I don't know if I'd call myself a diehard fan, but I do have 5 or 6 Floyd CDs and have seen 'em twice. _The Final Cut_ is definitely Waters' masterpiece, lyrically and musically. I do have minor complaints here and there, but overall, the requiem for the postwar dream is perhaps the single best concept album ever. The lyrical development is phenomenal, and Waters' talents were never more evident. Even now, the sheer brilliance of the lyrics can startle me. I can't think of a single song or suite that I would sooner publish as poetry. And the music is phenomenal as well, adding yet more emotional punch to lyrics. I'm also a huge fan of _Animals_ but while that has cynicism galore, the bitterness and personal nature isn't there. _Pros and Cons_ also has the cynicism, bitterness, and personal aspect, but it's too surreal--it doesn't strike close enough to home; it's perhaps *too* personal, whereas _The Final Cut_ brings out the fears and worries of a person, a nation, in its expression of disappointment at the shattering of the postwar dream. Yeah, I like _The Final Cut_. ;-) "Hold on to the dream..." (also home to one of my favourite live bands, NoMeansNo :) She has two albums, Oceanview Motel, and Bohemia. The first is kind of country/folk, acoustic guitars and relatively clean instrumentation. However, the second sounds kind of like the Church, mostly because it was produced by Steve Kilby in Australia. Her voice is the ethereal, kind of wispy type. I haven't seen her live, so I have no idea what her performance is like. IMO, her songwriting is not as strong or consistent as the ``top'' ecto-artists but she has some very nice songs and her albums are, overall, pleasant to listen to. Personally, I think Mae would be better in a band with at least one other good song-writer, to provide more variety and balance out some of the weak bits. Any other opinions? From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu > _The Final Cut_ is definitely Waters' masterpiece, lyrically and musically. Yeah, it really is more of his album than PF (one member of PF isn't on it even). To fully understand my review here, I might as well chip in mine. When I first listen to an album, I throw it on the old (literally -- celebrating its eighth birthday this month) CD player and play it while going about my other varied and sundry personal duties -- twice. For the third time, I sit down and closely listen to it. Well, Kirsty MacColl's _Titanic Days_ didn't catch my ear for the first casual two listens. In fact, it didn't catch my ear for about the first five songs of the third serious listen. However, then it started dragging me in (or vice versa :) ). I don't know what got in the way (possibly her voice), but I now love this album. Lyrically, she concentrates on the never-ending struggles between men and women, covering an amazing range of emotion, from wistful to angry, innocent to naughty, accepting to denial, growth to destructive, fantasy to reality. Yet she draws no sharp lines or conclusions, treating the characters and situations with exceptional depth and ambiguity. About the only constant is the darkness of the songs, again covering a wide range of darkness, but none leaving much room for optimism. As a writer, her lyrics are solidly written, spiced by an occasional sharp image and wonderful turn of phrase, such as: I've been the token woman all my life The token daughter and the token wife Now I've collected tokens one by one 'Til I've saved enough to buy a gun Musically, if forced to categorize, I'd put it in the pop category. In many songs, the music is actually quite upbeat, working wonderfully against the darkness of her lyrics, mostly strikingly in "Titanic Days". She weaves many instruments together, with many wonderful little touches here and there. About my only complaint is her voice, which slightly grates in my ear. It took some time for me to get used to. Rating: ****o (with a fifth star possible, if it ages well). Highly recommended for any Ectophile, though, as always, your mileage may vary. A Cocteau Twins album in which is worth saying a word or two about lyrics. Not only does Liz Fraser sing English words for most (all?) of the songs on _Four-Calendar Cafe_, but she sings full coherent English sentences. Someone could even start a decent argument about whether she is trying to put an idea forth. However, from what I caught, the sentences just expressed a single thought, none especially noteworthy. The sentences I did catch even had nothing to do with the song titles. In fact, the title of the first song is sung in the second. Well, the above paragraph was written with tongue firmly in cheek. While I did expend a few minor efforts at catching the words, I found it much more productive and enjoyable to let the flow of calming music wash over me. I don't consider this their best album (_Head Over Heels_ currently tops an admittedly unstable list), since none of the melody or music really caught my ear. Yet, as with every Cocteau Twin album, each time that I've listened to it, I've like it better and better. They always sneak up on me. Who knows how far up my list this one will end up. Each time, they have really rocked! :) The Hendrix song that they did was "Castles Made of Sand", and their version of "Tomorrow Wendy" was stunning. I just can't say enough about the entire show. It was magical. :) Unfortunately, this is the last time we'll be able to see Concrete Blonde, since they ARE breaking up after the tour. Johnette will be doing some solo stuff, and spending time with her recently opened Mexican art gallery in LA. I'm just glad that the parting was a mutual agreement, and they have a good attitude about it. On another note, I got a letter from Happy on Saturday regarding my "Happy Cards" idea. For those who weren't around a few month ago, or might have forgotten, I came up with the idea of printing up some business-type cards that we could give to prospective Happy fans. The cards would have the AG address and list all of Happy's albums with their order numbers. I wanted to make sure that I had Happy's permission to do this, since it is kind of promotional. I sent her a sample card that I made myself, just so she'd get an idea of what I was thinking. She wrote me back and gave the offical go ahead. :) So, I will now begin the process of finding a printing shop in the Baltimore-Washington area (Holly, Jeff, Sue, anyone with ideas?) that will print up some business cards at a reasonable price. One thing that I need to know though, is how many people are interested in having some of these cards. At this point, I don't know how much they will be, but it'd be nice to have an estimate of how many need to be printed. I would imagine that the larger then number printed, the cheaper each card is. So, if you want a lot of them, or if everyone wants several, it'll make it cheaper for all of us. :) And just think of all the FUN things you could do with the Happy cards. :) Give them to friends or give them to people in record stores. Become a card-carrying Happy fan. :) That's about all for now. Hubble is doing fine, though you probably won't be reading about it in the paper. The press doesn't care about us anymore, since there isn't anything bad to say... :) Take care everyone, John ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Mon, 14 Feb 1994 07:23:22 Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... i*i*i*i*i*i *************** ***HAPPY******* ********BIRTHDAY*** ******************* ****** Doug Burks ***** *********************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Doug Burks Tue February 14 1956 Blank Jim Sturnfield Thu February 18 1954 Aquarius Juha Kannisto Wed February 18 1970 Aquarius Linda Saboe Tue February 20 1951 aimless Paula Shanks Mon February 25 1952 Pisces Brni Mojzes Fri February 26 1965 the vanishing boy Pamela Pociluk Fri February 28 1964 Pisces Tim Steele March 8 Pisces Bob R.
