Don't put this into ftp yet Jessica, it's not completely finished. Heloo Brian, thanks for that great story! You're now on the Birthday List. Klause, I need a day for him. Also for Valerie, who was born March 25, 1971. Mistah Footah's b'day is in a couple o days and I'll be posting the new list then. Hey, to the Los Angeles area folks (Tom and ? sorry, who else?) here's a bit of possibly of interest news. First, remember way back when I posted this....... ====================== "Vickie's Happy Story, Pt. II, aka You Shouldn't Have Asked :-)" Where was I? Oh yeah... Who *IS* this person???? I made John, right then and there, call Bob Davis in San Francisco to get *any* information whatsoever. John and I are quite a team when it comes to tracking people down. {Brief anecdotal interlude that has nothing to do with Happy, but might, in the future: John had found an album in St. Louis by a...woman...named Riz. He brought it on one of his visits and I fell in love with it too. I even played various songs on my show. We wanted to track this person down, but there was no information whatsoever on the album. John tried various things and I tried various things. I looked very closely at all the liner notes and saw, in tiny letters, the name of the studio where the album had been recorded. I called information and got the number of the studio. I called and asked the person who answered if he remembered a woman named Riz who recorded an album there. He started laughing. Yeah, except that Riz is a boy. ?What? Yeah, he's just a kid, 17, 18, something like that. You see, Riz's voice on the album sounds something like Marianne Faithful or Nico. Not exactly like them, but low. The photos on the album were very vague, and we thought it looked like an extremely interesting-looking young woman, dressed in black, no makeup, short wavy hair, sensitive face. John and I both thought so, and we both felt slightly silly when we found out the truth. Anyway, (really, this is interesting and is somewhat Happy-related) the studio owner, who was the person who answered the phone, passed on my name and phone number to Riz. Riz called me and we connected immediately, because within the first minute of conversation, it was established that Riz was a Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel fan. We talked about them for a long time, and about lots of other things. He heard the whole story of John and I trying to track him down, and I heard the interesting (but I won't tell it here) story of who he was and how he came to make his album. To make a long, fascinating story short, John and Riz got in contact, John quit his job, moved to LA to be Riz's manager, Riz is temporarily working as a bass player for a terrible band that I can't remember the name of, but that will probably make it very big, good, so that Riz will make money and contacts needed to quit and record a second album, become very well-respected as a singer/songwriter/musician (he's really, truly brilliant!) and go on to work someday with Happy if at all possible and I hope it happens because if Happy is the closest thing we'll ever get to an American Kate Bush (no way will I ever say that in gaffa again!) then Riz is the closest thing we'll ever get to an American Peter Gabriel (the only male musician who fits) and they just simply *MUST* collaborate someday, that's all there is to it. They almost did a few years ago. Happy was going to do the vocals on one of Riz's very ethereal songs, but Riz didn't really have the money to go into the studio and record it properly. So they do know of each other. The point is that it all started because John bought an unknown record and, luckily, the recording studio's phone number was listed and easy for me to find. {End of brief anecdotal interlude} End of "Vickie's Happy Story, Pt. II, aka You Shouldn't Have Asked :-)" Vickie ============================== Ok, well maybe "the American Peter Gabriel" is a bit much, but I do think he's brilliant. Anyway, he has quit the terrible rock band because he couldn't stand making music he didn't really believe in. He has formed a band of his own called "Blash Meth" and will be performing at Crawford's in Lakewood, CA on the 11th. That is in the LA area, but I'm not exactly sure where. I just thought it was wonderful to find that he's performing his own music again. I personally haven't heard any of his new stuff (can you tell, this is a disclaimer :-) but I know that I lovelovelove his old stuff. If any Ectophiles do go, *please* be sure to talk to Riz. He's very nice and if you mention "Kate Bush" "Happy Rhodes" "Vickie in Chicago with the radio show Suspended In Gaffa" I'm sure he will perk right up. John might be at the show and if you meet him too, give him a thanks, because if it weren't for him you wouldn't have heard of Happy. Tell him you're on the Happy mailing list. He knows all about it, and may be joining us one of these days. He's shopping for a computer