I doubted very much that _Dark Adapted Eye_ could be that much better, and expected to be disappointed. However, after finally listening to it, **WOW**!!!! Musically, Dax wanders all over the map, from straightforward folk through straightforward (and great!) rock and roll through near chaos through odd mutant strains and combinations. An example of the latter is one song with a country western framework, though warped with a rock rhythm, a sitar instead of a guitar, and a few Middle Eastern touches. Even the more straightforward songs receive many odd delightful instrumental touches. Very little is repeated, and those Middle Eastern flavors are about the only motif that pops up throughout the album. Oh, yes. Dax' voice also unifies the record, a full wide- ranging voice, which she puts through some amazing paces and even distortions. Lyrically, finding any unifying or even common themes is difficult. The closest I can come is that she mostly concentrates on decision making -- the difficulties and uncertainties of knowing the right choice to make and living with the consequences of wrong and even right decisions. A sense of ethics and even religion underlies many lyrics. Some of the songs also have the feel of a folktale, though I don't know if they were invented by her or were taken from her culture. The album has nineteen songs and runs almost 70min, but I would be hard pressed to point out even one weak song. The quantity and variety was so overwhelming that my mind had to shut down someways into the album. It wasn't until about the fourth listen that I could handle the whole thing. In the week since I first listened to it, I've caught about eight different songs from this album running through my head. Rating: ***** Awesome! Must have! As always, your mileage may vary. _Exorcise This Wasteland_ -- Single Gun Theory I liked their _Like Stars in My Hand_, which had a number of excellent songs with a dark thematic consistency. Its only shortcoming were several weak meandering songs. Well, _Exorcise This Wasteland_ was filled with similar weak songs. Nothing on the album grabbed my ear and only a couple rose slightly above the muck. The music, practically all synthesized, tended to drone with little melody or harmony. The lyrics were buried in the drone, and Jacqui Hunt's low, curiously full yet flat voice could not cut through it. Without a lyric sheet, I had a lot of trouble making out the words, and what I caught didn't encourage me to dig deeper. They seemed to cover oblique political and societal critiques (though the use of sampled voices added an interesting and necessary dimension to them) and explorations of a depressed emotional internal landscape. Given the albums' dates, 1987's _Exorcise This Wasteland_ may be their debut or close to it, so this album is likely the group's trying out their wings, trying to get their ideas down. By 1991's _Like Stars in My Hands_, they had found their voice. The intervening (and succeeding albums) should be interesting. Does anyone know what their other albums are (if any)? Rating: **ooo Not recommended. Realizing that my favorite Cocteau Twins album is the last one I've listened to, I remain ... Although it is not mentioned on the CD, _Dark Adapted Eye_ is actually a greatest hits album covering at least four years (and several albums and singles) of Danielle Dax's career. If you dig a little deaper and listen to a few of her albums and singles, you will discover an even wider range of musical styles than presented on _Dark Adapted Eye_. Here's what I just sent to fte (it was on around the 75 min mark): === Subject: "Possession" on US MTV & local radio "Possession" really blows me away, and can bring me to tears in a good way, although I'm not sure why. The video for it, which was on US MTV's 120 Minutes, is no different in that respect. :) It was more sensual than I expected but Sarah really took my breath away. :) I really don't know if this was it's first MTV showing but I watch 120 Minutes most of the time so I think it is (as opposed to the rest of MTV which I almost never watch). To think I could have talked to her on the same day. I was asleep but the real reason I didn't was because I didn't have any idea what I'd ask or say to her, other than come to Tucson after Phoenix. :) I figured others probably had better things to talk to her about. I only have Solace so I'm no expert. I've been wanting to change that for over two years and will be. Still it makes me sad to have passed up the opportunity but makes me realize I should be grabbing more opportunities. I wish I could go to her concert in Phoenix on the 28th, and although it is a 3 hour drive from where I live (2 from other parts of Tucson), that isn't the reason I can't go. It's not worth explaining here. I have heard "Possession" on the radio twice, on two different stations, which is more than I heard any Kate. I *rarely* listen to the radio though. However, the first time was two weeks ago and the DJ said "no word on an album as yet". Well, I called him up, set him straight, and told him about her Phoenix date. He didn't say anything on air though. I won't be surprised if there isn't a huge turnout in Phoenix, especially considering that her album just came out and is just getting airplay in Tucson (although I can't speak for Phoenix). I hope she takes that into consideration and doesn't get discouraged about coming back to Arizona in the future. I should fax the last Nettwerk news schedule to that DJ I mentioned. Maybe it'll help, who knows. :) /-\ |_ |= >< arg@kilimanjaro.opt-sci.arizona.edu (MST=GMT-7) MST3k 42 KT "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." Date: Mon, 21 Feb 1994 14:09:50 -0600 (CST) Ah, goodness, I can't believe I refrained from spending