So, next weekend we are headed from Chicago to Kansas City in order to get closer to Vickie, our ectoma, by hearing her radio show live (ok, recorded) over the airwaves. Does anyone want to join us, or are there any ectophiles in the KC area? Vickie: it would be *wonderful* if you could make an apperance there so we could meet you in person! If not, could you send a life-sized poster of yourself to the radio station for us to pick up? Thanks! -valerie & chip P.S. This is a joke. Three hundred and eighty eight of them. There's more fuzziness in the 110 EctoPosts though, and that'd be why I like it so much here. :) My phone interview with Bob Geldof was postponed until today, when it became an in-person interview and was then cancelled at the last minute. Bah humbug. :) Interesting CDs of this week included the new Stina Nordenstam CD (thanks Paul, one Margot coming your way as soon as it shows here!), which I've only played once, but I think I'm going to like a lot. I still don't like the vocal treatment Stina's producer inflicts on her, but you get used to it. More on this once I'm more familiar with it. My Find Of The Week was a John Foxx compilation called "Assembly", which has all the best John Foxx tracks on it, including the cinematic "Underpass", the hard-to-get "This City" and the beautiful, luscious, EctoPhilic "The Garden". It was compiled by Foxx himself, and as such unfortunately misses "Dancing Like A Gun". Still, it's great to hear the early stuff on CD. I'm probably the only person on Ecto who likes John Foxx, but ah well... :-) I also am in Tori Overload Mode, with the album on CD finally, along with the two singles. Yum. Sigh. Purr. I'm off to Sydney on Thursday for a week, and as such won't be posting until I get back the following Thursday. But mail me anyway, I always wanted to see "89 new messages" showing when I turned on the computer :) I'll post before I go... Now, for a bit of catching up with things: following this is a short post I sent to rdt earlier tonight - once I read it I couldn't help but feel it needed a home in Ecto. :) Meredith is as behind in mail as me but writes: > So, does anybody know of a music-oriented TV show called Rage? "Rage" in Australia (it was me who mentioned the Jane video - they've had both her clips on high rotation :-) is an all-night music-video-only (no host) show on broadcast TV, on the national government channel. It airs all night Friday and Saturday, and also for around 3 hours on Thursdays for new releases. They play exciting, new things as well as the usual, and it's an essential part of life here. I doubt that there's an affiliate show in the US - it's probably just coincidence. "Rage" here is airing "Cornflake Girl" regularly now, though. I might not have qualified my probably far too harsh dismissal of the album last time, but I have only listened to it once. Steve, this exact sort of thing has been done already by Klaus in the form of the Happy Rhodes Encyclopedia - lyrics, interviews, reviews, other info, all in a handy (but big!) hypertext file. It's currently available for Windows and Amiga (and NeXt soon, apparently), but Klaus has a nifty program that auto-converts his master file to other formats, as long as he knows what the hypertext "rules" of that format are. I know nothing about .INF but if you mail Klaus I'm sure he can help you out. If you still want to do your own .INF, then you'll find all the info you could possibly need in the encyclopedia... Vickie hears about Jane live... > > The videos for 'An Angel Stepped Down' and 'Temple' are incredible! > > Temple?? What was it like? She showed no video for Temple in Detroit! A case in point - This is what This is how I ended up hearing Tori's music for the first time. I'd read about her before (the NME article titled "Ginger Nut") and thought that this was something I must investigate, but did nothing further about it until I heard many people talking about this bizarre cover version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Tori Amos. I made a mental note to ask Warner about it, and a few days later when I was in there I did exactly that. They sent me away with a bunch of the usual pop drivel and a copy of the "Winter" UK Limited Edition, which was the standard CD single release here in Australia. I got home, put the CD in, and played "Teen Spirit". I was amused and quite pleased with what she'd done with the song, but it was only when I went back to track 1 and played "Winter" that it hit me. I stopped what I was doing. My heart was in my mouth. What *was* this? It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever heard. Ditto for her reading of "Thank You", which left me