My dad has most of his albums and they're reasonably good; they make nice Sunday morning listening. Vollenwieder plays the electric harp (yes, it _is_ weird). I believe the instrument is of his own design (and possibly manufacture) and is the only one extant. It's very pretty, though extremely different from the harp we Loreena fans are used to. Of the albums I've heard, _Down to the Moon_ is the best. If any of y'all are into soothing, slightly jazzy synth-type music, you might want to check it out. I for one, would be intrigued by the appearance of Happy on such an album. I don't know if he's used a vocalist before, but I think all of the stuff I've heard has been instrumental. Wonder how this rumor got started and whether it has any basis in truth. Jeff (who's still anxiously awaiting the "big news" and rather liked whomever it was' suggestion that it might be of a personal nature and has thought of two interesting possibilities--one that she and Kevin are engaged to be married (Vickie, do we know anything about the pair's feelings regarding that device?), and another that she's pregnant (which is completely farfetched by still would be pretty cool though it would put a damper on a possible tour)) ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Feb 93 1:21:40 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Soul-Baring Admissions, Inc. Other guiltys: Elf (Ronnie James Dio's band), Van Halen's 1st 2 albums, Journey's _Infinity_ (I went to see Montrose in concert and had never heard of the 2 opening bands, but the next day I went out and bought their albums. They were Van Halen & Journey.) Let's see...Bad Company (the only concert I ever paid to see and never saw the band. T Rex (I guess they shouldn't be in a guilty pleasures list) and Uriah Heep and Little River Band and (going back farther) Rick Springfield, The Monkees...I could go on & on with that because I used to be a 60s Top 40 weenie. My interest in more "unusual" things started with Genesis in 1973. Thank goodness for that, or else I'd probably be forever tuned to classic rick and oldies stations. I wouldn't know Chris and I wouldn't be here now. My interest in female vocals started in 1981 with Kate. See above. This is a fun thread! Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Feb 93 1:38:43 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: More tidbits from Albany way Hi, here's some of the other tidbits I said I'd pass on... H&K had representatives at MIDEM, which is a big thing in Europe. Kevin wasn't sure what that stand for. Music Independent Distribution Blah Blah is the closest he could come. The people he sent told him that Warpaint was a *huge* hit with many of the distributors, so the possibility of the catalog getting exposure in overseas stores is much more likely. He said that distributors in Germany, the UK, Switzerland and Australia were especially interested. MIDEM had just gotten over, and the representatives hadn't gotten back to the US yet. Kevin will get more information when they do. He had talked to the guys on the phone and didn't have time to get details. A European licencing deal, that would be *great*! Still and all, it might not happen for a few months. There would surely be a lot of details to work out and contracts to be signed. - Dr. Toby Mountian did the digital mastering of Equipoise. Kevin said he *loved* it. Mountain is quite well-known in his field. He's worked for Rycodisc, I know. Does anyone else know more about him? What things he's worked on specifically? (Besides Warpaint, that is.) - Does anyone know what the Hard Report is? I know that it has something to do with Adult Alternative radio, sort of like the Gavin Report. Equipoise will be reviewed in it. - I have an idea that Equipoise will get much more attention than Warpaint did, so we all need to keep our eyes out for reviews or even just mentions. Personally, I'd love to have either an original or a photocopy of anything like that. Even a fax will do (we can receive faxes, we just need prior warning.) Whatever, it's got to appear in Ecto, so be on the lookout. - People in the Phildelphia area have been lucky enough to hear cuts from the album. Kevin said that he sent a copy to Mike Morrison of WXPN and that Mike took it out of its package and went in to the DJ, gave it to him and said "play whatever you want." Have any Ectophiles heard anything yet? - Bob Leonard is working with (on tour with) Emerson Lake and Plamer. It's not certain if he'll be working with H&K, but Kevin seems to think he will be once ELP's tour is over. I think Bob is the tour manager. Kevin would say nothing about a tour for Happy, but I'm sure that they would like to do something, no matter how limited. - I asked Kevin how the 1st5 have sold so far, and though he couldn't give me exact figures, his best guesses will give a good indication. Rhodes I - 750 Rhodes II - 750 Rearmament - 700 Ecto - 1500 (yes, it's in the second printing) Warpaint - 13,000 Most of those, of course, were sold to distributors. The figures are impressive to me, considering that Aural Gratification is run from Happy and Kevin's apartment! Every single one of those CDs, no matter if they were going to individuals or to distributors, were packaged up in that apartment! So, even if you bought a CD in a store like Tower, it was handled by either Happy or Kevin. Most likely Happy, since Kevin is much busier than she is and she's tended to do much of the grunge work. - The only reason I say that Kevin seems busier than Happy is because he's not only been working with Happy on her stuff, but he's been producing Mitch Elrod's album (still not finished) and he's still working steadily on the Sesame Street spots. He said he just finished 11 more pieces. Besides letters and numbers, he worked on a spot that explained the concept of "between" and one that dealt with pattern recognition. He mentioned something about a boy dreaming too, but I can't remember what that was for. He said that the people at Sesame Street send him video cassettes of the spots and he just does the music and sends them back. He also said that they tend to air right away. I've never watched Sesame Street, but I think I'll buy a TV Guide, just to see when it's on. All this time, since I found out that Kevin did much of the music for it, I've