This show is a mixture of new alternative music, world music, and some oldies, along with in-studio interviews and performances. The show stresses recently issued CDs. WXPN has been experimenting with this type of format for a few years now, and was given a grant to create "World Cafe." The host for this show is David Dye, a seasoned radio personality with varied musical interests. The result is a professionally produced show with the diversity of a college station. There has been some discussion in rec.music.cd about Happy Rhodes, and in rec.music.christian about Bruce Cockburn. Alt.exotic-music also had a discussion about Mouth Music a while ago. "World Cafe" plays these types of artists. They do not play Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, etc. World Cafe has held interviews with Bruce Cockburn, Timbuk3, Vinx, Christine Lavin, The Innocence Mission, and various others. It would not be unusual to hear Bob Marley, Timbuk3, Bonnie Raitt, Happy Rhodes, Bruce Cockburn, 3 Mustaphas 3, Yo La Tengo, Don Henry, Poi Dog Pondering, and Crash Test Dummies during one show. Those of you who are interested in these artists (and a good mix of music, too :-) should check with their local public radio station and ask when the show airs. If they don't carry it, ask why not. Disclaimer: I am in no way connected to WXPN or World Cafe other than being a *VERY* satisfied listener, and a contributor during their fund drives. My visit to Boston and Boston Ectophiles is nearly over. I'll fly home tomorrow night, but it is the last time that I've access to the net, so now is the time to say good bye from this side of the big pond. All e-mail for me should go to Germany again from NOW on. It was a most pleasant visit, and I (we) will visit the States again 2-3 weeks around 3.-7. Sept. '92. Hey, isn't there KaTemas in August? Maybe we can include that as well. HGP tape: I wonder where my parcel is right now. Another one I sent at the same time got to San Diego at the other side of the States after only 2 days, and it is now 2 weeks for the HGP. Why does it take longest for the most important one? Ask Murphy! Chip, I'll write you about your tracking program when I'm home. I was in the process of entering songtitles for my PC-based music database for weeks. So, see you again from Germany, although it doesn't really matter where you are. E-mail turns it all into a global village or family. Bye, Klaus. Date: Mon, 30 Dec 91 17:39:51 EST Hi ectophiles, Well I am back from a three day expedition to Vermont! There were 8 of us, and we had a great time playing Clue, watching movies, cooking and eating, and (alas) skiing. For someone who had skied once before 12 years ago, I think I fell not that many times (we are talking about cross country skiing...) even though I stuck to the practice trails (my one attempt to go down a hill was a complete failure...). Before I get on with my wishes I have a question I am sure some ectophiles can help out with. What do you know about 3 Mustaphas 3? I am asking this here before I ask it in rec.music.misc that is more appropriate, so have in mind I am totally clueless about this band. I got a CD of theirs and to my amazement found a greek song on it!! This got my curiosity going. So. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! with a Happy tour, a rerelease of the 1st4 on CD a Kate new album and tour, a Peter Gabriel new album and tour and a real Sinead song/album! What is more, and I haven't seen anyone mention this, but the envelope was *hand addressed*! Now, my copy of Warpaint is signed and has a message on it too, so I was able to compare handwriting. Yep, it looks like Happy addressed the letters personally... I'm so chuffed! It makes up for the fact that my HGP contribution has disappeared into a black hole :-(. Jeanne Schreiter is currently unsubscribed to Ecto because of a broken computer and a possibly disappearing account and a difficulty in keeping up with all the wonderful discussion on the list. She does ask about you all often and misses the list...I've forwarded various bits and piece to her at times, and she's appreciated the response towards her poetry. She will resubscribe as soon as we can get all her compu-troubles worked out. Anyways, Jeanne's turning 25 on friday, and I thought it might be nice if everyone would send her a little message, wishing her a happy birthday and offering a bunch of electronic hugs. Klaus, goodbye and have a good trip back. I'm so glad I got a chance to talk to you and Claudia and Angelos while you were here. Angelos, thanks for calling and I hope the phone bill isn't too outrageous. Noirin, yes, she has a *very* *very* *VERY* ****VERY**** beautiful voice!! I've fallen deeply in love with the album Stor Amhran. I've kept the tape that Chip lent me for a very long time, and I hate the thought of giving it back :-) but I will (really Chip, really, one of these days, no kidding). Describing her voice is useless, except to say that she belongs in the Academy of Angels (along with Happy, Kate, Liz Frazer, Eleftheria and Lisa Gerrard). Hey, I talked to Happy for a few minutes tonight and she said that the HappyHat photo was taken in 1988 and that *is* Kevin there and the Happy Holidays sign was (along with the hat) pasted in. Can I get another H in the beginning of this line? Yes! Good deal! No big news, except Happy has been scheduled to play Philadelphia in March. It's definite. Her opening act will probably be (not certain yet) Patty Larkin! Honestly, I was knocked out when I heard that. Patty's fairly well-known. However, I think it's great. Patty will draw a lot of people on her own. Damn, ran out of H things to say. Anyway, I'll be posting all the pertinent show dates when they are given to me. They are scheduled to play the QEII in Albany before the Philly date, so I'll let you know about that too. Surely there are some of you who are willing to drive to Albany. Geez, I wish I could be there for that concert. RE: HGP. You know, there were some people that I forgot to list. I am *SO* embarrassed that i forgot you all. I haven't received your tapes though, so Bob Kollmeyer, Harry and David Blank-Edelman, tell me if you sent them. Are they lost in the mail system too? Please let me know. Is there anyone else I forgot? Please tell me. I don't want anyone to think that I'd ignore them on purpose. I was going by Klaus's list and not my own. Bob and David e-mailed me about their contributions and Harry posted after Klaus left for America. I stuck my list away in a file and forgot about it. When time came to start recording the HGP, I pulled out the list Klaus posted and didn't remember that my list had more names on it. Sheesh, I'm sorry. Who knows, by next year we might need *3* tapes! Wow... btw, I'm making a second tape for Happy, so those bumped will still have their songs heard by her. So, is there anyone else who wants to hear Happy do "Poetic Justice" in concert? Angelos mentioned it, but no one else has. Jessica, have fun being a brunett. Is it Dave Steiner who wants to see your hair blue? Did you get tired of all the blonde jokes flying around? There was a story in USA Today about blonde jokes and they mentioned the Internet as being the place where Joseph Boskin, historian as Boston Univ. first heard blonde jokes. They interviewed him for the story. I've never been blonde, though I almost tried it once. I started noticing gray hairs when I was 17 and I was horrified, so I started dyeing my hair. I either kept it Black or Reddish brown. A couple of years ago I decided that I had better give my hair a rest and quit with the dye. I was not looking forward to the gray hair, but something really cool happened. I found that I had these *way* too cool silver streaks right at the front (I have long straight hair and part it in the middle) and nowhere else. I can't really do anything with them but they're neat. Chris loves 'em. The rest of my hair is dark brown. People pay big bucks at fancy salons to get what I got naturally. I love these posts about Religious Experiences with music. They're truly wonderful! I have lots myself, but seeing Genesis on TV that night and hearing Kate for the first time are the Grandma & Grandpa of them all. Since both experiences literally changed my life, they will always be the most important to me. Has anyone else ever been straight, and listened to music that made them feel high? That happened to me once. It doesn't qualify as a religious experience, but it sure was strange. I was listening to the radio one night in, oh, must have been around 1976 or 77. I was alone and sitting at the dining room table, reading. A piece of music came on that I'd never heard before, but I wasn't really paying attention. The peice was long and after a few minutes I started feeling dizzy and closed my eyes. Immediately the music just sort of washed over me and I felt high as a kite. Though I was an acid/pot/shrooms lover, I swear I hadn't been high for weeks. Yet I felt as if I had just taken the most mellow and interesting hit of acid I'd ever had. Anyway, the DJ played the whole album and after it stopped I started feeling normal again. I listened intently for the information about the music. It was called "Epsilon in Malaysan Pale" (sp?) and it was by Edgar Froese. I later bought the album and liked it, but