A bit late! :-( ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 8 Feb 93 2:55:58 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Crazy girl, but happy ***Spoiler*** (A bit for Equipoise, a bit for my cohabitant) I said this: > Tonight's been very strange, I'll tell you about it tomorrow. And I never did, did I? Well, this is the last thing I'll send before going to bed. I went to see a psychiatrist that night. It's the first time I've seen one since, gee, since my overnight pajama party at Western Missouri Mental Health Center in 1981. We had a long session and he wants to see me on a regular basis. He also gave me anti-depressants. A few people have warned me against using them, and I myself didn't really want to, but he explained the reasoning behind them and I decided that I should at leat try them. He did *not* talk me into taking them. I was in bad shape though, *very* bad, and it was worth a try. What I'm taking is very mild and the interesting thing is that it seems to be working the way it's supposed to. The emotional roller coaster I've been on (which is much worse than I've let on) has stopped, yet I don't feel medicated at all. It's pretty wonderful to feel good for a change. I can tell the difference when I miss taking them on time (things like bursting into tears for no good reason) so I know the depression is still there, but it's nice to not have it as a monkey on my back while I'm working out everything else. The next Monday I started therapy too. Tomorrow night is my second session. I'll be seeing both a psychiatrist and a therapist, is that wild or what? I was going to write this to Ecto sooner, but I just didn't want to spoil the pre-Equipoise excitement with my angsterism. I feel good now, so it's ok. This is Happy-related... Equipoise came at the right time for me. I'm happy, and I've got something to focus on that I don't have to feel guilty about. It's an amazing feeling. I'm *happy* for the first time in a long time (and it's not drug-induced...I mean the anti-depressants) and, like Jessica, I sometimes cry when I'm listening to the album from happiness. It feels so much better than crying from sadness and depression. Just tonight, Mitch told me something that totally blew me away. I've only just gotten to the point where I'm learning the lyrics and some songs I really hadn't even read them closely yet. "Cohabitants" is one of those songs. I've gotten to the point of loving the music (and even The Voize) but hadn't yet delved into the lyrics. Mitch mentioned offhand, in a phone conversation, that the song was about depression. I had no idea! While we were on the phone I looked at the lyrics and it all made so much sense. The lyrics are from the point-of-view of the depression, as a demon lurking inside. Wow! yep, that's *exactly* what it feels like! Happy's so amazing, she can put into words everything that most of us would rather not have anybody else know. When Happy wrote her note explaining her vision of Equipoise, it hit me very hard but I didn't write about it because it sounds *so* pretentious for me to equate my own troubles/journey/whatever with anything that Happy does. It's unfair to Happy for me to go on like that, but it happens to be true, an uncanny coincidence. Then comes along "Cohabitants"....yikes! I really need to go to bed now, because I don't think what I'm trying to say is making any sense. It's too important to not make sense. As Martin says...no wonder we love her so. I don't think I am wrong everywhere, but of course there are the parts that I couldn't understand. Anyhow, I am interested in those lyrics. As I have said before I 'only' have the very nicely packaged promo version of the CD. The credits are on the back, given to 'Donovan P. Leitch'. Since I am not a big scholar of Donovanology I didn't know his complete name and didn't have the idea that was THE Donovan, especially because there are other songs on the album that have credits to other people at least besides Sarah. It sounds the same for me like 'Myra Ellen Amos' sounds for someone who hasn't heard too much of Tori. Now for those who are interested in how my promo version is designed: It came in a paper sleeve one inch higher and one centimeter broader than a normal CD package. It's folded so that it's almost as thick as a normal one. It's color is somehow sandy, with some spots on it. There's 'Sarah McLachlan' written diagonally over the front cover that has to be folded into a paper pocket that forms the lower right corner of the sleeve. On that corner there's written 'Solace'. Both writings are in silver. See the pic for some better impression. Side two of the cover has the picture that's also on the CD itself and a track listing (without time, credits or anything else). The sides have 'Sarah McLachlan Solace' on it, the back some copyrights and a 'Promo only. Not for sale.' line on it. +-------------------------------+ | /| | / | | n / | | hla / e | | Lac / c | | Mc / a | | ah / l | | Sar / o | | / S | | / | |/ | +-------------------------------+ The CD itself is the normal one except that there's also the 'Promo only...' line on