Hello Ectopholks! A few quick notes - Mitch, she didn't see me from the audience. We were back too far. Honest, it was a total shock to her. Her manager said they spoke about it at length. I'm sort of alien myself - my high school nickname was "Wrong World" (now an honor!). See the songs One Alien and Friend in Phobos - that's me!:) As Susanne said that Sunday, when she was picking up the interview tape at my house, Happy puts out a lot of spiritual energy which draws us all together. And I know when I looked into her grey-blue eyes we had prior spirtual contact. But enough! Anybody notice the improvement in sound quality on Equipoise? The cymbals in particular are crisper and less sampled-sounding! BTW, there is fantastic cymbal work on Runners. O, these modern synths! Regarding videos: I spoke with Susanne today, and she clarified the video outlook a bit: Come late April, they will decide IF they will make a video at this time. Odds are if they do, it will be a performance clip rather than a concept. Right now things are moving too fast. Equipoise is out of the gate like a horse set to win, and H&K's main efforts at this time are in album support. While I can hold down postproduction costs, distribution looks prohibitive right now. Still, they _want_ to do a video; it's mostly a matter of time and budget! I continue to be amazed at Ecto! People from all over the US as well as Australia! I am new to internet, and ecto is my only contact with it, yet I remain amazed! Unfortunately, my Genie gateway does not allow me to download files or quote other people's messages with those neat > > > along the sides (sigh!). And the eclectic nature of the group is amazing. Well, here are some of my stats - let's see how I fit in! I was born 2 Feb 1947 (making me 46). Before my television career I was a professional musician (bass guitar) in a cover-rock band 1972-74, original progressive 1974-75, bluegrass 1975-76, and folk 1976-80. My all time favorite bands were Spirit and Gentle Giant, though I like a lot of other musicians. My all time favorite is - well, hello Ectophiles, glad to be home at last! (Oddly enough, last month I picked up a guitar and put on Warpaint (the whole album) - and breezed right through along with H&K! It's that past life connection again!!!) I got into my current job as a telecine operator when the family needed more security. As I was a combat photographer with the Army in Viet Nam, and a TV major at Syracuse, transferring film to tape seemed logical enough! I've done a lot of videos, perhaps the most famous was Rockin' the Casbah by the Clash. Also did Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love, a few Blue Oyster Cult, and a LOT I bet nobody here has ever seen! Mostly I do commercials for the Philly area, but Kevin told me he's seen my Cardizem SR commercial a lot in Albany! Thanks for letting me introduce myself! Oh yeah, I'm a size 10 in the shoe department! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all over the coming years, and as was mentioned, this IS only the beginning for Happy! I thought I'd try a Klaus but it turned into 300+ lines, which I didn't expect. Anyway, sorry about that. I'm still trying to keep posts that I want to respond to. I am reading everything, and enjoying every minute of it. Hellos to ALL the new Ectophiles! I'm glad you're here. Thanks for the thanks, Klaus & Claudia, Chip, John Relph and Jim. You're all more than welcome, because it's my pleasure! I didn't get to my e-mail (but I will!) because I did my Chicago show tonight. I actually recorded it and the Kansas City show last night (Tuesday night) and I focused on Happy. I played I Say, Oh the Drears, To the Funnyfarm, Because I Learn, Off From Out From Under Me, Words Weren't Made For Cowards, Closer, Cohabitants, Save Our Souls, The Wretches Gone Awry, and, in Chicago only, Runners. All in that order. The *hardest* thing is trying to pick songs from each of the albums. I wanna do a 6-hour Happy marathon!! Waaa! (I'll join in Uli!) So, the Chicago show aired tonight, and the Kansas City show is in the mail and will air this coming Monday. I'm sure I'll do another Happy show next week too. Maybe the week after too. (That's the nice thing about having complete control over what I play. I can do anything I want.) I just finished my Happy Story. I was kind of appalled that I hadn't finished it before now. Part 1 was done and has been posted before. I hadn't even gotten to the really good parts though! Well, it's coming soon to a mailbox near you. Shortly ago there was a thread about Julia Fordham (who I love!) and I'm struck by how much Happy sounds like Julia in the song "Save Our Souls." It's highly uncanny! They definitely need to work together sometime. Tomorrow night we're going to see Big Hat and Moon Seven Times (formerly Area) which is the best double bill I've seen in a long time. I'm so sorry (pout pout) that I missed Susanne Vega (that was the night I got Equipoise) so this will make up for it, a bit. (Only a bit, because I've seen BH & MST, and I've never seen Susanne...boo hoo.) Thanks Martin and Jim, for the Toby Mountain information! Thanks Meredith, for the Ingrid Karklins concert review! It started me thinking that I really should get my butt in gear and finish my story. Sometimes things take a few reminders to actually *do* something though, so that's why this is over a month late. Forth, welcome to Ecto! Fifth, let us know if KKSF is adding anything from Equipoise, please? Here's the story, including more about the program director of KKSF. Part I is a re-post. Part II I just finished. