This is the polemic I was going to post last night, but decided not to. Back when Kiri (hi, Kiri! :) got her radio show at Ole Miss and noted that there is a station policy stating that you can't play two songs with female vocals in a row, I started thinking about programming policies at other stations, and began to keep track of what I hear on the radio and see on eMpTV (when they're showing videos). And you know, in all this time the only time I have heard two songs in a row by female vocalists on a commercial music station was last week on eMpTV when I was watching Alternative Nation in hopes of taping Tori's "God" video, and they showed Sinead O'Connor's "Mandinka" and Bjork's "Big Time Sensuality" back to back. (God, I HATE the remix of "BTS" and the video sucks rocks, but that's a rant for later.) I was stunned. Usually, when you see Bjork or Juliana Hatfield on Alternative Nation, it's a good bet you're not going to see Tori, because they've shot their load of XX chromosome pairs for the hour. Of course, in the 90-minute period of "Dreamtime" later that night, they didn't show *one* woman. Not even a band with a female bass player. The question remains, Why??? Ask your average grunt on the street why the Grammys are combining the two categories, and s/he will say, "'Coz there aren't any women making music." Judging from the exposure your average grunt on the street is getting to female performers, that attitude isn't surprising. Listen to K-Rock for eight solid hours, and you'll maybe hear the same song you always hear by The Pretenders, that annoying Quarterflash song from 1983, and the Breeders to spice it up, and that's the only women you're going to hear from all day. Pah. I know I'm preaching to the choir here. I said basically the same thing I just wrote on my show yesterday -- I decided to explain to my listeners just why Champagne Jam is the show it is, and a few people called to thank me. At least there's one teensy thing I can do to circumvent this. But I'm not going to have my radio show forever, and I'm seriously think- ing now of what I can do in the future to show the world that people like Happy Rhodes and Victoria Williams and Laura Love and Jane Siberry and Sarah McLachlan *do* exist, and that they're only a small fraction of the women who are out there making wonderful music. [packs up her soapbox and heads for the door] A few more tidbits, while I'm here: - woj is safe and sound and wondering just why the hell he's in Spain - he should be back sometime next week. - Sarah is on the first page of Billboard this week, along with a slew of other Canadian musicians who are making waves in the international scene (not Jane, alas, but they used the picture from the "Possession" single for Sarah, and I'll say it again, *melt*). It's an interesting story, but Sarah gets no more than a cursory mention here and there. - Picked up the issue of Spin with the Tori and Kate features in, and while I was at it found a zine called "B-Side" that contains some quite good interviews with Dead Can Dance, The Cranberries, The Breeders, and David Sylvian and Robert Fripp. (Todd Rundgren too, in case anyone out there cares.) It's a pretty good magazine, judging from this one issue I've seen. The majority of the staff seems to be female, including the two editors-in-chief, so even though it's an "alternative" publication it has, to me, a more interesting tone than, say, Alternative Press. This might be a good forum for some Happy exposure when the next album comes out... I'll have to let Suzanne know. - "Yes Anastasia" (on _Under The Pink_) is a total mess musically, but as anyone who has seen me go on and on about "The Big Sky" and "Love And Anger", can attest, I tend to like overproduction. :> Goddess, this song is brilliant.... as is the album. Sigh. Happy birthdays to those whom I've blown off, welcome to all the Newbiephiles, and good riddance to all the nimrods who have no-so-politely taken their leave. For those who don't know, John was in the original 10000 Maniacs (up until Wishing Chair, I think) and he & Mary have put out two albums. There is some resemblance to the Maniacs in their music (ie, if you like one, you'll almost definitely like the other), but they don't sound the same. Mary has a deeper, richer voice than Nathalie Merchant, and also plays violin, which gives the music an entirely different feel. I've seen them twice, and they were wonderful both times. THe bad news is they open for Warren Zevon, who I've also seen twice, and who was mediocre both times. The schedule has clubs and phone numbers, but I am going to be lazy and only post those for the shows this week. If anyone wants more info on the later dates, send me mail and I'll post it. Also, they have a 90 minute limeted edition cassette of their recent tour of the northeast with a band consisting of JOhn Ashton of the Psychedelic Furs on guitar, Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes) on drums and Brad JOnes on bass and backing vocals. I finally got through to Patricia (the Booking Director at Symphony Space), and