(SPOILERS) *************SPOILERS************** I said these things: > I'm not good at this, describing music. I *love* it, and I don't know > what else to say. It's still too new for me to be able to write > coherently about. Just because I've listened to it at least 10 > times doesn't mean that I can talk about it. I'm still getting > used to it. I'm used to it now, but I still can't talk coherently about it because I'd sound like a blabbering fool (ohmygoodnessthisisGREAT!) I can't review it at this time because I'd be a gushing, slobbering puff of air (it'saWONDERFULalbumandi'mtotallyOVERJOYED!!) Until my soul quits soaring and I can be ob...ob...(pfft)...ob...JECTIVE, I'd better not attempt a review. (i'msoECSTATICit'saEUPHORIA!!!) > Anyway, with "lifetime" music I have to > listen over and over and over again, mostly without even paying > attention to what I'm hearing, in order to get the music deeply > and firmly imbedded into my being/psyche/soul/mind. I don't even > really pay attention to the lyrics until I'm intimately familiar > with the music. Then, once I know the lyrics, I can concentrate > on the minute details. It's a process that I only go through > for a few artists, but it's an important process for me. And a process that's never failed for me, it is. This album keeps getting better and Better and BETTER! I'm already to the point where it's pretty familiar and I want to learn the lyrics. I was right in that this one *IS* a "lifetime" album for me. I'll listen to this album when I'm 90 (goddess willing) and love it as much as I do now. It's an electricity, this album... > Will it become my favorite Happy album? No, I don't see that happening. Disregard this. I *do* see it happening. > That's not a negative reflection on this album though. Ecto is and > always will be my favorite, and yes, partly for sentimental reasons. With Genesis, _Foxtrot_ is my favorite album for sentimental reasons (it's the first album I got by them) and _The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway_ is my favorite for the music and story. A precedent has been established...:-) Yes Neile, you're absolutely right! Ecto was my first. > Is it up to the standards of quality of the other albums? Absolutely! Oh yes, oh yes inDEED! > Is it *Happy*? Oh yes, you bet! (As in, has she changed her style > dramatically? No.) Progressed, expanded, and opened up though. > Will other Happy fans love it too? A presumtious YES! Presumptious, since Angelos didn't like it at first. As he discovered though, multiple listens are a *MUST* to fully feel the magic. > Which albums is it "closest" to? Warpaint...absolutely. See above (Progressed, expanded and opened up) > No guitar solos :-( (Makes me realize that I haven't heard any acoustic > guitar. The credits say that she did play guitar, so I just haven't > noticed it. I'll have to listen specifically for the guitar on the > songs listed and having it._ There is guitar on "The Flight" but it's not Happy playing it. She does play guitar on "Temporary and Eternal" but it's not easy to hear. > "Mother Sea" is the most beautiful thing in the universe... yes > Favorite song: one guess :-) It's now very hard to pick favorites. Whatever I'm listening to :-) I love them all now, but special ones are "Save Our Souls" "Temporary and Eternal" and "Play the Game" besides "Mother Sea." Oh, and "I Say." And "He Will Come" and "The Flight." How could I leave out "Runners" and "Closer?" "Out Like A Lamb" is pretty special too. Just so you know...:-) > Least favorite song: "Cohabitants", but I think I'll come to like it a lot. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Remember, I said this. I did. "Cohabitants" is **FANTASTIC**!! The only thing that really threw me was this thing that I won't give away, but I will name, The Voize. I'm used to it now though. > Radio song: Hands down, "Runners". The only problem with this being a radio song is that it's very long. I haven't timed it exactly (no times are listed on the CD) but it's nearly 6 minutes long. If radio stations are willing to play it though, it has the potential to be a massive hit (in the alternative charts anyway.) It's got a hook that just won't quit! It's great! > Kevin's favorite song is "I Say". Understandable. It's amazing!! > Angelos, "Play the Game" is not the Queen song. I love the lyrics to this song. (Well, I love the lyrics to *ALL* the songs.) I have *SO* much to say about the album, but I'll restrain myself for now. I'm walking on air! Vickie ======================================================================== From: rhogan@chaph.usc.edu (Ron Hogan) Subject: Interesting musicians I found Date: Sun, 7 Feb 93 3:55:13 PST Recent perusal of the used bin at Rhino in Santa Monica came up with Connie Champagne's LA STRADA, including lounge-like versions of Iggy Pop's "Shades' and Lou Reed's "All Tomorrow's Parties", as well as standards like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Frenchette." Also Schasle (that's her name on the CD) with a cover that, coming out in 1991, looks like a strong precursor to Loreena McKennit's THE VISIT. The music on this CD is great, too. Then there was a Chameleon sampler with tracks by Ultramarine and Bel Canto...life is good. Ron ======================================================================== Subject: Suzanne Vega single Date: Sun, 07 Feb 93 01:33:22 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Some of you may recall a time a couple of months ago when I was gushing over Suzanne Vega's b-side "Men Will Be Men" which was on the back of the domestic cassingle for "Blood Makes Noise." I _finally_ found the song on CD today. It's on the British single for "99.9F^o" which makes it unfortunately expensive. I know it's not on the domestic "99.9F^o" and I was never able to find a domestic CD single