That's what I thought too, pulling bugs from a spider web. I hadn't thought about yanking away the spider's brunch though. (Visions of Charlotte wafting through my brain. How could Happy *do* that?) :-) > And now a question which I doubt anyone could answer, but perhaps Vickie > will pass it on to Happy 'n Kevin: the ocean between "He Will Come" and "The > Flight" is absolutely gorgeous. I remembere the recent posting about > Dr. Mountain's nature recordings, and wondered if he had supplied this > soundbite... Good thought. I'll try to remember. My Chicago show aired tonight (I actually recorded it last night) and I played Out Like A Lamb, Possessed, Step Inside, Beat It Out, Take Me With You, The Perfect Irony, Poetic Justice, Look For The Child, All Things, He Will Come/The Flight, and Moonbeam Friends. Hey, have I mentioned lately how much I love Equipoise? After listening to it overnovernovernover again, it's now fun to play the CD on random repeat. I even made a tape from random repeat. It isn't that I don't like the way Happy ordered the songs, it's just that it's fun to not know what song is coming up next. Even when I'm not listening to the Cd or the tape, I hear the songs in my brain all the time. Shortly after I got the CD, when I'd listened to it a few times but wasn't intimately familiar with it yet, bits of songs would start playing in my head and a couple of times I'd think "ooooh, this is good, what is this?" and I'd brain hum along for a few moments before realizing "yeah, it's Happy!" Just wonderful bits of treatful tricks here and there. Oooooh I love it, I really, really love it! I first heard of Happy Rhodes in either 1986 or 1987 while I was waiting in line to see Bill Bruford and Patrick Moraz in San Francisco (that's where I'm originally from). Someone was handing out playlists from KFJC and Happy's name was on it. Next to her name it said, "a must for Kate Bush fans" which caught my attention. Of course what they didn't say was that at that time it was impossible to find Happy's stuff anywhere. It wasn't even clear whether Happy Rhodes was the name of a person or the name of a band. So every once in a while I would look in record stores to see if I could find anything, but I of course never did. Then I just sort of forgot about it. Now I'm a grad student in immunology at Yale. A friend of mine told me about these mailing lists, so I signed up for the Kate Bush one. There were so many mentions of Happy Rhodes that I just had to find out once and for all what she was all about, so I went to the ultimate source--the one and only Vickie (Hi, Vickie! :)). Vickie suggested I start reading Ecto and she told me how to get the sampler (Thanks, Jeff!). On the first couple of listens I wasn't really overwhelmed or anything (sorry). But then a funny thing happened. I found myself constantly reaching for that tape, and her songs were playing in my head all the time. Then it was obvious I had to go find all of her albums. I went home for Christmas and found Warpaint, VI, and VII, after visiting 4 different Towers and a store called Rasputin's in Berkeley. When I got back to New Haven, Meredith mentioned Sam Goody so I looked there (Hi, Meredith!). They had all 5 of her albums (minus Rearmament and Ecto by the time I left there). I have since also ordered and received my autographed copy of Equipoise. In any case, I'm slowly taking them in and enjoying every minute of it. She's really gotten under my skin, as only Kate Bush and Jane Siberry have in the past. I didn't expect to get so hooked, but here I am!! So, that's my Happy story. I also wanted to say that I really enjoy reading this list. It's much different (friendlier) than some of the others. Right now "The Flight" is playing in my head--again. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi! Later! --Tamar (boutame@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu) ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 18 Feb 93 09:40:18 CST From: Chip Subject: Are you gonna be in Philly? ... It's so nice to feel like someone COMPETENT is in charge of things for once... and Hillary really looked good and radiated a definite knowingness that undoubtedly contributes to the overwhelming support in the early AM polls for the hard-knocks plan --- I get the feeling Bill will escape, somehow, the hounding Jimmy took) and thru on the flip side of my EQP (I like the way other people are using this abbrev.) tape which includes Mother Sea, I Say, and the 2nd 1/2 of Ecto, starting from Ecto (I think). Anyways, listening to Ecto (the song) I noticed that the bass player while playing that great riff (|: DedeDoonDip DededeDoom Dedoom :|) must be sliding his fingers up the guitar neck, because you can here his fingers slide (her fingers?). The sound comes like this: |: DedeDoonDip ______------- DededeDoom Dedoom :| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ S L I D E The really interesting thing is that I never noticed this sound before, but once you do notice it, you realize that it really contributes to the overall sound for the whole song. It's almost like a separate little instrument, and it works perfectly rhythmically and sonically. (I hope I got my songs and riffs straight here. Bonk me on the head if I didn't.) Anyways, just thought I'd share that with y'all. -amanaplanamjcjmanalpanama- ======================================================================== Subject: Sahara Blue Date: Thu, 18 Feb 93 11:15:15 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Okay, why didn't anybody tell me about this? You can't honestly expect me to believe that nobody knew about it. I just found the CD single for "I'll Strangle You." The cover of the CD (in a large typeface, entirely covering the CD5 case) sez: On this record, The Sahara Blue Orchestra *starring* Gerard Depardieu & Anneli Drecker *plays* _I'll Strangle You_, *directed by* Hector ZAZOU. The b-side sez: The Sahara Blue Orchestra *starring* Barbara Louise Gogan, Yuka Fujii & Mr. X *plays* _SAHARA BLUE_, *directed by* Hector Zazou. This is (p) 1992 La Grande Halle - La Villette / Crammed Discs (c) 1992 Crammed Discs and we're told that "Both tracks are excerpts from the album SAHARA BLUE". Catalog number is 5 CRAM 80S Unfortunately, the Anneli song is the radio edit, at only 4:13, but it's real cool. A lot of folks would describe _Shimmering Warm and Bright_ as a lot dancier than the previous Bel Canto albums. Well, this track makes _SW&B_ look positively mellow. ;-) It's very cool, and very Anneli. And the spoken parts by Gerard Depardieu are very cool (he has such a wonderfully sexy voice). The second track is very mellow, with guitar and such, and pleasing female lead vocals. Anybody know who Barbara Louise Gogan is? Don't think I've ever heard of her. And finally, does anybody have the full _Sahara Blue_ album? My interest is unquestionably piqued now! I highly recommend the single, if not the album, to fans of Anneli Drecker. Jeff |Jeffrey C. So I asked him in my letter if he was still doing all the packing himself. Here's an excerpt from his reply: "Yes, presently I'm handling the shipping from here. Once in a while, if I'm lucky, I can get a friend in here to pitch in. Our initial Equipoise order was for 10,000; so far the floor is holding. [I'm not a businessman, but I guess Kevin is saying that he thinks that the initial order will sell out.] 3,600 lbs of CD's is getting to be too much. I think my next shipments will be going to a fulfillment house. We're growing at a ridiculous rate (no complaints)." Anyway, I wanted to let you know that things are going well at AG. But you knew that anyway. And I think very highly of Kevin for taking the time to write me this note.
