Yeah... whoever invented those #@$ dogbones should be locked in a room with a never-ending heap of CDs and be forced to remove them for all eternity. Rubbing alcohol doesn't work - it just moves the glue around, and any stronger solvent is likely to damage the case and my health. I've ended up just cutting the narrow part of the dogbone with a knife and leaving them on the case. Another thing that gets me about those stickers is the way they're promoted. Record companies claim they're there for my "protection" so I won't get pirated product. Which is, of course, pure unmitigated pap. Lene has always been one of my favorites, and I've been wanting to replace my albums for a while. The best part was the box set, The Stiff Years, was only $32.00. It includes Stateless, Flex, and No Man's Land, with bonus tracks on all three CDs covering New Toy and all her other releases (except March, and the songs on the PETA tributes). I'm listening to it now and loving every minute of it. It seems strange though that when she first came out everyone thought she was so odd. Basically they're just simple pop songs--but I love her voice anyway, and even her cheesy synth arrangements don't sound as cheesy as so much of the music of that era. The other great thing about Lou's (besides carrying Happy) was their used CD selection. I managed to find: Laurie Freelove -- Smells like Truth -$3.99 Eleanor McEvoy -- $4.99 Melissa Ferrick -- Massive Blue -$5.99 and Shriebkack -- Naked City - $8.99 All of which I'm pretty satisfied with. (I really like the Laurie Freelove. How come I had never heard of jer until I got Vickie's Femme Music tapes from the Ecto project and then heard a track from it on one of Neal's compilation tapes?) Anyway, its a great album. The Melissa Ferrick album is good too--we just found out she'll be at a coffee shop here in San Diego on Thursday--tickets are a whopping $3. I love deals like that (like when I saw Tori for only $7 general admission, was able to arrive an hour before the show and get front row center. Those were the days!) And Rearmament is of course great, as is Ecto (which I had heard before). And I finally picked up the Falling single from Alison Moyet. Sounds pretty good--I can't wait til the album finally is released. I notice that CDC has it listed (serial number and all). Has anyone actually found Essex yet? Has it been released in the UK? Also found Victoria William's Swing the Statue at Tower Records for $8.99. I think I like Happy Come Home better, but its still good--though it isn't as much fun as her first album. Supposedly the Tusin Tower also carries Happy Rhodes--but they file her under Blues and were sold out. Well, enough babbling. And Neal and I had just said on the way to buy Tori tickets that we each have to quit spending so much money. Oh well. I guess I'd rather listen to music than the sound of change in my pockets. Jeff ======================================================================== From: Stuart Myerburg Date: Mon, 28 Feb 94 18:15:37 -0500 Subject: A Tori Tale I thought I would chime in with my Tori tickets horror story so any of us who missed out can commisserate over our failure. Tickets went on sale at 10 am on Saturday here in Atlanta. So, my friend and I decided that we would be true fanatics. We went to a Ticketmaster location at 3 am so we could be first in line and therefore assured fabulous seats. Unfortunately, we did not realize until we got there that tickets would be sold through a lottery. As a result, it didn't matter how early you got there because everyone had an equal chance of getting tickets. This didn't really bother me until I read that the Tori and Grateful Dead lotteries would be combined. What was Ticketmaster thinking? They should never combine *any* sale with the Grateful Dead, let alone one with a very limited number of tickets. I was not happy at this point, but I was still optimistic that things would work out OK. I was wrong. Since the lottery didn't begin until 9:30 am, we decided to not get there much before then. When we arrived, a rather long line was forming, so we joined it. Almost everyone was a Deadhead. They were all making deals about how they could get the most tickets, which really infuriated me. I mean, I know that if Tori had 3 day festivals, I would probably be making plans to see every show, etc. But I wouldn't be so rude about it. They were almost laughing at the fact that we were going to be screwed over by the time-consuming process of getting the perfect Dead tickets for each of the 3 days. Some people were sneering, "Tori who? Is she like Celine Dion or something?" But ultimate blame still lies with Ticketmaster for terrible planning. After all, it wasn't the Dead fans' fault that their tickets were on sale on that particular day. Anyway, we did manage to find two other Tori fans and we decided whoever got the best number would buy all the tickets. Knowing my bad luck, I expected the highest number possible. But everyone else in