underground. > Klaus, is there REALLY a new Anna Domino album out? Yes, I really curious about the Anna Domino too and I agree about Hunkpapa, it's a good introduction to Throwing Muses. Greg, what's this about House Tornado? You don't like it or you think it's too weird for Klaus to start with (I do too) or what? What do we have to talk about? > Also, I have a couple of recommendations that I hadn't seen mentioned here: > 1) Give Bel Canto a try if you haven't heard them before. Yep, WHITE OUT CONDITIONS!! :-) You know, I used to really dislike the second album, but one night I put it on and put headphones on and listened to it over and over again and it certainly is a wonderful album. I've lost all my previous naysaying about it, but I still like WOC best, possibly from sentimental reasons. Annelli sings on a recent manufacture album, which is interesting, because Sarah McLachlan sang with them too. > 2) If you want a great source of suggestions for new music to try, buy or > subscribe to, Option: Music Alternatives. I can't read Option every issue, so if anything appears (or..has appeared) please tell us about it. Kiri, Capercaillie is on Green Linnet Records in America, so I would imagine that the new album will be out in America too.