she said "Yes, Tori Amos has *just* been confirmed for March 30." How do I know she's so hot? Well, Patricia guessed what I was calling about before I could spit it out, which means that *lots* of people are calling! She's only just today signed the confirmation with Delsener Productions, and she's in the process of drawing up the contract, so wherever Anthony got those tour dates, they're certainly hot off the press! So here's the deal. Delsener Productions sets up the advertising, and they will be running an ad in the Village Voice. When this ad will appear is currently up in the air. Patricia doubts highly that it will be in tomorrow's issue (considering the fact that the contract isn't signed yet), but told me to check next week. Of course, the Voice is available late Tuesday, so I'll have to buy it early. As soon as the ad appears, tickets will go on sale. Patricia also told me to check with the box office next week, as they may know when tix will go on sale by then, but they don't know anything for sure until Delsener runs his ad. She said response to this concert has been so large, that there will probably be some kind of message about availability on the evening answering machine tape. Symphony Space holds 800 people. The box office hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 7 pm. Tickets are also available over the phone (212 864-5400) T through Su, 12 noon to 6 pm. The theatre is located at 95th and Broadway. Tix will run anywhere from $15 - $30 (she doesn't know the price yet, but that's how much previous shows have gone for). Hope anyone who isn't in New York (or who [perish the thought] doesn't care about Tori) didn't find this post too obnoxious (or even tedious :-)). -Sam ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 8 Feb 1994 17:07:00 CST From: Subject: Anybody want to take this one? I cannot help but respond to this one! I know this is all subjective opinion but... The remix of Big Time Sensuality is INCREDIBLE!!! It is so upbeat and fun, it hearkens back to the best times of the Sugarcubes. It just makes me want to get up and dance, the same way someone else on ecto described Eat the Music. I love the video too. That is saying something too. Stuart can attest that I have no tolerance or interest in music videos, often even the ones by my favorite artists. Only rarely does that special video come along that I enjoy. In the video, Bjork comes across as really fun and personable. I imagine that if I were around her, I would never stop laughing. In contrast, Natalie Merchant, although beautiful and cool, scares me. I would constantly be afraid to open my mouth around her for fear she would glare at me. I have to say that I am truly appalled by the recent moves made by the Grammys. It is evidence for my suspicion that there is an unspoken conspiracy to keep the music industry male. No record deals, no airplay, no promotion, no sales, no Grammys, can only lead to no known female artists! Someone needs to wake up and smell the excess of testosterone! I am trying in my small way to change the situation. Our mega-station 99X told me they still have not received any Happy material. (And the DJ was not aware of the new Sinead song! --grievous sin.) Would anybody like to let me know about the history of Happy and any efforts to make a music video? Ranted out, Jeremy "Racing turtles, the grapefruit is winning." WRT Larry's personal email to me: I unfortunately missed the report on the 10 PM news on factors in the high cost of CD's, but intuitively, among the major putative rationales for this--notwithstanding that CD's reportedly cost no more, and maybe less, to manufacture than cassettes--would be that the bett- er sound quality of CD's justifies the massive price differential. They'll probably alibi, too, that the higher payments to major artists of late are a driving factor in the higher price of many new releases. But in the aggreg- ate, I would think, the major factor is the usual: a combination of greed on the part of the industry, and spinelessness on the part of the consumer. In a related vein, WBEZ reported this morning that Rose Records has dropped its former expansion plans, and will close some stores, because of difficulty in weathering the price competition from Circuit City and Best Buy. The report made the point that the retailer's profit margin on CD's is lower than on other formats. Mike said of Jeff: >It IS kinda fun watching his eyes bulge out when you ask things like "Who's >Cat Stevens"? Wonder how he'd react if asked things like who Yusef Islam used to be :-). Too bad that Tori came and went without anyone knowing about it. Would have been especially interesting to see if she pulled a better interviewer this time than the mope who spake to her on the same station last year. WRT MTV's reluctance to play women: Keep in mind that this is the same chann- el that, scarcely a decade ago, raised eyebrows with its reluctance to play blacks (though that did, at least, have the latent function of driving Herbie Hancock to produce an imaginative video with robots