it. It's really the same because the shop where I bought the promo (for actually less money than the standard version) verified it for their database. It is contained in a soft paper sleeve that together with the booklet is stuffed into the above envelope. (It can't fall out, the envelope is right closed. That lead to the fact that I obtained an empty jewel case for the usage of the CD.) But the nicest thing in the package is the booklet: Sized equally bigger than normal like the whole package it has the normal CD cover on front. It consists of twenty-one sheets of paper, bound together with a golden rubber band that is actually removable to separate the sheets. The sheets themselves are of two different kinds of paper. After the front sheet with the album cover there's a pair of sheets for every song (except Wear Your Love Like Heaven), one of grease-proof paper with the hand-written lyrics on it, one normal one with a picture on it. The pictures form a superset of those in the regular editi on booklet. The last picture sheet has the album credits on the back. With perhaps the exception of my Love & Anger promo that came with a 70 cm x 70 cm sized thick cardboard TSW-album-photo that is the nicest promo version of anything that I have, especially if you consider price/value. Seeing 'ectopech' in the same line that of course translates to 'ectounluck' or something one-wordish like that, it just fits better, even if 'glug' or 'gluck' reminds of fuzzy blue beeeeer... Has anyone else seen Jean-Michel Jarre's LaserHarp? It can be seen at least in the Concert in Lyon video. It consists of several laser beams shooting into the air, made visible by clouds of dry ice. Jarre holds his white gloved hands into those laser beams and wants to look like he is using this as kind of a keyboard, but I don't think the notes that come out of some synth have anything to do with his hands at that moment... Just another wierd harp... Well, I think I have a similar background, and I was completely surprised. Maybe it has to do with one's willingness to suspend disbelief? I went to the film not knowing what to expect after "the mission goes awry", and I just believed everything in the way in which it was presented. I had the most fun that way. Still, even if I had known "the secret", I think the film is entertaining (and thought provoking) enough without the surprise. So why all the insistence on "keeping the secret"? Because those who will figure it out on their own, do so because they want to. Others like to be fooled. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 8 Feb 93 10:12:34 -0500 From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu (Barry Wong) Subject: Lucky Jessica! I mailed of my check January 30 and got Equipoise on February 5. All I can say is WOW! So far, I think i've listened to this puppy eight, maybe nine times and it just keeps getting more and more addicting. One thing is for sure, Happy's style is growing (maturing) as she masters the tools available. Runners definitely sounds like a single to me, so does I Say. Cohabitants is scary (I love it). While Equipoise isn't like any of the earlier albums, I don't think there is anything wrong with that, can you say that KaTe's Sensual World is just like The Kick Inside? Thought not; nobody can stay in a single style, they have to grow, and ooh boy. is this growth! Vivkie mentioned insert(s), what I got was a little business card sized b/w with a picture of Happy on one side and all six album covers on the other; kinda looked likes a mini promo poster. Also got a pretty gold autograph :) On to other business, when I sent my $$$ I included a little note asking about sheet music, I got a really nice handwritten note from Kevin saying nothing was available yet, but that a Song/Picture book might be out in 1994- depending on how well Equipoise does. !!!! Took bart into Berkeley and walked to UC campus, with the Telegraph ave coffee dive tour after the show. There was a good bit of irony evident in many of the pieces displayed. Some other stuff was less radical or provocative such as a chess set and some silver plates from a private collection. A couple of items were just plain goofy, such as an impish creature whose body was several stacked flattened spheres crowned by a cone, with a silly face above. There was also a large photograph showing the artist with a collection of dolls--probably 40-50 or so. They had a video running showing the artist lawn bowling, voiceover by the artist describing some of his work. I kept wondering what a "mundane" would think of him after listening to that tape :). Oh, Max Ernst is one of a group including Salvator Dali, Man Ray, Andre Breton and others of the "Surrealist Manifesto." The UC Berkeley campus museum has a book "Anxious Visions" that documents their previous surrealist show and decribes the political and world scene of the era. The surrealist ideas are powerful, important and still quite relevant. Happy's music also has tremendous power, such as "Wrong Century," those feelings of displacement that are so disturbing (to me anyways). > Vickie Thanks for sharing, Vickie.