for "Blood Makes Noise". In addition to "Men Will Be Men" the import single contains a couple of live-in-the-studio tracks recorded for the BBC in August '92. The songs are "Rock In Pocket" and "In Liverpool." These are ultra-simplified arrangements, just Suzanne and her 6 string acoustic. All 3 of these b-sides are fantastic and I think this single is a good addition to the collection of SV fans. Jeff (who is somehow making time for occasional forays into other music between the many repetitions of _Equipoise_. He also notes that "He Will Come" was lodged firmly in his head today during those few moments when he wasn't listening to the CD. This song is _gorgeous_.) |Jeffrey C. I had it on repeat for about 5-6 times, and I felt shivers running through me each time. This is (I think) the first time that Happy has used music to evoke emotions as a synergy with the lyrics and the emotion in her voice. This could well be a song of lost love, but to my ears it sounds like a requiem for someone lost ('broken his lease', mention of sneaking out from the doctors) and the whole way this song is set up, with the breaks with the bagpipes, and the solo bagpipes at the end, *to me* make the second senario more probable. And the way Happy sings the line 'He'll call me when he's back in town' is spine-tingling. Also, 'Closer' is *so* powerful. Ack! How could I have hated this at first? I feel really stupid for posting those impressions... There isn't anything excessive here. All effects/layers/textures are there for a purpose, and it takes a while to get the full effect. Oh, Vickie, I think the guitar on 'Temporary and eternal' is Wonderful, and quite audible. And the e-bow on 'Runners' is also quite effective. I second the fact that the first album makes a strong impression. In my case it was Volume I, and I still love it *a lot*. BUT, I have a feeling that Equipoise will rise to be my all time favorite album (just like The dreaming did). Let me also say this: I don't think *anybody* out there makes music like Happy's. She most definitely, and unquestionably is... Angelos (who feels like such a jerk for posting Friday night...) ======================================================================== From: "Jeff Lueck" Subject: EQUIPOISE!!! Date: Sun, 7 Feb 93 18:07:32 CST Although I haven't received my official CD from Aural Gratification yet, I have the privelege of living just a few blocks from Vickie's place where I was successfully able to bribe Ectoma herself with a bag of Chester's popcorn... okay, well, she probably would have been listening to it anyhow, but I got to hear it _AND_ got to make a tape of it until my CD arrives. *** IT'S WONDERFUL ! ! ! *** I've listened to it about 5 or 6 times and am starting to be able to distinguish each of the songs. The song that has hit me the most so far is probably _Play the Game_ (Play Your Game... can't quite remember the exact title at the moment -- guess I'm too euphoric :-) ). This could be because BI get about 85% on side A and then the tape ran out so 100% is on side B, but it's probably because it's such a great song! I don't think I'll ever be able to pick a favorite, though, because they are all wonderful. _Cohabitation_ is, well, interesting. I better not say anything else yet... as Vickie told me, this song will promote a lot of discussion. She's right! And the cover... I'm in heaven. !!! Thanks Vickie! (for everything -- all the posts in gaffa which got me hooked on Happy a coupla years ago, the sneak preview, and the medicinal, uh, ....) ;-) -chip ======================================================================== Subject: Out like a Lamb (Lyrics) Date: Sun, 07 Feb 93 20:13:06 EST From: Angelos Kyrlidis OUT LIKE A LAMB --------------- he'll call me when he's back in town this I know he'll call me when he's coming around this circle again i can feel no shame in his discretion cause i think he's always seen how deeply he'd affect me he came in like a lion on the hunt a vibrant man when he'd had enough, he snuck out like a little lamb and they have said he could have been so much more but fame was not what this old boy had come here for he did arrive very well equipped with gifts of mind and hand and the knowledge that life thrives in every grain of sand he'd paint his dream, he'd paint his sea he'd always make them laugh he would have died a million deaths on my behalf it's a case of perfect hindsight maybe we can try again i did love you more than you knew now we see our history he'll call me when he's back in town surely he'll call me when he's coming 'round the circle again i can feel no shame in his discretion 'cause i think he's always seen how deeply he'd affect me it's a case of perfect hindsight maybe we can try again i did love you more than you knew now we see our history he quietly slipped out of town when the doctor was turned around when they finally found him out it didn't make the news for seventeen hours he moved vern out piece by piece by six a.m. he'd broken his lease he'll call me when he's back in town surely he'll call me when he's guided 'round that circle again i can feel no shame in his discretion 'cause i think he's always seen how deeply he'd affect me he'll call me when he's back in town oh this i know he'll call me when he's guided 'round that circle again i can feel no shame in his discretion 'cause i think he's always seen how deeply he'd affect me By Happy Rhodes (1993) ---------------------- ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: Re: A plea for understanding in a mechanised ethos Date: Mon, 8 Feb 93 12:12:37 EST Martin writes > > I forgot who wrote this (sorry!) ... > > I did buy a single sometime in elementary school, Rock On > > by David Essex, which to this day I think is a pretty cool song. > > This is one of the songs on my first-ever radio tape!
