I noticed that mistake as soon as I posted, but left it alone figuring that it would prompt some talk about Heavenly Bodies. It did (thanks Alan!) and gives me a chance to recommend it too! The Heavenly Bodies album I have is called "Celestial" and it came out in 1988. Carolyn Seaman is the vocalist. I don't know what she's been up to recently...the last I heard of her she sang on a This Mortal Coil album. (here I show holes in my record collection, because the only TMC album I have is "It'll End In Tears" and I *think* Carolyn appeared on "Filigree & Shadow"). I'm not completely crazy about every single song on this album (I could do without "Rains On Me") but love enough of them to recommend it. I don't know if this is out-of-print or not. It's worth picking up if you see it around. I bought the LP first, then re-bought it on CD. A kinda, sorta sister band, Beautiful Pea Green Boat, is worth mentioning too. (Wonder what ever happened to them? Stupid name, nice music!) BPGB's lead singer was Heather Wright. I'd describe both bands as ethereal, percussive pop, or something like that :-) Heavenly Bodies "Celestial" C'est La Mort (CLM CD010) Beautiful Pea Green Boat "Still Life" C'est La Mort (CLM CD009) Does anybody (woj?) have CLM's new address? Greetings, I've been trying to nail down a suggestion for yet another Ecto project for a while, and I think I've finally come close to what I'm looking for -- Ecto classified ads. A lot of CD and tape exchanges go on in Ecto's background, and I wanted to find a way to broaden this to include people who don't know who to talk to, are too shy to find out, etc., etc. So here is my proposal. I will maintain a set of classified ads for Ecto. Just off the top of my head the following categories would serve as a start. CDs wanted List of CD's you are really looking for CDs offered List of CD's you are willing to offer Tapes wanted List of tapes (original or copies) you are Tapes offered looking for or willing to make Ecto get-togethers Concert get-togethers Looking for a local Ectophile to join you for a concert? While I've put this into the context of trading, obviously offers for sale or purchase are also welcomed. The list can obviously be extended, and I welcome any and all suggestions (though I'm a bit queasy about "Personals"), but I hope you get the general idea. I hope this can make the trading market more open and active, and everyone can listen to albums they otherwise could not get hold of. No one would feel left out. How would this work? If you have a classified ad, you would e-mail it to me, and I would add it to the list. (I reserve the right to edit it for conciseness, but would exercise no other editorial control). I will not glean Ecto for material which could be included in classified ads. They have to be submitted specifically as classified ads. I imagine that this list could grow quite big, so regularly posting it to Ecto would probably prove impractical. So I intend to make it available via anonymous FTP or via personal e-mail request. Once a week, I would post the items added in the past week with pointers to the full list. Do y'all think there is a need for this? Any problems or suggestions with my specifics here? I personally would like to see some decent support (expressed privately or publicly) before I start this up. Wondering what I am getting myself into (again), I remain ... Well, here is a secret I've been keeping from all of you until I was certain what to say about her. I'm still not certain, but Michael's dropped her name so it's time to try. The name: Janie Mitchell. Too bad. She's going to spend her entire career explaining that she's not Joni Mitchell. The album: Psalm & Squall. Which describes it well. A sweet and stormy, entreating and taunting, praising and gusty (and gutsy) collection. What she's like: Well, the names that come to my mind in various songs (one name per song, though) are Bel Canto, Mari Boine [Persen] and Rainbirds. She's ethereal mostly, but there are decidedly gutsy songs (for example the swingy, taunting, edgy "Sophisticate"). I dunno, I'm having trouble finding the right words, so here's what Ladyslipper had to say about her: First you think that she sounds like Jane Siberry, then like a slightly disgruntled Enya, and by the third song, you realize that Janie Mitchell is unlike anyone you've heard before. Drawing upong the influences of medieval church music and traditional acoustic aires, this 1992 album combines the ambient timelessness of ancient melodies with electronic synthesized sound and choral harmony. Stormy lyrics are delivered with bluesy wails and Celtic and Eastern European intonations...both her Welsh heritage and the Portland, Oregon progressive music scene are heard here. Her angelic voice and diverse instrumentation make this an unusually fascinating folk album. Recommended! The Ladyslipper catalog # is NWR454 and the price $9.98 + postage & handling and tax for any NC residents. ladyslipper takes credit card orders over the phone and by fax. They're one of the places that have been really supportive of Happy, and keep all of her discs in stock. Here's their info: Ladyslipper, Inc. PO Box 3124-R Durham, NC 27715 800-634-6044 or 919-683-1570 FAX: 919-682-5601 They're a little more expensive than some places, but they are committed to keeping a big stock of music by women from a lot of independent and obscure labels, and deserve our support. It seems that cassette is the only format available, but I'm planning on writing to the label just to confirm that. Label address: New Weave Records, P.O. Box 17553, Portland, OR 97217, U.S.A. This is all I know about her. The album is copyright but I've never seen it anywhere other than in Ladyslipper (I bought it on spec after reading their write up on her and luckily was *not* disappointed) so I'm willing to dub some of the songs for anyone interested in a taste of her in return for either a blank tape and an SASE or a tape in trade. I don't like doing this, but I know that buying on spec isn't something most of us can afford to do, and I really think this woman deserves to be heard, especially by the kind of people (like you!) who will appreciate what she does. Last notes: the instruments included are Janie's wonderful voice, interesting lyrics (sample song titles: "Renascence," "Sapphira," "Wy'East and the Diamond Cutters"), keyboards, acoustic guitar, hammered dulcimer, synthesizers, programmed drums, flute, buche, penny whistle, electric dulcimer, recorders, tneor sax, soprano sax, percussion. Find this, buy this. It might take a couple of plays to become a TIU tape for you, but it will be for most of you, I'm sure of it. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 03 Feb 94 17:19:40 GMT From: GTP10@phx.cam.ac.uk Subject: 2nd Call For European Ecto Party As Ecto has been very busy recently, I thought it would do no harm to respost the following, in case anyone missed it first time round: Those who read r.m.gaffa/love-hounds will know that the next KaTeCon is scheduled to be in London on Sunday 10th April. This seems to me to provide the perfect excuse for another European EctoFest as I imagine a number of Ectophiles will make their way to the UK that weekend. As this weekend is during our Easter vacation I will have very few constraints on my time and should be able to cope with the organisation, so I'd propose that it happens chez moi in Cambridge on Saturday 9th April. There could be an event on Friday evening for early arrivals also. I can accommodate a number of people in relative comfort at my home but I could also arrange for rooms in my college (just a couple of minutes walk away) to be available at very cheap rates. It takes an hour by train from Cambridge to central London, so getting to the Convention on Sunday shouldn't be too arduous a journey. Cambridge is reachable from all three London airports by bus/coach. The journey takes 3 hours from Gatwick, 2 hours from Heathrow and 45 minutes from Stansted. The main Cambridge bus depot is a couple of minutes walk from my home (I live pretty centrally). You can also do the journey by train (via London) but it's probably only quicker for arrivals at Gatwick. (It may also be possible to arrange to meet people at airports depending on arrival times etc.) So, who's up for this?