and modem. I need to check the Nixpub listings to find a Public Access site in the LA area. Does anyone know of any? Preferably in the southern Laguna Beach area, and definitely with e-mail and Usenet access. That's it, see ya... Guess i'm one of the new kids on this block, so let me introduce myself. I'm on the net 'cuz i work for the University of Washington here in the upper left corner of the country (apologies to Alaskans). I firmly believe that there is a whole world of great music out there. I want to hear that music and think that there are a lot of people who share that desire. For that reason, i've always been fascinated by radio. I'm old enough to remember when radio was fun and challenging; luckily Seattle has had a long history of good radio programming. I don't mean commercial radio; the commercial stations long ago ceased to care about the music they use as filler between the $$$ plugs. So, when i started seeing these great playlists posted in r.m.gaffa by a Ms. Vickie Ann Mapes, i was ecstatic. Here was someone doing some wonderful, enthusiastic programming. I started buying the things she was recommending, and was never disappointed! See, if i was wealthy (yeah, sure) i'd see to it that Vickie's Suspended in Gaffa could be heard everywhere! She's far too humble to admit it, but her programs & her knowledge of the music are priceless. I hope you all are able to hear her someday. Anyway, having been a Kate fan since the Kick Inside, i sent away for the Happy Rhodes tapes (& later the CD) and came to love this woman's music and dark lyrics. So, here i am. As far as musical tastes go, i can be happy as a hog listening to garage bands (like the SubPop crowd), loud industrial throbbing (Front 242 & all the great Belgian techno groups), as well as Kate, Happy, Jane, Aster and any of the other SIG stars. My birth day is July 9th; and i seriously believe that reading the newsgroups and the e-mail that comes out of the internet is better than any book i've encountered in a long, long time. I'm currently studying comp sci here at Wesleyan U in CT, although that is the last thing that I ever want to spend the rest of my life doing. I'm originally from orange county, california (argh!), having grown up there and only recently escaped. My birthday is March 25, 1971. My musical tastes fall into two main categories. one is the kate/happy category, and the other is broadway musicals. I tend to be over-enthusiastic about both types, which is probably typical of most of us on this list. My favorite artists are kate, happy, enya, madonna, suzanne vega, etc. As for my favorite musicals, they are chess, anything by cole porter, and whatever i am listening to at the moment. btw, alw hasn't been the same since tim rice left. just so you know... I've been haunting gaffa in and out for 1 1/2 years or so. I bought my first happy cd (warpaint) back in june when i visited vickie in chicago (i had 7 hours in chicago to meet vickie, call various others, and run to the only record store in town that sold the cd). I didn't become a full-fledged happy fan until recently, though, when i decided to play the cd on continuous play while i slept, and had an epiphany. hmmm...anything else? I just got my xmas card in the mail (well, just picked it up really. it sat in my box for over a week!) Wow, neat! didn't someone say that the happy holidays sign was added on afterwards? It seems like it. But it's still exciting. I've been explaining to my housemates all break who she is, and it makes it easier to have a picture of her to show them. Maybe I'll make a happy fan out of them yet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Valerie Nozick "Is there so much hate for the ones we love? vnozick@eagle.wesleyan.edu Tell me we both matter, don't we?"--Kate Bush ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ======================================================================== Subject: Oh dear, not more synchronicity... Date: Wed, 08 Jan 92 23:15:09 EST From: jeffy@lewhoosh.umd.edu Welcome to Valerie Nozick, whose favorite musical is Chess. My, what a shocking coincidence. I still remember that wonderful day in '85. I'd just started hearing "One Night in Bangkok" on the radio, and loved it. A friend of mine told me on the phone that he'd heard that the song was "actually from a MUSICAL." My parents had just arrived home from a trip to London a day or two earlier and they had proudly shown me the CDs of a "new musical by the guy who did Cats" (well, they were slightly right, sort of not really). I had absolutely no interest in it. Something clicked in my head and I asked my friend to hang on...ran to the room where my dad had his stereo, and yanked the CD. SHOCK! Dash back to the phone to tell said friend that WE HAD THE CD!! It was so exciting. I wonder whatever happened to my tape of that. Yow. That'll be seven years ago in March. So how many other _Chess_ freaks are out there? Jeff |Jeffrey C.
