OK, stop lurking, who bought the 5 CDs that were there on Wednesday? I can't imagine non-net people walking in and buying Happy, since she is hidden behind Lydia Rhodes at the back end of the slot, and to the best of my knowledge she isn't getting any airplay in Boston. Also, Boston Tower had *tons* of Happy CDs yesterday (no Equipoises tho :( ). Laurie was one of the original 3 founders of Two Nice Girls, and most definitely appears on their first album and an EP or two. She left the group for a solo contract shortly after. Before that first "commercial" release, the Two Nice Girls (infamous because there weren't 2 girls but 3 girls in the band, and because the girls weren't necessarily everyone's idea of "nice"), they were extremely popular for years here in Austin. Besides their lyrics, harmonies, and attitudes, audiences liked them because they tended to pass out lyric sheets at their shows so that everyone could sing along. Laurie's still a solo act, and Two Nice Girls now consists of (I think) 5 girls. All probably as Nice as ever. -- Steve ======================================================================== From: special K Subject: Re: Kellog Breakfast Date: Tue, 16 Feb 93 10:12:58 EST > Special K: > > I think that _Moodfood_ by Moodswings is just great! I spent the happy day tromping on snowshoes through the indescribably wonderful alpine scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park under perfect weather and spent the happy evening talking on the phone with friends and family. I even received my _Equipoise_ just two days before my birthday! Chris B: Yes, I have had to read a few of my birthday cards quite carefully. Some people even send me Valentine's Day cards as a birthday card, and believe it or not, there are cards that combine the two themes. However, nothing romantic has ever come out of it all. :( As Mitch noted, the infamous Chicago St Valentine's Day massacre happened on my birthday in 1929, but that's the _most_ interesting thing that's happened on February 14th. A very boring day in history (at least until 1956. :) ). Anyway, on to the meat of this letter. With _Equipoise_ out and the extra CD tracks, I thought it would be a good time to update and broaden the input for the (Un)Official Happy sampler (Still a best seller in the tape dubbing project! :) ). So -- If you were to create a Happy sampler for someone today, what would you put on it? Send me the results (via e-mail. No reason to clutter up Ecto), and after I get enough entries, I'll tally the results, create a tape, and stick it in the tape dubbing project. It looks as though I may be faced with a long stopover in Chicago on my way home from a business trip on Saturday 27th February. Depending on how things go it may be anything from 3.5 hours (in which case it's probably not worth leaving the airport) up to 27 hours (i.e. I may have to spend Friday night in Chicago). What I'd like to know is: what are the things a limey tourist ought to see & do on a flying visit to the city? What 'sights' shouldn't one miss, and where are they relative to the airport? Where are the good places to eat? Best record shops? Bars? Any major art galleries? Please excuse my ignorance of your, doubtless wonderful, city but I'm afraid I am totally clue-less about Chicago, and if I can't make use of this stop-over there is a great likelyhood I shall spend an entire week in the States (my first visit there) seeing nothing other than airport lounges, hotel rooms, and Northern Telecom offices! I expect to be leaving Chicago on a flight scheduled at either 18:05 or 20:35 on Saturday evening. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. Date: Tue, 16 Feb 93 00:29:29 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu My music collection is stored in a rather weird way, which has developed over lo these many years (I bought my first CD on 10/15/83 (Billy Joel's _Glass Houses_ (hey, I was only 14!). As a result, I know *exactly* where any CD is, and nobody else has the slightest idea where to find a particular person. Basically, I've got the collection broken up into categories and sub- categories and stored in boxes (mostly shoe boxes, though I'm also using the boxes my two external floppy drives came in (they're the perfect width). Within it's lowest category, artists are separated based on how much I like them/how much I listen to them. Within a particular artist (or career) albums are in chronological order of release. Thus I have a "women's section" broken into categories like "ethereal" "folk" "celtic" and so on. I also have a box for "Genesis" which contains every Genesis album, almost every