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vickie here. Ready for some long ramblings? David K. mentioned that KKSF in San Francisco is playing Happy. I knew that, but it's nice to hear confirmed from someone else. KKSF is, in a way, very special to me for reasons that have nothing to do with her getting airplay there. The program director there is named Dore Stein. {Fade to late summer 1988} Dore Stein is a friend of H&K's from way back. He moved to SFO from Albany a few years ago and brought with him a cassette of Ecto. He picked 4 songs from Ecto and made an "Ecto Sampler" which he then made many dubs of and sent around to lots of radio stations and friends. One of the people who got a copy was named Bob Davis, who, at that time, was a DJ for KFJC, a very well-respected alternative college station in the San Francisco area. Bob was a Kate Bush fan who was involved in Break-Through (a now-defunct Canadian fanzine) and had met many other fans through his involvement. One of those people was named John Reimers, who lived in St. Louis at the time (he now lives in Los Angeles) and who knew....me. Bob and John were Annette Peacock fans and Bob sent John a tape with 2 obscure, hard-to-find AP albums on it. There was time at the end of each side of the tape, so Bob put 2 songs from the Ecto sampler on 1 side, and 2 on the other side, after the AP albums. John used to drive from St. Louis to Kansas City (a 5 hour drive) to visit us quite often and on one of his visits brought the Annette Peacock tape with him, knowing that I too was an Annette Peacock fan. I put it in the dubbing deck and just set it to record, not listening to it at the time, because there were so many other things to do. I wrote down the titles exactly as Bob had written them on John's tape. John went home, and a few days later I took the tape into work with me. I worked in a record store warehouse and Walkmans were allowed. The first time I listened to the tape I didn't even pay any attention to the songs at the end. I'd sometimes have to listen with one ear off and the volume down. That must have been what happened, because I remember the AP albums very well, but not the Happy. I wanted to get to know the AP albums, so I listened again. This time, though I still missed really hearing the first song, I *DID* hear the second. "Off From Out From Under Me." As the song started, something about the opening instrumental music made me stop and turn the volume up. I listened closely as she started singing. "I knew a man, he was very odd, he'd always thought that someone was following him. He'd talk of entities that didn't exist. Or so I thought." I rewound over and over and listened again and again. COOL! WHO *IS* THIS???? I looked at what I had written on the cassette. "Happy Rhodes. From the Ecto Sampler." Huh? Never heard of her. Hmmm. I asked various people I worked with if they'd ever heard of her. Nope. I started calling record stores in town to ask if they had anything by Happy Rhodes. Nope. Ever hear of something called the "Ecto Sampler?" Nope. Look it up, please. Nope, no listings. Hmmm. After a few days of intense hunting and no luck, I called John in St. Louis to ask him, "please sir, more?" He'd said he'd see what he could do. Poor Annette was totally forgotten. I desperately wanted to play the song on my show, but, as luck would have it, the song cut off before the ending. A few notes would have been OK, I could've faded it down. But it cut off way before the end of the song, and I wanted people to hear the entire thing. It was such an unusual and hypnotic song, very special. It would have been cheating the listeners to only play half of it. I felt I had to wait. Fast forward through many weeks of waiting, during which I bugged nearly everyone I knew, asking for information, had they ever heard of her. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. John came back to visit and brought with him a tape that Bob had made in response to John's queries. The tape contained all of Ecto. John and I settled down on the couch to have a listen. I remember liking "I'm Going Back" and "If Love Is A Game, I Win" but when "Would That I Could" came on.......whaaaaaaaattt? We had to rewind and listen again a few times just to make sure it wasn't just the, um...(part about illicit substances deleted) making us hear things. That *VOICE*! My my my, we were *more* than a little suprised. We listened through the rest of the album and when "Don't Want To Hear It" came on, we were on the floor! Our mouths were hanging open, our eyes were wide and we were laughing hysterically. Not at Happy, but just at the fact that we'd never even conceived of the possibility of hearing anyone who sounded so much like Kate! **THAT**VOICE**!! Who *IS* this person???? I made John, right then and there, call Bob Davis in San Francisco to get *any* information whatsoever. John and I are quite a team when it comes to tracking people down. II "Vickie's Happy Story, Pt. II, aka You Shouldn't Have Asked :-)" I should remind everyone that, though we live in Chicago now, at the time I found Happy in 1988 we lived in Kansas City, Missouri