our group got huge numbers and I got 17! Now, I was getting cocky, thinking that we had really been lucky and we would definitely get tickets. So, I waited in line. I stood as people bartered for Dead tickets, taking up valuable time deciding if it was best to get 3 tickets for the Wed. show, 3 tickets for the Thurs. one, and the rest for the Fri. show. I was becoming very distressed as valuable minutes ticked away. Eventually, I got up to the register. The guy in front of me shouted, "I got the last Tori tickets!" I wanted to die (or better yet kill the genius at Ticketmaster who planned this debacle). I'm still very bitter that I will not be seeing Tori this time around, but I guess I did everything I possibly could. Maybe next time things will be planned better. But knowing Ticketmaster, I doubt it. Of course, to make up for my misery, I went out and bought CDs. What better way to cheer myself up? Plus, I had $20 extra which wouldn't be spent on a Tori ticket. :-( I'm definitely pleased with my purchases. I got Dead Can Dance's _Aion_, Suzanne Vega's _Days of Open Hand_, Bel Canto's _Birds of Passage_, and Tribe's _Abort_, all used except DCD. I really like Bel Canto. How does _Birds of Passage_ compare with their other stuff? Anyway, I'm off to write a nasty letter to Ticketmaster (like it will do any good)... Perhaps we need to petition the manufacturers and record companies... -- John ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 28 Feb 94 13:05:23 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: ectobabble The Tori Ticket quest mentioned earlier by Jeff Hanson was quite an experience. This looks like a driving intensive show, since we've already put in 2.5 hours in the car just to get tickets. I had never been to a place that was more on top of selling tix than these Music Plus stores were. The people working acted like each ticket was for them and they were dieing to see the show. They came outside and asked the first few people in line how many tickets they wanted, and started entering them in the computer 5 minutes before they went on sale. Of course, they didn't get anything, but they kept banging away, popping out tickets as fast as they possibly could. We left with such an incredible adrenaline rush (and Tori tickets!) that it could only be satisfied by major CD purchases. Lou's Records in Leucadia was an incredible find. Keep it in mind when you are trecking out to nearby Carlsbad in a few years to play in Legoland:) They had Rearmament, Warpaint, Ecto and Rhodesongs (ranging from $12.50 to $13.50), with had a key word in that sentence. In there imports I found Bel Canto's White Out Condition for $12.50 and Jeff found a Lena Lovitch box set he had never seen before (3 discs). I got a bounced ecto-mail message friday that is about a month old!! I agree with Larry - for me, the searching (and eventually finding) is almost as much fun as having the disc. Sure, I could log on to CDC and buy just about anything anytime, but finding a great store like Lou's and making wonderful discoveries, well, it's just a great part of the game. The latest pulse had a Realworld ad that said a new Sheila Chandra disc was coming out soon, entitled "The Zen Kiss". Big article in the LA Times entertainment section about latest trends in new age music, talking about how hard it is to define and that it used to be meditative instrumentals, but then along came Clannad, Enya and Sheila Chandra to widen the category. Ok, I thought it was all pretty silly (like Clannad just came along a year or two or something, hmmmph), but I didn't realize Sheila Chandra was popular anywhere outside ecto. Do they actually play her on new age stations? The Wherehouse chain, which unloads the most ludicrously underpriced used discs, practically covers them with stickers that are virtually impossible to get off. On the front of the jewel box is a round, dime sized used sticker and a price sticker. On the back (or sometimes on the paper on the insice under the back!) is a new bar code to cover the original. And then, to top it off, they have a spade shaped hole puncher which they apply to the cd booklet! I complained about there unnecessarily mangling the book and got an answer akin to the silver tabs are there for your protection in stupidity. They have to punch the holes so that people can't return the used discs as new, even though you can't return a new disc without the receipt, which clearly says what disc you bought. Makes good sense, no? What I do is cut the sticker at the narrow part and carefully peel each half off the case. Sometimes no residue remains, but usually not. Then I stick a piece of tape over the glue residue and rip it off quickly. This almost always takes care of it. For really bad glue, like from price stickers put directly on the jewel cases of used CDs, I rub with vegetable oil to dissolve the glue and then wash with soap and water to clean off the oil. This doesn't damage the plastic and works much better than alcohol.