been meaning to watch it, but I just keep spacing it off. I know it's a wonderful show, and knowing that Kevin is involved in most of them, I do want to see it. Does Sesame Street air in other countries? Martin, did you say you've seen it before? If so, is it the American version or is it produced in Australia? Someone (I'm sorry, I can't remember who) asked if Kevin's sister worked on Sesame Street too, and I finally remembered to ask him about it. No, the other Bartlett on there isn't related to him. - That's it. Vickie ps, I've just read Jeff's post and I'll add on an answer. I think the big news has to do with her career rather than her personal life. I would be *very* suprised if Happy were to get herself pregnant at this time. Anything's possible, but I doubt it. I don't know how they feel about marriage but it's always seemed to be parallel to the way that Chris and I think. (Partners for life anyway, so what's marriage for?) If they did get married, I doubt they'd make a big deal out of it. My guesses as to the BIG NEWS: 1. Opening for someone on a major tour. 2. This Andreas V. thing. 3. Music being used in a movie. These are *ONLY* guesses! I don't know anything that you folks don't know. (And don't think I didn't try to weasel it out of Kevin either! :-)) ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 31 Jan 93 23:14:23 PST From: stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Re: Happy rumor from a record store WretchAwry writes: > > I still liked the movie, though, but I've enjoyed other Peter > > Greenaway films even more. Style without content. Content without > emotion. Emotion without caring. *Real* purty, though! I can see what you mean, but I'd really recommend _Prospero's Books_ and defend it against those criticisms. For one thing, _Prospero's Books_ is basically a retelling of _The Tempest_. The other Greenaway films that I've seen (_The Draughtsman's Contract_ and _The Cook, The Thief, blah blah blah_) are certainly better at style than characterization -- or maybe very good at characterization if you like ruthless cerebral people :-). But if you liked the scenery of _The Cook, blah blah blah_, you'll probably be blown away by the composition of _Prospero's Books_, and maybe more pleased with the characters and content. _The blah blah blah_ is not exactly the kind of Greenaway film that gives neophytes a great impression of his work. I've heard that Greenaway is very much into the art form of painting, and it shows in his films. Of course, I like early Laurie Anderson, too, which is also rather emotionless and cerebral. I can hardly wait for my _Equipoise_ to arrive. At least until then I can try to get _Little Earthquakes_ out of my system (I finally made myself a tape of it since I can't pry the CD away from my friend and his girlfriend). ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Feb 93 10:16:53 EST From: ejg@eplrx7.es.dupont.com (Ed Grozalis) Subject: EQUIPOISE on radio Hi, I heard something from Equipoise on radio Saturday morn. I assume the CD has been distributed to some radio stations. I heard it on WXPN, U of Penn`s radio station in Philly. Keep listening and request it. I can't believe I had the pre-order letter sitting on my desk for 2 days before I mailed it.... I actually thought of renting a car and driving to Albany for hand-delivery, but then re-considered. :) And now I read that it's being played on the radio in Philly. Ed, do you remember which song you heard? I played my Albany tape over and over this weekend (actually 'Mother Sea', 'He will come' and 'The flight') and pretended that it was a rare live CD single. :) It worked to quench my equi-thirst for a while, but the sound of the crowd talking over 'Mother Sea'-which *does* sound like early KaTe, annoyed me after the third listen. Now that I think about it, I have no idea what she is singing in 'Mother Sea'. Hmm... Maybe I can convince myself that it is *very* important to transcribe the songs before anyone gets Equipoise, so that we can talk about them.... :) BUT, I think that a video like that by Sade for 'No ordinary Love' would be appropriate [Isn't that the one where she appears to be underwater?] I REALLY CAN'T WAIT!!!! Re: Albany shows. If there's any I will most certainly try to go. Re: Andreas Vollenweider. I have always thought of him in the same way as Jean Michel Jarre. It would be good exposure for Happy if the rumour is true, but IMHO it would be to the wrong crowd. I *cannot* see Happy as a New Age crowd darling... That's all for now. I was thinking -- some people might want to wait to read reviews until they've heard it for themselves. What do you all think about putting spoiler alerts in the subject lines when reviewing or discussing the new album? It doesn't matter a lot to me because I can just skim posts and save potential spoilers until I've heard the album, but spoiler warnings might be helpful to some. Just a point to ponder. A friend said he saw _The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover_ on video and it was amazing how much of the film had been lost by the "pan-and-scan" method of cutting large format film down to video aspect ratio. I would DEFINITELY recommend SKIPPING the video and seeing it ONLY at a theatre, at least until they reissue the video in "letterbox" format, to preserve the aspect ratio of the original film. I say this because Peter Greenaway uses the entire frame of the film when he composes each and every scene. By losing the left- and right-most portions of the film, one loses much of the composition. A crying shame. A friend and I went to see _Prospero's Books_ in San Francisco, in what is supposed to be the hip and gay part of town, and we were shocked by how many people DISLIKED the movie. The guy three seats to our left cried out in relief at actually surviving three hours of torture, all the women in the women's loo said they didn't like it, and that was pretty much the concensus of the crowd. Except us, we loved it. It is visually amazing, has great pacing, the books themselves are wonderful, the entire film was just packed with imagery, and the concept of the play brought to life in this way was a tribute to Shakespeare's lasting genius (as well as to Greenaway's current genius). Enough Un-Happy-ness. Happy doing Andreas Wollenweider?