my every last cent on CDs this weekend. Whenever I travel outside my usual sphere, I have to check all the record stores and see if, just if, they might have Happy stuff. In Chattanooga, the store I went to had RI, RII, RS, and Equipoise, and I was so very very pleased! Especially since I already have those discs, so I wasn't enticed to buy them. I did however, pick up a Meryn Cadell CD for $2 because I remember hearing about her here, and then had to get a full price Sarah M "Touch" CD, and was counselled not to buy FtE just because I needed to curb my CD spending habits. THEN, I was at the Tower Records in Atlanta. And my boyfriend/ financial advisor had gone into another store... The threat of spending money lurked over my head. I went to the R section - they had EVERYTHING, except RII, they even had a display of Warpaint discs. I wanted so very much to finish my collection with Ecto, Rearmament, and Warpaint. I was so torn, they were Full Price. I managed to restrain myself, by carrying them around the store for a half hour, just enjoying the feel of the Happy discs in my hand. They also had a Happy Rhodes section under H, so I redistributed the discs so there was at least one of each in both spots :) I did buy Kirsty MacColl's "Kite" (which was on sale) and Iris DeMent's "Infamous Angel" (which wasn't, but was cheaper than normal "full price") and managed to escape yet again from a wonderful record store with only two CDs, satisfied with my purchases. I haven't gotten a chance to listen to the Meryn Cadell yet, since we didn't get back here to Tallahassee until 6 am... Just thought I'd share with y'all the joy of finding Happy stuff wherever I went. My b/fa (see above) thinks it sounds like I'm a horrible addict, but he likes the music I buy, so he'll live with it :) 'Til later, Kath ======================================================================== Date: 21 Feb 94 16:07:28 EST From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Because the Night A friend of mine is looking for the original version of Because the Night by Bruce. Have a seat, Kristin. Take notes, Aimee. There's a new self-described "girl with guitar" from Boston, and she has plenty to bring to the party! So let's say you're at the Stanford coffeehouse on a Friday night because a certain ectophile (thanks D^2!) said you should be. There's a reserved-looking woman with round glasses setting up some guitars, and she's justifiably peeved because the members of the new-agey guitar combo picked to open for her are really stoned and generally getting in her way. Then she steps up to the microphone and without warning attacks her guitar, which seizes your attention until she starts singing, at which point all you can do is wonder how anyone so stereotypically sweet-and-innocent-looking can have a *voice* like that. And then you realize that that was just the sound check. Through the course of her actual concert, she warms up to the crowd, makes wry little jokes, and plays her music with such total conviction that you can't even tell she records with a band. You decide that this is not a woman who should have to put up with apathetic student audiences (like Friday's) or clubs where she can hardly hear herself over the thrash band playing a couple rooms away (as in Sunday's show in San Francisco). So anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Melissa Ferrick is cool, and you should help her out by picking up her terrific debut album _Massive Blur_ on Atlantic, and if her solo tour comes near you should go to it so that you can *SEE* Melissa break guitar strings faster than her assistant can replace them (one on Friday night and three on Sunday..."Fuck fuck fuck!"), *HEAR* "Juliana Hatfield," Melissa's celebration of being on the same label as Juliana "and Liz Phair too and Tori Amos too," which is the funniest live-only treat performed since the Judybats' "Alliwannadois F*ck Your Hair," *MELT* to heartfelt lyrics that jump out and grab you when you least expect it, and *TALK* to Melissa and reaffirm to yourself that, yes, performers can be friendly and approachable even under the worst circumstances. Today, Washington's Birthday, the rain of the past couple of days is gone, the snow is melted, and the sun is out. It's also cold again after the warm spell, but nothing's perfect :-). I took time out to go see the early show of _The Snapper_--a film I recommend. Saturday, there was a free concert downtown by an eclectic group of local art- ists including former Drovers flutist Kathleen Keane, and Maestro Subgum and the Whole. Everything MJM has said about them in these pages is true. The latest _Computer Underground Digest_ has a couple of good pieces about the clipper chip controversy. If interested, let me know and I'll send them on. WRT Tori's exegesis of _Cornflake Girl_: I never knew there was such a good explanation for only bran flakes, never corn-, coming with raisins attached :-) WRT the purloining of _The Scream_: As Chicago ectophiles know, political art theft was a going concern in Chicago years before the Norwegians stole the idea :-). WRT MJM's query: Patti Smith did a cover of "Because the Night" on the "Easter " album (circa 1977). Thought in passing: is the _Under the Pink_ poster, with Tori surrounded by lab glassware, likely to become a popular icon with women in science, or those wishing to promote said cause? WRT Holly's query: Nina Simone is indeed a prominent jazz singer of long stan- ding, with a long discography that should be easy and inexpensive to get at least some of. Film trivia buffs may remember that she was Bridget Fonda's favorite singer in _Point of No Return_, and perhaps that Sandra Bernhard did some rather low-grade covers of NS in _Without You I'm Nothing_.
