USA TODAY) had a feature story on Tori Amos and a review of _Under The Pink_. A nice picture was included. Here is the review: MUSIC REVIEW Edna Gundersen The Power of Pink is Personal Tori Amos is over the blues on "Under The Pink"(*** out of four), a declaration of independence from a profoundly uninhibited artist whose songs are as pretty as they are disturbing. More challenging than her quirky "Little Earthquakes", the midtempo, reflective _Pink_ finds her blasting patriarchy and breaking free of religious repression, victimhood, and sexual guilt. These are big strides for an intensely emotional singer/songwriter who first drew startled attention with her anguished account of rape in 1992's "Me And A Gun". Amos relishes incongruity, teetering between new age and grunge (after all, she covered Nirvana's _Smells Like Teen Spirit_ as a dreamy ballad). She can be tender or brazen, trippy or icily frank. Wisely, her voice and piano, uncrowded by the bland orchestral filler, are _Pink_'s focus. Amos is an impressive musician, capable of fragility and thunder. With soaring yelps, breathy whispers, and slurred phrasing, she delivers an agenda sure to stun and rile. _Icicle_, which rejects Christian dogma and celebrates masturbation, will frost fundamentalists, as will the anti-patriarchal _God_. While her flighty vocals are too reminiscent of Kate Bush and her lyrics often inscrutable, Amos draws us in with raw emotion, convincing intensity and sheer technical skill. Sheesh. Critics make me nervous. The article is a lot longer so I won't type it in, lest I remain here all night. She mentions "Under the Pink" as a title is about getting flayed, about looking beneath the skin. She loved working with those cuddly rats in the video for "God". Which reminds me: Would a certain EuroEctophile who wanted a xerox of the Philadelphia Inquirer's Kate Bush article please resend his mailing address? The switch of accounts here has caused some adminstrative snafus... Paula, thanks for the info on Mr. Keene. Ecto is a veritable font of knowledge! Later, folks! Greetings, Thanks for the comments about the classified ad proposal. As of this Tuesday morning, I've seen six statements of support (including some sensible suggestions) and no complaints. So I will give this project a shot and see how it goes. Somewhere around this post, you will find the first edition of the Ecto classified ad FAQ and first edition of the ads themselves, using my own ads. Any and all suggestions, comments, and even complaints about the FAQ and the ads themselves are welcomed. The goal is to make this as easy as possible for everyone to use! I do have a couple of questions for y'all. First, For a start, I will use my own machine as an FTP site to hold the ads. However, I think it would be best to keep all of the FTP-able Ecto stuff in one spot, i.e., on hardees. Any comments on this? JESSICA, what would be the best way to handle this with minimal effort on your end, since I expect the ads to change frequently? Second, is there any interest in my putting together a list of people who would like to be mailed the full version of the classified ads regularly (say, once a week)? Thanks! Still buzzing to Shonen Knife, I remain ... Doug Burks _O_ @>->--- dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 8 Feb 1994 08:16:00 +0700 From: dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: Classified ad FAQ Greetings, Here is the full information for the Ecto classified ads. First, the raw list of questions in the order they are answered: * What are the Ecto classified ads? * How do I get a copy of the current classified ads? * Who can submit an ad? * How do I submit a classified ad? * How do I respond to a classified ad? * How long will the ads run? * Closing remarks Now onto the answers ... * What are the Ecto classified ads? The Ecto classified ads are the electronic Ecto equivalent of the classified ads (Do other countries use a different term here?) which run in newspapers and magazines. In brief, people can submit ads for products, services, announcements, etc., which are grouped into categories for easy access. * How do I get a copy of the current classified ads? The latest and greatest up-to-date edition will be available via anonymous FTP at olympic.atmos.colostate.edu [129.82.107.46] in the directory `pub/ecto', as a file called `classified'. The latest version of this FAQ will also reside there as `class-faq'. These two documents are also available from me via a simple e-mail request. In addition, a list of the changes to the classified ads will be posted to Ecto once a week. * Who can submit an ad? Any Ectophile can submit a classified ad. Admittedly, I am relying on an honor code here, but please respect my desires. * How do I submit a classified ad? Simply e-mail the ad to me. Try to keep your ads pithy and concise. If your ad unavoidably includes a _long_ list, I will separate out the list, add a pointer in the ad itself, and make the list available via FTP and e-mail, just like the ads. I will not add anything that I see in Ecto itself. Ads must be sent directly to me and clearly labelled as such. Besides the actual information of the ad itself, the ad should include the e-mail address of a person to contact for information. You could also include a mailing address and phone number as contact information, but I don't encourage it. I reserve the right to edit your ads for conciseness and format, though will not change the content. * How do I respond to a classified ad? Respond directly to the contact person listed in the ad. Any details of trades or sales must be negotiated between you and the contact person. If you have any serious problem with someone (heaven forbid), let me know privately. If several complaints pile up against someone, I will issue a consumer warning. However, you assume any and all risks of any deals falling through. * What classified ad categories exist? MUSIC WANTED: Requests for copies of specific albums and/or artists, for trade or purchase, in any format. (Does anyone (besides me :) ) own a turntable?!) MUSIC AVAILABLE: Lists of albums or artists whose music you are willing to trade or sell. This can be extra albums you have hanging around, or albums you have easy access to and are willing to get, or albums you are willing to copy on tape, personal samplers you would like to distribute (though consider adding them to the tape dubbing project!), etc. I would especially like to add a list of people who can easily buy Happy's albums locally and are willing to sell or trade them. ECTO GATHERINGS: Announcements of Ecto parties, informal get-togethers, anywhere two or more Ectophiles plan to meet! CONCERT GATHERINGS: Lists of concerts that Ectophiles plan to attend and would like to have other Ectophiles join them. PERSONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements of engagements, births, changes of addresses, vacation itineries (if you want to meet other Ectophiles), academic degrees, any other news of personal interest you want to share with Ectophiles. This list is not etched in stone. I am even open to changing the names of these existing categories. * How long will the ads run? In general, the ads will run forever. On my own, I will only remove those which have an obvious expiration date, such as the Ecto and concert gatherings. It is your responsibility to keep your ad up-to- date and to ask me to remove it when it is no longer valid. For your assistance, each ad will include the date it was last modified. * Closing remarks If you have any further questions, suggestions, comments, or complaints, just let me know!