playing his tune, in the hope that it would thereby have a better chance for heavy rotation). I recall reading somewhere recently that some megacorporation wants to start a competing video channel; if we can find out whom, we should go to work on them to play our kind of music :-). A couple of post to folk_music have made laudatory mention of past concerts by Vance Gilbert. Off to scurry home before I mutate into a snowman. But in the aggreg- >ate, I would think, the major factor is the usual: a combination of greed on >the part of the industry, and spinelessness on the part of the consumer. > Well, I saw the report last night, and Mitch just about his it exactly. It reported at CDs are incredibly cheap to make -- just 80 cents per disc. The report noted that CD sales are rising so rapidly (up almost 20% from last year, I think), that there is little incentive to record companies to lower the prices, even though they promised that they would do just that when deleting the LP. It mentioned the used CD market and its climb, and how some record companies are upset about this (but curiously there was no mention of the suit against The Wherehouse chain -- does anyone know what happened with this suit?) In conclusion the anchor implied that the public was to blame for continuing to patronize the CD market. Reports like this get my hackles up. Why the hell are CDs so damned expensive? And now, the price of cassettes are even going up (or at least are harder to find on sale), so I'm left to choose between a $9 cassette or a $12 CD (sale price). I combat this by refusing to pay full price for any CD. I try to buy used as much as possible, but I'll buy new for my favorite artists. I just do something really simple -- I will call around the Monday before a release goes on sale to find the best price I can, rather than just dropping by the closest record store and paying $16. And if anyone record store says that it won't be on sale, then I laugh in their faces. Does anyone know of an e-mail address where I can send a complaint letter to record companies about the price of CDs? BTW, the report last night also mentioned Garth Brooks as being strongly against the used CD market. He's earning some absurd profit off of each CD (another thing that pisses me off...I wish the bulk of the profit would go to the artist, not the jerks at the record companies who leech off of the artist's talents) >Off to scurry home before I mutate into a snowman. > > Mitch Isn't the snow fantastic?! Yes, there is, though it won't stop him forever. But you should make his live miserable by deleting his account. Of course you can't do this by yourself, so you have to find a person who can. If the nazi is posting from a big site you should mail the postmaster of this site by mailing a mail complaining about the guy to postmaster@the.rest.of.the.address.the.nazi.uses If that doesn't help very quick (< 1 week) the guy himself is probably the postmaster. Then it becomes a bit more difficult. Try to get at the 'Received:' header lines. (You might have to save the complete mail into a separate mailbox file.) The Received: header lines do list all the systems a mail walked along to its destination. Find out the system after the system that was originally used (that is a Received: line that contains something to the effect of "Received: from the.nazi.site by the.site.you.are.searching". Then write your mail to postmaster@the.site.you.are.searching and you should have some reaction. If that postmaster is reasonable he'll cut off the nazi's connection. If you still don't get a reaction you'll have to search the next site on the chain to you. Some postmaster WILL react, since noone wants to be cut off by the one before him. Forget almost all about this if the nazi is using an anonymous posting&mail service. In that case you would have to try to persuade the maintainer of the anon-service to either delete the nazi's account or even to lay it open (he probably won't do the latter one). If you just want to get him off that mailing list you might also have partial success by telling the list maintainer to ignore any posting the nazi is making. Depending on the list software used he might be able to filter out mail from certain accounts. Bye, Uli -- An EMACS missionary is brooding over a problem, obviously puzzled. I would like to add to the classified ads a list of addresses, phone numbers, artists handled, etc. for the smaller record companies that produce Ecto-fodder and maybe even mail-order (and Internet-order?) music companies (Ladyslipper, Noteworthy, etc). It would really be nice to have all of this in one place. Maybe I can even nail down Aural Gratification's address, which I keep losing. :) Note that I'm not asking for approval for this idea. I'm asking for information! :) It would really go nice with the MUSIC WANTED classified ad section. Alan, could you kick this off for me by e- mailing me the information for Nettwerk? By the way, thanks for the inspiration! I hope this will be of help for everyone. Though freezing my deepest buns off, I remain ...