never again experienced such a flashback kind of feeling. Very very strange. Nice though. If indeed it was a clinical "flashback" I enjoyed it tremendously and it's the only time it's ever happened to me. Well gee, I stayed up all night again. I love to sleep but I hate going to bed. Would that I could, I'd live a 36 hour day all the time. I've been listening to music on headphones and reading newsgroups. I can't believe I spent 3 hours *just* reading soc.women and rec.arts.movies. I usually skim those groups but for some reason I read each post thoroughly (out of curiousity, I suppose) and found it enlightening. Mainly I'm talking about soc.women. I was absolutely fascinated by the fact that people can spend so much time arguing teeny tiny little details. Gaffa flame wars aren't so bad after all. It's really kind of horrifying to see so much hatred on the net, there are tons of posts flying around with the most venomous poison contained within. Makes Cynthia look like a choir girl. Only a few vocal people are responsible for the worst posts, the ones that threaten violence against gays. It's so sad to see these people spew hatred toward others who happen to live a lifestyle they disagree with. Ecto is a wonderful place to come home to. I think you folks are truly fine and I'm one proud Ectoma, I tell ya. That reminds me, the get-together is on for this coming Saturday. We'll start the do dah around 1 or 2ish. Anyone who wants to and can come is more than welcome. If you want to call and say hi, that's cool. The address is 1627 W. Farwell, #2N, Chicago. (312) 508-KATE. Guess what? Suspended In Gaffa in Kansas City is still an ongoing concern! I've been moved to Sunday nights instead of being kicked off. I'm SO Happy!! I started out on Sundays originally and had quite a big following, so maybe I can get some of those people back. I'm pleased! The strangest thing happened. I got kicked off the system this morning (yes, it's afternoon now) because I'd been on too long. I was horrified because i'd just typed in all of the above and it was lost. Blllaaahhh! I went to the JPark account and started all over again. I was about to the same point, and the system locks up! I couldn't continue, I couldn't retreive, I counldn't even start over again. I went to bed. *sigh* Well, when I logged on to vickie just now, there's my letter in the buffer! hooray! So, here it is in all its glory (pft) and I'm going to mail the sucker before something happens again. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! I think the only bit greg left out was that the tour included the village, the plastics district, the lighting district, the jewelry ditrict, textiles, beads, 5th ave, broadway, the museum of natural history, central park (was dark, way too dark), rockefeller center, radio city music hall, wall st., nassau st, trinity church (and the burial site of James Lawrence, famous in the war of 1812 for saying "Don't give up the ship" (note that my full name is jessica lawrence koeppel dembski - he was my great-great-great-great-great grandfather)), trump tower, lincoln center, the woolworth building (not including bathrooms in it's lobby), the world trade center, building 666, the holland tunnel..... hmm, well i guess that's all i can think of that wasn't already mentioned. (it was *not*, of course, presented in the order listed :) (although, you'd be surprised how close.. 'twas truly an unusual tour.) Aside from Happy simply being what brought us together, the evening was further happy-ified by Klaus' sweatshirt - the Ecto cover came out surprisingly well!!! It's a *very* nice sweatshirt. Also I had along with me the proofs I have made so far for the ecto t-shirts (they will be a simplified and three color version of the cover - it occured to us that the "colored" part really *ought* to be fuzzy blue :) _Also_, i had the photos that were taken when I first met happy in albany. (I'll be scanning one or two (or three or four) of them in within the next few weeks!) aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh happy new year to all of you! Oh, vickie: i work for two people, dave steiner (who's also a happy fan and on ecto) and Mel Pleasant (who is neither, though he did say "interesting progression" at some point on warpaint once). It is Mel who wants to see me with blue hair. Dave prefers the more natural colors :) not that he *minds* the blue and purple and red, and i'm not quite sure if he's got a preference of blonde over brown (though he might) but he definitely prefers me to be one solid, and not unnatural, color :) eep, off to sleep with me, jessica ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
