(So I guess that the subject is false advertising!) I mailed my order for Equipoise today! I can't wait! (I guess I can because if I couldn't I'd go out to Albany to pick it up!) I've been playing my Warpaint cassette like mad, almost every day. It grows on me more and more. I'm excited to get Rhodes I and Rearmament (which I already ordered a week ago.) I'll probably go down to Tower - Boston to get Ecto. Then all I'll need will be Rhodes II, but never fear that's next on my list! Jim: I haven't been able to listen to the Roches' Seductive Reasoning yet because my turntable died! I guess it's upset that I bought a CD player and is on strike! (I also haven't rented Spirit of '76 yet because the night I went it was out! Can you believe it?) I love seeing that someone else had Gary Wright's Dream Weaver. I too had that when I was a youth! :-) I was also big into America, ELO, and Bread! Eeeeek! But I had redeeming features at the time: I also liked Ray Charles. And would shortly discover, in no particular order, in my teen years: Kate, Peter Gabriel, Nina Hagen, Lene Lovitch, Pearl Harbour, Souixsie and the Banshees. So I am forever indebted to her for giving a great show in Athens in the spring of 1980 at the Sporting Basketball arena. Then came Kate and PG. She and I both remain interested in hearing more about Shawn Colvin's appearance later the same night, if any- body stayed awake through it. Kristi's allusion to kd's "Miss Chatelaine" video aroused my curiosity about whether "chatelaine" meant anything beyond the title of a women's magazine in Canada. Turns out the online _Oxford English Dictionary_ has two definitions. One is "a female castellan, or the mistress of a castle." For some reason, this reminded me that there was an episode of _Doctor Who_ some years ago, in which the heavy (who was thought to be one of the good guys until late in the story) was named Castellan. The second definition was of a chainlike article of clothing worn around the waist, from which could be hung numerous utensils endemic to women in general and Ladies of the House in particular. It sounds to me like a feminized version of that redoubtable symbol of stereotypically masculine pursuits, the tool belt. All of which suggests the next silly existential question to befall us: Should kd's next appearance on the small screen be on _Doctor Who_, or on _Home Improvement_? :-) On a tangentially related topic: On the way out of the reel of 1917 Russian silent films at the Art Institute Film Center last Saturday, I picked up a copy of the next month's schedule (which of course is now this month's sched- ule, but that's neither here nor there). Next to the stack of schedules was a stack of issues of a throwaway gay newspaper, on whose front page was a squib to the effect that Melissa Etheridge came out at the gay inaugural ball. Remember, you heard it here last :-). My favorite line from _The Princess Bride_ was somewhat late in the action, when the corpse of one of the characters was brought to the cottage of Miracle Max (Billy Crystal) to be evaluated for possible revival, and Max assured his comrades that he was only mostly dead, and to be mostly dead was to be partly alive. I have felt this to be relevant to a number of situations in my life over the years, none of them directly connected to ecto however. _All Things Considered_ has this minute reported that the Maine legislature has passed a bill legalizing the keeping of lobsters as pets. A marine biolo- gist they interviewed said that even when hers get big, she only eats strange lobsters. Congratulations to Neile on being accepted for publication, and a hearty welcom e to Greg on his return to ecto. Yesterday, _All Things Considered_ reported that the new Red Line subway in Los Angeles runs from downtown to MacArthur Park. As fate would have it, Richard Harris' rendition of "MacArthur Park" was the winner (as it were) of Dave Barry's poll to find the worst song of all time. Let us hope that this does not result in the venerable phenomenon of rapid transit suffering from guilt by association :-). This is a bit delayed, I know, but I wanted to tell you welcome to Ecto! I'm so glad you posted, and I'm glad you liked the albums so much I know what you mean about I & II, they're so simple and pure, yet complex and (to me) profound. Sheer brilliance and beauty. Ya Neile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must really be an alignment of the stars: a new Happy album on the way and an acceptance letter for your second book of poems (after 12 years, much to long a time between books). 2) Secret Hall of Shame and Self-abuse: When I was young (oh, much too young) I used to own three Partridge Family albums, including the Christmas album (barf!). I remember watching the TV show when it was first on and really digging the music...what was I brain dead? I also had two Carpenters albums...real early ones where they did versions of Beatles tunes and Karen was pictured on the cover behind her drum set. Oh yeah I also had several Electric Light Orchestra albums as well. But then one day in the mid-seventies I discovered Eno's album Here Come the Warm Jets, and well I've never been the same after that. 3) Guilty Pleasures of the Heart: I actually own a Captain Beefheart album, Safe as Milk, and occasionaly, when I'm real depressed, I put on a tape of old Steely Dan music.
