I haven't seen it. Is it worth seeing if you know the secret? Siskel & Ebert (big cheese movie critics for you Euro/Oz folks) are on the Tonight show, and they mentioned that Neil Jordan (director of The Crying Game) also did Mona Lisa. I loved that movie! They also said that he directed High Spirits, a silly little movie starring Peter O'Toole and none other than Mary Coughlin, one of my musical apostles! I'm so mad the secret to TCG was given away with no warning. I've been trying so hard to keep away from reviews and even mentions. Listening to Y KANT TORI READ and LITTLE EARTHQUAKES in succession is a massive mindf*ck. 2.) woj and I will be attending Boskone, the New England Science Fiction Convention, in Framingham, MA this weekend- anyone else from the list also going? Look for Tori or Happy T-shirts. :) 3.) Neil Gaiman will be signing this Sunday, 2/21 from 1-4 PM at The Million Year Picnic, a comics shop in Cambridge, MA. I also plan to attend some part of this, if anyone else is interested make yourselves conspicuous (I won't have a chance to check e-mail before I leave). 4.) If you subscribe to CREEM magazine now, you get a sampler including a Bel Canto song (not sure which one). Not worth the price of admission even for me, but this month's issue does have an amusing feature on the Blue Man Group. 5.) EQUIPOISE is still a way-cool album. 6.) The bass-slide sounds Mike just noticed on "Ecto" are indeed there, and not necessarily on "Poetic Justice". In fact, that was one of the first things I really noticed about "Ecto"- our ears have differently tuned parasites, I guess. :) 7.) I have GOT to go to sleep... perchance to dream? Is it worth seeing if you know the secret? Yes, yes, yes, and did I mention yes?!!! I saw it again, and it was even more fun watching character development from Steven Rea and Jaye Davidson once I knew. I have a friend who's seen it three times, and she's loved it every time. There is much more to this film than one little secret! >They (Siskel & Ebert) also said that he (Neil Jordan) directed High Spirits, a >silly little movie starring Peter O'Toole and none other than Mary Coughlin, >one of my musical apostles! The thing is, Vickie, "High Spirits" was worked over by the studio. Hollywood didn't trust Mr. Jordan's vision as much as they did their own. I read this stuff in an interview recently (he's been featured in at least 4 magazines). He also directed (I think) "We're No Angels" with Sean Penn and Robert DeNiro. Kind of a stinker as well, that one. That is the reason he went back to working with independent film companies. So, if you liked "Mona Lisa", chances are you'll like "The Crying Game". They were both directed by the same person (if you catch my drift). In my opinion, there are a myriad of reasons to see the film, even if you've read the script. The performances are wonderful (not only the nominated Rea and Davidson, but Miranda Richardson also), the direction is wonderful, and the soundtrack is pretty cool too. ======================================================================== Date: 19 Feb 93 11:34:43 EST From: Mike Mendelson Subject: correcshun! >>Anyways, listening to Ecto (the song) I noticed that the bass player >>while playing that great riff (|: DedeDoonDip DededeDoom Dedoom :|) >>must be sliding his fingers up the guitar neck, because you can >>here his fingers slide (her fingers?). For those who care, the correction is: |: DedeDoonDip Dedede______-------Doom Dedoom :| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ S L I D E While were at it, allow me to make a similar observation re: 2BEmortal. The phase of the base chord/note is not the same as the beat of the music (it is in fact slower) giving the neat effect of a slight pulsing emphasis out of rhythm with the piece. This gives the song an almost eery offbeatness... I don't know if it was intentional, but it is very effective... it would be interesting to see how different the song would be without that. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: 19 Feb 93 11:45:52 EST From: Mike Mendelson Subject: manduran Jeff: Wish someone would pick up 'Til Tuesday and get Aimee back into circulation via the recorded medium, instead of the small-time touring she's stuck with right now. Greg footahs about Duran Duran. Funny thing, this morning I pulled Rio out of my shelf of hundreds of cassettes and listened to it on the way to work! (They were actually on Leno recently.) What a great album -- still. Too bad they went downhill from there. Rio is the definitive pop album of major-minor-major chord modulations if there ever was one... nearly every *song* does those 1/2 tone fluctuations. "Feed the Fire" with "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley "Rainkeeper" with "Rhapsody in the Rain" by Lou Christie (I'm undecided whether it would make sense to tie these two couplings together with "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor :-) ) "Waking Up" with "Good Morning, Good Morning" by the Beatles, and/or "Promise of a New Day" by Paula Abdul "Words Weren't Made for Cowards" with "Come Again? Toucan" by Grace Slick (which starts out, "Mistakes are made/Because words are misunderstood") And, of course, effective in the year 2000: "1999" by Prince with "Wrong Century" :-) First Mike and his lower case palindromes, now Kjetil and his dedications to the obscure (to the rest of us). One can never tell when one of my off-the- cuff ideas will catch on, it seems :-). WRT _The Crying Game_: The others commenting on the issue are right. All the attention devoted in the media to the World's Greatest Contrived Secret (a/k/a The Surprise) has indeed obfuscated the fact that there are many other plot subtleties that make the film worth seeing, and may well necessitate seeing it more than once to absorb it all. BTW: I just found out yesterday that Miranda Richardson is currently appearing in the film _Damages_ (or something to that effect), as well as _TCG_ and _Enchanted April_. Off to get some rest, the better to have a fighting chance of staying awake through Suzanne Vega tonight. Hello Ectophiles! Mitch, I can shed a _little_ light on the WXPN fiasco from the 48 Hours "lying" story. I say Little because I forgot the name of the person in question! (It was over a year ago! Those neurons are history!) WXPN used to carry a lot of Public Radio network programs, only playing its music mix in the afternoons. As their music shows were catching on, they decided to expand them into drive time. They hired a DJ from Canada who had claimed acting credits on a series (again, sorry!). Fact is she was a great DJ. Great personality, played great music. Then one of the local magazines, for whatever reasons, checked out her resume and discoverd that she was not an actress at all, that she was an extra on one episode of the series, and that scene was cut! After much public handwringing, WXPN fired her. She got a job at a station near Washington DC under the name Shannon Rock (funny I remember that!). She is now back in Philly as a late night DJ on WMMR, a much bigger station than WXPN! It was a tempest in a teapot. It was silly, it was serious. Hope that clears it up! I'll probably remember her name in the middle of the night! If and when I do I'll include it in a future post. Meanwhile, WXPN has continued to expand its music, and now plays its "mix", which includes lots of Happy, 24 hours a day. The matter of the DJ was a no-win situation for them; they are owned by the University of Pennsylvania and cannot afford a hint of scandal. They are almost always under some criticism as there are no Penn students on the air. The station is run professionally with the students as interns and assistants. It's fairly unusual in college radio. In fact, when I was at Syracuse I had a shift or four on WAER there. In fact, I was the first rock program on the station, in 1968! (I convinced them that there was more to rock than Top 40, and played bands like Spirit, Red Krayola, Procol Harum, etc...) There I go rambling again! Anyway, best wishes to all!