Gabriel, several Mike Rutherford, all the Phil Collins, some Tony Banks, and so forth. I think there are close to 40 CDs in the box, and they're all arranged chronologically (as opposed to being broken into distinct artist subgroups). Within the "Women's" section, I have two different boxes. One is for "primary" artists and leads off with Kate Bush (strangely, this consists of 6 CDs, none of which are any of her 7 studio/best of albums; the Box Set is kept seperately on my desk). Right behind KaTe is Tori, Loreena, Sarah, Jane, Laurie Anderson, Arson Garden, Concrete Blonde, and then the 'primary folk' subsection (Shawn Colvin, Tracey Chapman, Suzanne Vega). The next box over has an ethereal section (Hex, Area, Pamela Golden), a pop section ('Til Tuesday, Madonna (I'm gay. I *have* to like Madonna...:-)), a Celtic section (Enya, Clannad, Sinead, Kathryn Tickell), and then just the various stuff that's hard to classify (Bonnie Raitt, MMO'H, and god knows what else). My bed consists of a matress lying on a rather groovy platform that fills a U-shaped section of my room. It's about 3.5' off the ground, carpeted, and is big enough for my matress, all of my CD boxes, a humidifier (in the winter; replaced with a fan in the summer), my alarm clock, my portable CD player, and my Sony SRS-50 portable, amped, bass-reflex speakers. So where am I leading with all this? You *knew* there was a point. I tried to put away all 6 of my Happy CDs tonight, as well as the SV disc, 3 Laurie Anderson discs, 1 Jane Siberry, 1 Pixies, and 1 Loreenna McKennitt, all of which were scattered around my room/house in one place or another. "Uh oh, the Happy isn't fitting. She needs to be right behind KaTe. Well, they fit, but it's tight. Oh good, this SV disc's case is already in the box; I just need to put the CD in the jewel case. No problem. Now for the Laurie Anderson. There's no room. Well, I can move the Arson Garden over to that box, but there are only two of those and 3 Laurie CDs to put away. Well, I guess I can put Concrete Blonde in that box too; it should probably be near AG anyway. Okay, now I can put away the Laurie. Oh, but there's that Loreena. That barely fits and now I can't move any of the CDs excpet to pull them straight out of the box. OH SHIT! What's that KaTe CD doing over there? There's no way in hell it'll fit in the right box! And I can't move any more women out of the primary box 'cause there's no more room in the secondary box!" The obvious solution? I need a third box. And I've got a couple of shoe boxes sitting around my room. BUT THERE'S NO MORE ROOM ON THE PLATFORM!!!!! I need somewhere else to store CDs, but it won't be at all convenient. And y'know what the worst part of all this is? There are *so* many other CDs I want! ;-) Jeff (who, for whatever reason, felt like sharing all this) |Jeffrey C. Each review/description provides insight and another perspective that one might have missed. Keep those posts coming! [I promise a full length review next week after my Baltimore trip. Anyone have some free time Friday morning there (my plane leaves at 12:25pm)?] Here's a glimpse from what I have written so far: ------------ [.....] Where does Equipoise stand in terms of today's tag-bearing music industry? That's a rather hard question. Alternative adult music is probably the best way to describe her work. It's not alternative rock, as the music of bands like Nirvana, and even songstresses like Sarah McLachlan is usually classified, and it's not classic or progressive rock in the sense that it doesn't suffer from the limitations of the genre. Happy Rhodes has the power to transcend classification, and that can be both a strength and a weakness. She has defied classification since her very start. Her early songs had a folksy feel to them but the powerful disturbing lyrics and illustrations of monsters on her album covers probably alienated any folk following she might have gathered. She was also as far away as possible from being a synth-pop act, like the eurythmics, since her lyrics couldn't evoke any of the upbeat pleasurable pop sentiment that is expected from pop music, and it is doubtful if it could stir any movement in the dance floors of clubs where pop hits are made. Her previous album _Warpaint_ featured a very distinct percussive background, and fixed tempos that helped it actually make it in the top 10 dance albums of 1992, according to PULSE! magazine. Equipoise is beyond that state. The rhythms are again prevalent, and as mentioned before, percussion is used generously throughout the album. It is used in sunergy with the textures and the lyrics this time. And these are quite varied.