with a lump in my throat and prompted me to travel back into the city to buy a copy of "Little Earthquakes" immediately. That was Mid-1992. Since then I have joined the internet, found out about rdt, and through rdt have heard music I never dreamed existed; Happy Rhodes, Sarah McLachlan, Tribe, Mae Moore, Jane Siberry, and many more; my fondness for Tori's music prompted my being introduced to the music of Margot Smith by a fellow writer who knew I'd like it (turns out she wrote the initial press release... :-). The chain started with Tori's cover of "Teen Spirit". Maybe I would have heard her anyway. Probably by now I certainly would. But for me at the time Tori was the first of what has been many "discoveries", an artist who it seemed only I knew existed, which made meeting fellow fans even more enjoyable. So that's my ToriStory. In short, that Limited "Winter" single introduced me to her music, and in turn to much more. Music that changed my life. If you enjoyed this post, you'd enjoy Ecto, the Happy Rhodes mailing list that's a world unto itself and is possibly the only flame-free zone on the entire Internet. :-) - Anthony (the one who has now stopped hypenating, and who lives in Melbourne, but a more Southerly bit of Melbourne than the other Melbourne Anthony does.) ******* -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Horan, Melbourne Australia - anthony@xymox.apana.org.au "All told, Under The Pink is small but likeably formed; ideal for those herbal-tea moments." - Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian reviewing the new "Victoria Amos" album. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 14 Feb 1994 16:17:13 CST From: Subject: Tangentially related stoff Last week, along with a few more used CDs I bought from the Drovers, I bought a used comic book about a character called EctoKid, with the slogan on the cover, "Welcome to the Ectosphere--hope you survive your stay." Apparently, the dog was very afraid of thunderstorms, and had to be tranquilized before the storm arrived, or would spend hours trying to "dig" into furniture, or the floor, or whatever. Perhaps, before he found you (or you found him), something traumatic happened to him in a thunderstorm. Perhaps another dog he knew was badly injured (or killed by lightening). I suppose I might sound a little overly sensitive here, but I just couldn't laugh at the "digging," considering that as a child I had a fear of thunderstorms as well. However, my fear was that they would turn into tornadoes, and I would be swept away and dashed against a tree. I still have a fear of tornadoes, although it doesn't seem rational, considering that I've never been close to one. The way the post ended, "that was sam," made me believe that he was dead now. I guess that's really what made me so sad. WRT the recent Pink Floyd thread: I love _The Wall_, _Momentary Lapse Of Reason_, and _Dark Side Of The Moon_, but plead ignorance to almost all the rest of their material. I saw them in concert at Veterans' Stadium in Philadelphia about five years ago (or thereabouts), and it changed my life too. See, I had left my family behind when I went away to college (in 1979), and I truly believed I wanted to leave it at that. Well, all those years later, my sister Trish was looking for someone to go to the Floyd concert with, and I heard this through my mother. I volunteered to meet her there (I was arriving by Amtrak from New York, she by car from Harrisburg, Pa.). We went to the concert, and later stayed at the home of a friend of the family's. I got to know my sister in an entirely different light. So very glad I did! Also wanted to comment on the Melissa Ferrick album, _Massive Blur_. I love her voice, love her lyrics. But largely, I find the music to be, well, um, boring. It tends to run together, IMHO. There are six songs I like a lot (can't recall all of them, but I know that "Massive Blur" and "Love Song" are two of them), but the rest kind of disappointed me. I will, however, keep listening, in hopes that the music will grow on me. I guess I better get back to work (everybody's bothering me already). -Sam P.S. I sent my money yesterday for the newsletter from Happy. I can't wait! ======================================================================== From: anthony baxter Subject: Re: Why Tuesday release dates??? Don't worry Tim, you aren't the only one. :) I've mentioned before that Tori doesn't do much for me, though I do like "God". I haven't found any other song of hers that I like. As you said, "Oh well", and it's nice to know that Ecto is a tolerant place... :) John (still trying to catch up)... ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