and I was doing my radio show live in the studio. > Who *IS* this person???? I made John, right then and there, call Bob > Davis in San Francisco to get *any* information whatsoever. John handed the phone over to me and I asked Bob about Happy. Bob had _Ecto_ on cassette, but I think it was a dub. All he knew about Happy was that she was from Albany, NY and that he found out about her via KFJC. He said there was no address on the "label" but that there was another name, Kevin Bartlett. I wrote the information down. I first played Happy on a Sunday night, October 2, 1988, to be exact. The day before, Saturday morning, I sat down and called Albany information. I asked for "Rhodes, Happy" and "Bartlett, Kevin" and wasn't suprised at all when the operator said she didn't have a listing for Happy. At that time I was certain that the name was a pseudonym. She did, however, have a listing for Kevin Bartlett. Yay! I called the number and got an answering machine. Very quickly I said "Hi my name is Vickie Mapes and I'm from Kansas City and I have a radio show and I'm looking for a Kevin Bartlett who has something to do with a singer named Happy Rhodes and if you're that Kevin Bartlett could you please call me collect at blah blah thank you bye!" I hung by the phone all that day and the next, hoping that he would call. I was going to be playing Happy for the first time, and I *desperately* wanted some information to give my listeners. He didn't call though :-(. Our dubbing deck was down so I had borrowed John's tape when he went back to St. Louis and played "Would That I Could" and "Don't Want To Hear It" on my next show. Gaffa flame war talk about "should Happy be compared to Kate?" makes me a bit embarrassed to say this, but it's true so I will. The first time I played Happy on the air was _purely_ to show off how much like Kate she sounded. I didn't announce what I was going to be playing or anything about her voice, I just played it, expecting the phone calls to come rolling in. SIG was/is a very Kate-oriented show. I had a following among Kate fans in Kansas City. I absolutely loved Happy's Kateish voice and I thought my listeners would too. As it happened, I didn't get any phone calls during or immediately after the songs, though I did hear of reactions later. For instance, later that week I went into a record store where a friend of mine worked (this guy turned me onto Mary Coughlin and gave me promo of The Innocence Mission a couple of months before the album was released. Nice guy!) He asked me about Happy. I was pleased that he had listened to my show but it turns out he hadn't. One of my listeners, who I didn't know and had never even heard from, had come into the store looking for Happy and said that SIG was where he had heard the artist. That night though, there was no reaction at all. {Brief anecdotal aside} While I was playing Happy, I did get a phone call from someone in the Army who had just been transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, about 40 miles north of Kansas City. (It's in the city where I was born. Melissa Etheridge too.) A couple if weeks before this he had been flipping through the dials to find out of there were any interesting radio stations in the area. It was during the daytime and a pledge drive was going on. The people on the air were being silly so he stopped to hear what was going on. One of the people, named Ann, was going down a list of shows that aired on KKFI and saying silly, but nice, things about them. She said something about Suspended In Gaffa and this guy *flipped*!! Turns out he and his wife were *HUGE* Kate fans. He called into the station and talked to Ann and pledged $25.00, saying that any station that had a show called Suspended In Gaffa had to be great! So he pledged money after only hearing the station for less than 5 minutes, just on the basis of my show! Good timing! I was driving somewhere and had the station on, but (like most people when there's a pledge drive going on) I had the volume turned down low. I heard Ann saying something..."guy just pledged $25.00..blah...blah... he'll kiss Miz Vickie's feet...blah...blah..." WHAT??? I turned up the volume but she was already talking about something else. When I got home I called and talked to Ann and she told me about him. Great! Too bad he didn't wait and pledge during my show! Ok, so I knew about this guy and was expecting a call from him during my show. I had just put on "Would That I Could" when he did call. We talked for quite a while, and because he was talking to me he completely missed hearing Happy. He and his wife became ardent supporters of the show and friends, driving from Leavenworth to Kansas City to visit us. They also became Happy fans. Before we moved to Chicago he was transferred to Fairbanks, Alaska and I've completely lost touch with them :-(. {End brief anecdotal aside, that really had nothing to do with anything, but I really miss them and wonder where they are now. They were only going to be in Alaska for 2 years. Plus, I can't help but wonder if they've kept up with Happy's music. Yes, everybody called me Miz Vickie. Pfft!} Soooooo, back to the story at hand. The first night I played Happy on SIG I asked if anyone had ever heard of her and if they had, please call the station and enlighten me as to who this incredible woman was. Of course, no one called.
