A friend in Ottawa should have just received a copy of _Warpaint_ as a birthday present. :) There are a couple of ecto-people in Ottawa and in Vancouver, too, I think. "Land of the Glass Pinecones" is indeed a Human Sexual Response song, but the collection it's on is called _In a Roman Mood_. The Jackie Onassis song is on what was called _Fig. 14_, but I just got a Ryko/Hannibal ad which says they've just reissued it, and it's now called _Fig. 15_ because they've added another (apparently wild) song. I've wanted a copy of _FIg. 14_ for a while now, because our tape died a while back. It's got some classics on it--the Jackie Onassis song, an Anne Frank song, very quirky with lots of black humour. Bought the new Mouth Music cd and like it quite a lot. It's not as good as the first one because it's a little more pop. It's fun, but occasionally loses the Celtic feel that gave the first one such a sense of being such a new combination of sounds. This one sounds just a little more like any pop world music. Also found a new Sterelab single (4 songs) called _Low Fi_. Damn, I love 'em and would recommend this and/or _Peng!_ to anyone (Steve Fagg didn't like it much, though). Not quite so wild about _Switched On_ simply because it's a collection of singles and doesn't flow very well as a whole. The songs are great, though, and the lyrics are a hoot, particularly an oh so very calm & sweet voice sings "bourgeois Christian civilisation".... --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1993 10:43:53 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Oops, P.S. It sure sounds like a weird thing to do. One strange phenomenon I noticed lately is that the word penchant suddenly has a penchant for appearing in unexpected places since Happy used it in _Closer_. The Boston volume of D.I.Y isn't actually out yet, as far as I know. But I have heard that it will include the Jackie Onassis song. 'Land of the Glass Pinecones' was a song I heard growing up in the Boston suburbs, on WFNX, around the same time that I heard many of the songs that are on various D.I.Y. volumes. And thanks to Neile for pointing me in the direction of In A Roman Mood. I imagine that record is out of print, but I'll keep an eye out in used disc places for a while, and maybe I'll get lucky. Ron the neatest coinicidence happened last night-- well, maybe coinicidence isn't the right term-- but only a few hours after mentioning "Chinese Rocks", I went to the King Missile show at the Whiskey, and they played it. ======================================================================== From: Richard.Dean@central.sun.com (Richard Dean) Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1993 13:14:31 -0700 Subject: Re: Happy is quick! But you all knew that, _ne ce pas_? :-) Speaking of ambiguities: last Sunday's _Sun-Times_ ran a story about Gang of Seven, the new spoken word label started by Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman. It quotes Ackerman WRT his venerable new age specialty label: "Windham Hill was a response to the synthetic sound of disco." It was always MHO WIVH, like it or lump it, that new age was a pretty synthetic sound in its own right. Is someone, somewhere, confusing it with punk rock and its tributary genre, new wave--which really did arrive on earth in the service of the notion that disco sucked? New age and new wave seem to me kind of hard to mistake for one anoth- er. As Johnny Slash on _Square Pegs_ used to say, "totally different head, man --totally." Speaking of new wave: Sunday morning, NPR had a feature on Elvis Costello's new album, _The Juliet Letters_, which I didn't really absorb due to incomplete awakening at the time. EC was interviewed some time before on _Fresh Air_, and it came through to me at that time that this concept album is an interesting synthesis of rock and classical. Late that night, _World News Now_ ran a story from Verona, in which it came out that people still write letters to Romeo and Juliet, especially the latter. Graham wrote: > I don't know about that but I'm sure that Martain, Chris and myself would >have LOVED the cold weather about two weeks back! What would be the best name for an alternative, superior, faster delivery ser- vice for getting Happy's new CD into the hands of the likes of Klaus and Claudia? I'm still undecided between Deutsche Equipost and Deutsche Bundespois e :-). WRT Anne Rice's vampire books: Andrei Codrescu, the Romanian-born poet who does commentaries for NPR, is one of Will Ackerman's stable of artists on Gang of 7. If they can get the book-on-tape rights for Rice's works, methinks it would be way cool to have Codrescu do the talking :-). Turns out that Larry Coryell, of The-Other-Equipoise fame, performed in Chicago over the weekend. The _Tribune_ gave him a good review. On the latest replaying of "Out like a Lamb," the bagpipe riffs inexplicably reminded me, which they never did before, of the long version of Eric Burdon and the Animals' "Sky Pilot," vintage 1968, in which the electric guitar riffs which end the short (typical AM radio) version give way to further extensions of the bridge--first battle SFX, and then bagpipes--before the whole thing culminates in a second, more balladic than the first, vocal section. Weird what Happy's music can evoke in the susceptible listener, _nicht wahr_? :-) Mitch --------------------------------- "If it seems like we are bumbling around like the Keystone Tops, we were." --Nurse Jones ======================================================================== From: jmg@rocket.com (Jim Gurley) Subject: Re: Human Sexual Response Date: Wed, 17 Feb 93 12:06:08 PST >land of the glass pinecones...human sexual response...
