Relph" Subject: Happy Rhodes Newletter Yow! I received my copy of the Happy Rhodes / Aural Gratification newsletter in the post yesterday. Everything sounds great! Except one. I WANT HAPPY TO PLAY IN SAN FRANCISCO! She would be great at either Slim's (my first choice) or The Great American Music Hall. Anybody else want this to happen? I think I'm going to have to call AG and tell them my opinion. Do you think there's a chance? -- John ======================================================================== From: lubkin@apollo.hp.com (David Lubkin) Date: Tue, 25 Feb 92 10:11:52 EST Subject: Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares will be appearing at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, Saturday, March 7 at 8pm. Tickets are $22, 20, 19, and 17. Tickets at box office or charge-by-phone (609) 683-8000. (I'm not going myself. I think Kate is right (of course): they do sound like a heavenly choir. But I only like choirs as background vocals; I can't see going to a concert of theirs. Your mileage may vary, hence the posting.) -- David. =========================== lubkin@apollo.hp.com =========================== ------- ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 25 Feb 92 17:45:25 CST From: vishal@ra.csc.ti.com (Vishal Markandey) Subject: wardrobe Merow!! writes about the first touch of color in her wardrobe. Considering the number of us going to the Philly concert, how does a pre- concert dinner get-together sound? There are quite a number of good places within walking distance. My suggestions: 1) Eden, at 37th and Chestnut St. Cafeteria-style serving, but they have good made-to-order stirfry, pasta dishes, and many different salads. Desserts are great, and the interior is nice and green and has a bar as well. Dinner is around $7-10 depending on what extras you take in addition to an entree. 2) Le Bus, at 34th and Sansom. Also Cafeteria-style. Sandwiches, salads, soups, and a few entree-type things (lasagna, polenta, etc.). The "special" of an entree, HUGE salad, and a chunk of cornbread (or other bread) runs about $8. Smallish seating area, though, so we might not all fit! 3) 3401 Walnut St. Food court surrounding a largish seating area. Although the food is semi-strictly fast-food, the advantage is "something for everyone" from different stands, including Deli, Tex-Mex, Philly Cheesesteak, burgers, everything yogurt, and a few others. 4) Saladally. 40th & Locust St. Although a 20 minute walk from the Univ. Museum, this is one of my favorites. Huge, good unlimited Salad Bar, inter esting soups (my fav: African Peanut Chicken), and burgers/lasagna/grilled chicken type of entrees. Easily under-$10. (whoops, misspelled the name. It's "Saladalley". I figure a good time to start is 5 or 5:30PM, to give eating time, walking time, and standing-in-line-to-get-good-seats time. Any concensus? There are scores of other restarants, but these are the ones that I like the most, are relatively cheap, and have vegetarian entrees or salads for those who require it. -=$>DaveTorok<$=- torok@nynexst.com p.s. I know the area since I went to school at Penn, so if anyone needs driving or Mass Transit information/directions, etc. let me know! ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 25 Feb 92 19:25:48 EST From: ken@startek.com (Ken Descoteaux) Subject: Re: Stuff Kryldis writes: > A typo, or is it Happy's way to discourage fans from going? :-) Nahh. And, I'd like to say, I think David had some very good suggestions for restaurants. I've been to them all, and they're all good. I personally prefer Eden, and think that the 3401 Cafe (also called the Food Court, and many other things..) is not so good in terms of how good the food is. On another Happy note: I took my copy of _Warpaint_ down to one of the local music shops and left it with the manager (a friend). Now if I can coerce a certain someone into getting his copy to the University radio station we might get something happening here. ;) ] Every now and then we islanders get a perk. Sarah McLaughlin is coming to The Rock!! Rumour has it that Melissa Etheridge will be back this summer. Now if we could just get Jane Siberry to come back (she often vacations here and on her last trip she was talked into a concert) then I might stop pouting about not going to the Happy concert. Date: Wed, 26 Feb 92 12:33:22 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Had my first Happy dream last night. It was, shall we say, surreal, largely because the context for the dream was attending a Happy concert, but that wasn't the entire focus of the dream. What that focus might have been, thoughIdon't have the slightest idea. Hmmm. I wonder if this was inspired by a cross between the impending Happy concert (one month to go!) and seeing the Grammies last night. Who knows? In any event, Happy's performance was kind of weird. There were no songs from Warpaint played, and I didn't recognize a couple of the songs, though I think they may have been B/R songs. And I missed both of the encores because I was out getting a cup of coffee (which I don't ordinarily drink). Yes, it was surreal. One of the encores, though, was "Given In." Dunno what the other was. There were lots of ecto people there, but I didn't actually get to meet any of them. I did, however, at one point walk up to the stage and just kind of stare at Happy for a while until security came over and made me leave, despite the fact that she didn't seem to mind. Gack. I don't want to wait another month for Philly! Jeff |Jeffrey C. Wow. She has a nice, almost beautiful, and quite powerful voice, though I don't find it as distinctive as KaTe's or Karen Peris' or Sarah McLachlan or Jane Siberry, or any of a number of other folks. On the other hand, her music and lyrics make up for any lack of distinction in her voice. Good stuff. When I carried the CD to the counter in the record store today, the woman at the register commented that it was a great album, to which I replied that I'd heard that--I'd been waiting for it for a couple of months. She then wanted to know if I was a Kate Bush fan...weird how these things work out, eh? Jeff |Jeffrey C.
