I'm really sorry for this irregularity :(. My life is such a soap opera, i'm actually *embarrassed* about it at this point. Here's what's up now: sunday night about 3am, joe, my husband suffered something along the lines of a heart attack. i rushed him to the hospital. it was pretty scary. it happened again tuesday night at the hospital. he's still there. It was *not* a heart attack. they've no clear idea just what exactly is going on, and they're not being real communicative about anything. it's been a very hard week. hardly any sleep, hardly any food, and a whole lot of stress. As for this recently observed phenomenon of people vehemently unsubscribing....well, time for a theory or three: 1) All the really cool, confident-in-their-emotions, unAFRAID, people are already subscribed to EcTo. 2) There's some misunderstanding as to what "ecto....the Happy Rhodes mailing list" is, exactly. Perhaps there's a country singer out there with a similar name....Perhaps some mindless bastards think that this is some cute name for a group of internetted department of transportation workers who are REALLY into potholes. 3) Faced with the relative infrequency of opportunities to form mutually destructive relationships about which they can later express already-pent-up bitterness, any twit who can operate a modem spends his/her time "making bad choices" about which group to subscribe to (i.e., people with whom he/she should have a realationship) and later showering the gentle folk who were innocently enjoying themselves with an anal expulsive, passive aggressive torrent of venom (forgive the mixed metaphor, please). Dear Ectohpiles, in my quest for a fuller mailbox I joined this mailing list a couple of days ago. I'm 31 years old (3 July 62), Swedish, studied computer science and work as a programmer. Main interests (in no particular order) are: food (cooking and eating), wine (collecting and drinking), (listening to) music, comics, books, boardgames and role-playing games. Later that spring I traveled to Los Angeles to visit a friend of mine. The first day we dropped by a MegaStore somewhere and there I found Warpaint! (under R). I asked if I could listen to which for some reason wasn't possible. After a few well put words about service mindedness I bought it blind and wasn't disappointed. I checked some other record stores in LA while I was there but found no more Happy :(just some Tori singles:). A few weeks after coming home to Sweden I read about Equipoise and cursed my bad luck for not still being in the US. I didn't look very hard after this. I worked a lot and moved 2.5 times (I now live in Stockholm). A couple of weeks ago I found a promising-looking record store (they had a This Woman's Work box in the window) and walked in. I found Warpaint, RhodeSongs and Equipoise listed in some catalogue and ordered the latter two. When I walked in less than a week later to by Under the Pink, I found that my two Happy CDs had arrived and they would only cost about 1.5$ more than normal. When I came home I ripped of the cellophane of my three new CDs, plugged them into my player, hesitated for a few moments and started playing RhodeSongs. I skipped Feed the Fire and then I had the equivalence of a Kategasm (a moment of Happyness? (couldn't resist, don't hit me)) to "The Wretches Gone Awry" which I've played a couple of times daily since then. Vickie supplied me with the numbers for the other 4 CDs (thanks again Vickie!) and I hope to have them some time next week. Meanwhile I think I convinced a workmate of mine that he shall order RhodeSongs at least. I told him to go to the same store (he's gonna by that TWW box as well). If I can get enough people to order her music in the same store they might start carrying it (vain hopes I suppose, but who knows?). Ok, did I win the longest first post award now? I strongly dislike these awards shows as well. I wasn't completely sure which award you were talking about, though. There are different awards for best "rock" performance, and best "alternative" performance. The "rock" nominees would be those artists doing harder edged rock music, and there really aren't that many female artists on your list who would fit that category. Melissa Etheridge would, and also Pat Benatar (who did have an album in '93 by the way). But surely Kate, Happy, Jane and most of the others would never be considered for that award. These ladies would fit under the "alternative" category (in THEIR eyes--I don't feel the need to put artists in categories). I don't know why none of them made that particular list, however. "The Red Shoes", "Equipoise", and "When I Was A Boy" were my three favorite albums from last year, so obviously I would love it if they would get recognized for their brilliant work. The fact that they never seem to get recognized is the reason I never watch or care about the Grammy's. It seems in most cases that they only pick what was very popular during the year for the nominations. And as all of us Ectophiles know, a music's popularity is rarely a measure of it's quality.. Date: Mon, 7 Feb 1994 13:00:04 -0800 (PST) Re: the Grammys and other similar awards... I suspect the reason that they couldn't find enough female vocalists to be nominated for their awards is largely because many female vocalists - such as the ones named - a) don't sell enough records and b) don't have big record companies bribing the awards people. Of course, here in Canada, we have a different phenomenon with the Juno awards... we have Anne Murray winning stupid prizes each year even though she doesn't deign to attend the ceremonies. :) Actually, speaking of record companies, has Happy ever been seriously approached by a record label? Someone was musing a while back why she's on an independent label and not signed, why she always produces her own work, etc. I'd be curious to know if any big name record folks have ever talked to her, and what she said. Nick Heyward is the former lead singer of Haircut 100, the rather embarrassing early 80s group famous for "Love Plus One." He has since gone on to a solo career. I have no idea how many albums he has out, since his most recent, _From Monday to Sunday_, is the only one that has received any attention in the US. _FMtS_ is innocuous pop with slightly inane lyrics. The only two songs I ever want to listen to are the very wonderful "Kite" and "He Doesn't Love You Like I Do," a song which sounds a little too much like Elvis Costello. "Kite" has been getting a lot of airplay on alternative stations and MTV's Alternative Nation. Here in Atlanta, it is regularly played on our commercial alternative station. However, Nick Heyward is coming here on March 1 and tickets have been on sale for a couple of weeks, but the concert has yet to sell out. There are lots of offensive, stupid, wrong- headed ideas out there, and deleting them won't stop their spreading, and it certainly won't educate people who are ignorant. It seems unlikely that any sort of intelligent reply will convince the Nazi of the existance of the Holocaust (or whatever points it is that he is spouting off about (it's got to be a he, right?)). But it might prove educational to other people reading the list, particularly if you are worried about this guy affecting the tender young minds who might not know better. It seems more important to inform them that there are people who still agree with the Nazi's solutions, or claim that the Holocaust is all a Jewish conspiracy, and that these people are wrong. A mailing list or a newsgroup?) and it certainly sounds like it is, you could mail the system administrator of the site that the offending individual is using. Often mail to root@machine.name or postmaster@machine.name will work. Tell them that the user's posts are not acceptable, and ask them to take whatever action they feel is appropriate. If it's a Usenet group the administrator can cancel the original post. If it's a mailing list you could have the mailing list administrator remove that user from the list. This sort of thing certainly brings up censorship and education issues. As Neal points out, the original poster is unlikely to listen to intelligent, reasoned debate on the subject, but others will. However it may or may not be fit the nature of the list to discuss such issues. Whether the abuse of network privileges by posting irrelevant postings to different lists or groups can be protected under the guise of free speech is an interesting question. (does it defend my off-topic ectoposts? :) However promotion of hatred is not protected by free speech legislation in many jurisdictions. But where does something amorphous like Usenet fit in?
